Malwarebytes never wanted to run on startup before???

The new version of Malwarebytes has something in it that wants to run at startup. Somebody know why?

Right now my Security Task Manager is notifying me of this and I am preventing it from running.

Why would Malwarebytes of all people throw unnecessary startup stuff at me? I know, I know, I should maybe be talking to Malwarebytes not you, but I trust you! :wave

Security Task Manager message is displaying this:
    Program: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    File C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe/install/silent
    Registry key: SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

I'm thinking this has to do with their new 14-day free trial on the PRO version, which I don't want and already answered that I didn't want while installing.

If you downloaded MBAM Pro it has put in live protection.
It is easy to stop, just run CCleaner and on the startup page go to "tools" then "startup" and you will see MBAM there you will be able to delete it or just stop it running at startup.

If you don't have CCleaner you can download it here at MGs and it's free.

The use of the run once registry key indicates that after the first reboot, MBAM needs to do some cleanup or tweaking that it couldn't do during the initial install (the old version still had a driver loaded?), it's not like it will run on subsequent boots and remain resident. Allow it to run the first time on reboot, then start MBAM and check the settings.

Thanks BILLMCC66. I downloaded the new free version, and it includes a new option to accept a 14-day trial version of the Pro. Since I'm already running Norton Internet Security I don't want MBAM to run on its own, so I said "no thanks". After that I got the warning from my Security Task Manager about MBAM still wanting to run something on startup, but finally I told STM "cancel" and it stopped trying to warn me.

Thanks dr.moriarty. Now that you mention that, I do recall a warning somewhere here on MG not to use CCleaner to control startups. Luckily I hadn't touched anything yet.

Thanks satrow. That's a really useful explanation. I don't know if MBAM is ever going to get to run what it wanted to run on startup now, but I'll keep an eye out for any issues. If worse comes to worst I'll uninstall and reinstall the MBAM and allow it to execute its RunOnce next time.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. :wave :wave :wave

    @ dr.moriarty
I have just read the article by Chaz and have to admit that is the first time i have seen it.
I would not dispute the facts and am always ready to learn, i have used CCleaner to control startup items for a number of years now and have not suffered any of the symptoms mentioned (maybe just luck) but i will now do it the correct way.
    Thanks for the heads up.

JanetE, did you let MBAM run once? I believe when you download and install, it wants to check that the definitions are up to date.
Note this in your path CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Yes, I think that ran, plodr. Or else I ran it manually, I'm not sure, because updating the definitions is such a knee-jerk habit with me that if it didn't happen by itself I would have automatically done it myself. I rechecked for updates again just now and everything seems normal. Thank you! :)

My choice is Startup Control Panel Standalone Version

Cool, mjnc, always open to new (MG-approved) gadgets. :major But what about Vista? And what do you mean by "This version simply runs without any installer."? You mean once I press the download button my system will suddenly have a new executable without further ado?

This version of Startup Control Panel does NOT need to be installed through Add or Remove Programs,
and it does Not add a new link in Control Panel.

The download file is in ZIP format, so the actual Executable file, Startup.exe, has to Extracted from the .zip file.

You can save this anywhere you like. For example, in a special download folder named MyDwnlds\Utility.
Once the Executable has been extracted from the .Zip file, you simply double click the filename to run the program.

You could create a shortcut on your Desktop, as I have.
For example, using the above named location, you would create a new shortcut with the following in the Target field:
    C:\MyDwnlds\Utility\startup.exe

Then you can run it immediately from the desktop icon.

It does not add anything to the system Registry.
It never needs to be Uninstalled.
If you ever wanted to remove it, just delete the .zip file, the startup.exe file and the desktop shortcut.

    Very simple to manage. ;)
