    HP Compaq t5720 AMD NX1500/512/256US
    Running Windows XP Embedded1985-2001 version

I bought a a used tower and when I got it home discovered that I needed a password to get in.

I called the lady back and her son could not remember the password,
They had also deleted the Guest account when cleaning the computer out.
I have a fully functional version of Windows XP Home Edition I could use to
    reinstall windows but
The laptop has no cd drive and only uses the flash drive
I was able to get my copy of windows xp on the flash drive but I am unable to get the tower to read the flash drive and load windows automatically.
    I tried F10 F 8 and F12 and they all require a password.
Any ideas I love the lil desktop and hate to just throw it out.

Thank you so much for your time

    Carolyn

    Hi Carolyn,
Can you boot into the admin account in safemode ?? If so then go to user accounts and delete the password for the account thats locked.
If not you can create a bootable flash drive with this password carcker...

    http://www.pendrivelinux.com/creating-a-bootable-usb-ophcrack/

follow the instructions as of how to create the usb boot drive, boot it as you would like with an OS disc and let it run, it will list all the windows passwords.

you can also create an XP OS bootable usb drive by using this free utility...

    http://wintoflash.com/download/en/

    hope this helps.

Edit: As you have already placed the OS onto the flash drive you need to change the boot order in the bios (f12) so that it boots from USB first. If this is not viable you will need to create a disc copy of the OS, ask a nieghbour/friend who has a cd/dvd writer drive if you could use their machine to create the disc, if the bios is password protected then the only way to clear this is by a destructive install.

    Hi Carolyn,
Just to mention that it must be the same Edition of XP for that machine or the COA will not work.
Also there may be another way around the passwords in the bios/safemode... if you are confident enough to go inside the casing of the tower... make sure you have grounded yourself (wear a rubber wristband and touch something metal, like a tap or radiator or even the metal casing of the tower) to dissapate any static you may be holding. make sure the tower is not connected to the mains power supply(disconnect the kettle lead) and press and hold the start button on the machine for at least 30 seconds, take the side casing off that will expose the motherboard and other hardware(usually the rightside panal) this is only held in by 2 screws, slide it back and lift upwards, once inside look for a coin sized battery on the motherboard....i have attached an image of what you need to look for...remove this battery for at least a coulple of hours take note of how the battery is in place usually the writing is on the top, replace it and power up your machine once you have the casing back together.

So this is the BIOS that has the password and is blocking your attempt to change the boot order?

If so, none of the previous methods will help, with the possible exception of the last.

    Hi,
I will never give up until I am able to use it :wave
I got a hold of HP and they helped to a point. I registered the comp to me with HP
They gave me a link to down load. I will add a copy below.
Anyway I did everything they said but when I put the usb in it says
I have it now saying the system does not have license for the image OS
I am wondering what I am doing wrong.. also when I deploy it to the flash the file looks like it is an empty file.. wondering if I need to download something to make this file whole

    Thank you

    Hi Carolyn,

Looks like you're making some progress :)

I know nothing about thin clients with XP Embedded; what happens if you try to start it in Safe Mode now, as you would with 'normal' XP, by tapping F8 as Windows is about to boot? If you can get in this way, you'd be in the 'hidden' Administrator account and be able to change the User passwords, etc.

  11. cmitchell

    cmitchell Private E-2

That does not work either.. the woman I bought it from deleted the guest account and the admim account she passworded but forgot the password.
I just downloaded winzip and tried opening the hp files that way and tried Opcrack both don't work..
I am one determined woman I will crack this one way or another lol...:)

    TY..

    Hi Carolyne,
I have just been looking at the link that Hp sent and noticed that there is a newer Revision released, try slipping that onto a USB drive and try booting the machine with version. I am very surprised that Orphcrack didn't collect the password for you. If you can get the usb to boot and do a repair windows install there is another fix of how to delete/change Admin Passwords here.....

    http://www.ehow.com/how_4464321_remove-administrator-password-windows-xp.html

Keep on going you are nearly there ;).

    :(
I tried the newer version and it keeps saying I don't have a license for the OS

  14. cmitchell

    cmitchell Private E-2

The system does not have license for the image OS!
That is the exact answer everytime I try and put the operating system back in.
So I think the operating system is OK. Its something with the machine I need to figure out
    Hmmmmm.... :)

    Hi, carolyn,
have you tried opening the task manager at the password log-in screen (Ctrl+Alt+Del) if you can in applications click new task in the next box type cmd.exe this will bring up the command prompt screen in that screen type control userpasswords2 and hit enter when it finishes running type exit . reboot and see if the passwords have been removed.

We have some HP thin clients at work. Though, we have moved off to Wyse P20s. Using Vmware view 4.6.

Now if memory serves me correctly, upon boot, when windows loads, hold down the left shift key, until the login prompt appears.

    The default password is typically:

Administrator (that first A is a capital A).

These thin client typically will boot from any usb thumb drive as 1st boot device, odd that you couldn't get yours to work. Since that download link, if followed correctly, and using a formated thumb drive (typically 1 gig should work) should have wiped that drive and installed fresh.

Tried booting the flash drive via vmware workstation, sadly it was smart enough to know I was not running an HP box. Oh well. When the USB drive is inserted, and with the usb (or removable) is set for 1st device, do you get something similar to the attached pic?

    Hi Carolyn,
I thought Ophcrack would work, it has never let me down before, it should of displayed the the passphrase whilst it ran, if not then it would probably wiped it. You could also try "userpasswords2" > start> run> type> control userpasswords2 .....

    take a look here...... http://wiki.ljackson.us/Control_Userpasswords2

    hope this helps.

Maybe I am reading the boot log wrong
I did find a registered protocol family 1 and
    slim login manage slim

other than that I did not see anything I thought might be the passworrd.
Is there anything or anyplace in the boot log I should belooking I may be overlooking the obvious

The passwords have been saved in > /tmp/ophcrack.tmp search for this file and open to show its contents.
If you can't find it run ophcrack again ...

then at the end of the cracking, press Enter once. Then press "n" and Enter.
    You'll get a command prompt.

    Code: Select all
    cat /tmp/ophcrack.txt

this will display the contents of the this file.

but if i was you i would go down the route of the userpasswords2 as it is a lot easier.

I should of gave you this link before ...... http://www.andihope.com/hope-for-free-software/hack-windows-xp-password-with-ophcrack/ ... take a read of it as it gives an in depth walk through of how to use ophcrack.

I just want to get in change the password, and bring the computer back to factory.... so I can finally make it mine.
Can I get into the control panel using ophcrack to add a new user, make it an admin and get rid of the other admins

    Thank you

    Hi Carolyn,
Are you in windows as a user?? if ophcrack got you in then you will be in as an admin user, just follow these instructions .....

1.Start > select run > in the run box type in "control userpasswords2" (without the "hyphons").
2.The User Accounts box will pop up, in there you need to uncheck the checkbox that says "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.":
3.Click the Advanced tab and uncheck "Require users to press Ctrl + Alt + Delete":
    4.Click OK

When the dialogue box pops up, type in your username and password (if you do not have a password, leave it blank)

I am not in windows it never loaded like normal windows.
If I could find the password where ophcrack let me in then I would reload windows and get in and change it that way.
Or is there a way to add an account in the oph windwo... I am on oph running on slitz

if there is another to open with plain windows please tell me how and I will

    Thank you

    Hi Carolyn,

If you are having difficulty using Ophcrack then i suggest that you use this utility instead......

    http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/

here is also a good run through on how to use it....

    http://www.bnetweb.org/how-to/change-a-windows-nt-password/

when it asks you to type in the user name type Administrator then press 1 and this will delete the password that is protectng the admin account, from there you will be able to delete any other accounts passwords.

I got to understand the ophcrack and got the password picture
THARJ was one Administrator was another one and the Guest account was there but has been deleted from the machine so the windows log in screen says
All 3 show empty for the passwords
when I do a page where it shows only test it says the passwords are here tmp/ophcrack.txt I am still trying to figure out how to locate that file
Also the box only opeens for a few seconds gets to 10 % and closes is that Normal

    Thank you

I actually feel like I can have this computer to work with someday soon :)

    Hi Carolyn,
Can you now boot into windows?? or into safemode with that passsword?? if so just follow the instructions for the userpasswords2 fix, as this will remove all of the passwords and let you boot into any of the user accounts tat are set up on that machine.
But if not the NTPassword will work on a locked machine, it runs similar to ophcrack but instead of showing the passwords it removes them.

Way to go Girl!!! ;) it does pay off to stick at it :-D:-D. Now that you are "IN" I think that it would be a better option if you just did a System Recovery, where the machine will roll itself back to its Factory settings....

1.) Press the power button to start the HP. Press and hold the F11 key to launch the HP Recovery Manager from the recovery partition.
2.) Follow the HP Recovery Manager instructions to save any important files before continuing with the recovery process.
3.) Obtain and install updates for the HP. After your system reboots, use HP update manager as well as Windows update to restore all critical updates to your HP computer.
4.) Make a set of recovery disks. Use HP Recovery Manager and select "Advanced Options" to create a set of recovery disks that can be used in the event that your HP cannot access the hard drive.

Ok Carolyn I have found another way to activate the Recovery Partition...

How to activate if F11 does not help to start recovery.
If U can access to START > Control Panel > Administrative tools or shorter way:
START > run > compmgmt.msc and press enter
    then Disk management
    Find which is recovery partition
    Make Mark partition as Active
    Then restart pc.

to mark partition as active ..... Right-click the "Drive D/Recovery Partition" and click "Mark Partition as Active".
Reboot, and press F11 as it starts up

I hope this works for you.

EDIT>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> IT IS F10 YOU NEED TO PRESS NOT F11 (MY APPOLOGIES F11 IS FOR LAPTOP RECOVERY F10 IS FOR TOWERS!!!!)

    Hi Carolyn,
I have been reading up on the "System does not have the license for the software image" error and it seems that you need to update the Bios to fix it, I am unsure of which version that is needed so I would advise that you contact HP support again and explain your predicament, hopefully they will be able to shed a bit more light on it for you.
Anyway here is the link to your drivers for that machine......

This is the reply from HP..
Now I am wondering should I just give up.. I really don't want to put any $ into it.
My gut tells me they are wrong and it is not the hardware because I was online before and all it needed was a new OS put back in.

Do you think I should just take it in to be serviced

    Thank you

[COLOR="Navy"This email is with reference to the case number 11789038

Further to your reply, I see that the link sent by me was not the right one for
this operting system and got an error that said error the system does not have
    licenese for the image OS.

Carolyn, the OS image link which I have provided is the correct one and I
suspect issue to be with hardware(thinclinet) needs to serviced at any one of
the HP authorised local service center on chargeble basis as the unit is out of
warranty / replaced with new one. However, in order to avail core level support
on application/OS software related issues I suggest contacting our Phone
support on: 1 8668524865 Press Opt 1 for thin clients and our dedicated Thin
client engineers support team would be forward looking to assists.

I apologize for the inconvenience caused.

Please e-mail us, if you need any further assistance and we will be glad to
    assist you.

Once again thank you for contacting HP e-Solutions.

Had a thought I am going to try this tonight.
I am going to install a windows xp embedded usb version on the computer and get that all working and then try and use the HP download after I get everything installed to have all the HP drivers on the computer.
I will post later if this works in case it helps someone else

    Thank you :major

Just keep plodding away ;), I have an answer back from the Guru he has said that he will have a good read through what has been posted already and see if he can give a bit input, though he is not familiar with Embedded Systems but he is very knowledgeble ;), I have great faith in him and often read up on his posts.

I am off to bed now as it is very late and I have had a very busy day (Daughters B/day Party>> 11).

Goodnight and I will look in later on today.

    Hi,

I have a couple of thoughts one is that the USB install you downloaded list 512mb of RAM as a minimum for install and you only have 256mb. This could be causing some trouble.

Your HD seems to be only showing about 10gb and it should be showing 80gb. I'm not sure what is going on there.

Can I ask how did you attempt install when you got the error? Did you boot from the USB flash stick and then you got a black screen with writing about Compaq and giving you the error about 'System does not have license for the image OS'?

I would say try this download that is more in line with your RAM and flash memory.

You may still get the error but we can rule out memory requirements.

One other thought is when you said you figured out how to redirect to C: in an earlier post what did that mean? What was the error that made you think you had to redirect to C:? (I'm thinking that the image restoration should be automatic.)
