Does anyone have any clue what type of site this is?

All of the sudden, all of AOL articles are Huffington Post 'news' articles. I was always under the assumption that it was more of a rumor/magazine type site. Now I'm seeing people actually link them as fact.

Is this a legit news agency?.....I mean, as legit as you can be when it comes to media as I'm really not looking for a debate on news organization bias.

It's a clean site even though I don't personally like Ariana Huffington but that's a moot point. AOL must have done a deal with them for some money. I don't like AOL either. Go figure eh?-D

Didn't they used to be more of a 'People' or 'magazine'-type organization?

I have AOL for my homepage because it's my first email I ever had, so I kept it for all my online stuff where I need to give email. They have the best spam control out of all the email services I use. Thinking I'll be changing my homepage again as I have to say, I don't care for the Huffington post news feeds. They just don't strike me as legit and some of them read more like blogs (or maybe they are blogs).

Yup on blogs and bullcrap stories, they used to be more real news orientated. I don't go there anymore. It sucks as bad as Fox does IMO.;)

I can't stand the way the media has been going in the last 5-10 years or so. They are all scrambling to get the reads and hits online since that's where most people get their news now days so they are, as a result, appealing to the lowest common denominator who loves to read about the affairs of celebrities/politicians rather than the important things going on in the world. In the scramble to be the first, they aren't fact checking like they should either.

Anymore, anything that is found online is likely to be quoted as fact. :(

I hate the way its been going too,its much better over here with the BBC news being a practically nationally owned and hence not clambering for ratings.

I really dislike the way news companies are tryna create news by secretly recording people and setting up massive sting operations to railroad and entrap people.Even celebrities and politicians should be allowed to talk freely behind closed doors, I think if every single thing someone said during the day were recorded there would always be something they could be harpooned with,no one's a saint.

So what if such and such a body made or even text a slightly racist or sexist joke, practically everyone I know does every day.

Don't know much about the Huffington Post other than a lot of the stranger stories I've seen on the web have been from there, seems pretty legit to me but I highly doubt their sources are scrutinised heavily...

Much like our CBC over here though they would love to have more advertising. I love the BBC World News, very refreshing indeed, actual world news for a change, go figure eh?!-D BTW, CNN sucks too now. Cheers to the BBC!:wine

@Rikky...yep, I feel that more and more, the media is creating news and stories rather than reporting it. I hate their mantra of 'the right to know'. NO, you don't have a right to know everything about someone's life just because they are a public figure.

I've always liked BBC, as well. I just changed my home page to BBC World, MGs, and AOL mail (which doesn't come through my outlook). I love tabs. LOL

The majority of people who write for them are unpaid independent bloggers, and they're very liberal-biased. Not that I don't enjoy reading them every now and then, but I would no more quote them to back up something as fact than I would TMZ.

Ah well, at least the Fox folks are paid, right?;) I believe it was TMZ that broke the OJ fiasco, am I right? Seems most are doing that now these days.:(

LOL Augie, it's not that I'm more in favour of Fox...I'm actually incredibly liberal. But I don't think bloggers necessarily have facts no matter what their political leaning. :-D

Oh! This is a bit off topic, but speaking of trying to create news....I saw that all of Sarah Palin's emails while governor of Alaska were released to the media! WTH? I'm not a fan of hers, or even have that much respect for her, but omg, is that setting the wrong precedent...at least in my opinion.

I totally agree,it would be great to be a fly on wall during big meetings of heads of state and listen to how politicians talk behind closed doors but we all know many of us won't like what they say.

I guess its one thing is they are saying one thing and doing another politically but I'll bet most of the things people end up raving about will be from a moral standpoint and jokes she's made about issues that are important to people.

If I were a politician and someone found some of my posts on here they would think I were two faced and deceitful. For example laughing joking about the raid on Osama's compound, even though I was only joking about the Navy Seals, chain of command and news reports about the matter I still thought it was the right thing to do,I think the navy seals did and amazing job as did the administration for organising it but the only thing that would make the headlines would be the jokes.

Palin's on the news now, they are actually amazed that she swears rolleyes In private emails rolleyes Can't believe that made the news...

Hello!! My wife is as liberal as you can get and Huffington Post is her bible. She knows what's in the 6:00 o'clock news before they come on:-D. I try to tell her some thing and she tells me "I already heard that" It is as liberal as you can get, but right wing bloggers come on the site and get some real good discussions going. I don't have to listen to the news; my wife keeps me lined out:-Drolleyes

Hello Rikky. I have regained the opportunity to tell you that I got carried away about all this. I now know you are quite the comedian. I want to say I'm sorry for being so serious. Being a veteran I got carried away. Please except my apologies. I now see you respect and honor the Navy Seals and that's good enough for me my friend.

Out of interest Fred what do you think of Fox? Do you agree that its a terrible news outlet with a far right agenda? Not tryna start an argument just wondering:)

I haven't seen enough Huffington articles to judge whether they are far left.

The whole idea that a news outlet can have an agenda one way or the other makes a mockery of freedom of the press IMO,news reporting should be totally neutral.

Honestly Rikky, I don't watch TV. So, I can't say what Fox News is. I do read some online content from them. Some seems good, some bad, like most media outlets, you have to read into them some.

I fully agree the press should be neutral. Do you think the MSN type press is neutral?

But, is the freedom of speech not what the 2A is about? If it is not slander or libel, is it not free game?

So we start with HuffPo and digress toward Sarah

I am not sure how to respond to either since HBT was closed.

I will state IMO (not humble) Sarah Palin has No Chance of election in 2012.
I have found that the Huffington Post has an agenda that is directly in line with the current adminstration goals.

Not everything was released. Certain things were held back.

I didn't catch the whole story, but this goes back to when she first became the republican VP candidate.
A request was made at that time for certain info. and it was agreed that it would be provided.

One thing I did catch from that story is that it has been 1,000 days since that transpired which is longer than Palin actually served as governor.

That is EXACTLY it Rikky. At work we watch CTV News while we're eating lunch. It's actually kind of boring, but you get an unbiased story, and only facts. That's what I want from the news.

  25. Sgt. Tibbs

    Sgt. Tibbs Ultra Geek

The trouble is, our definition of a "news source" has expanded to include anyone with a website. It's hard to decide who has the facts when half the people talking about something know less about it than the average person on the street.

Huffington Post is liberal. Fox News is conservative. MSN is pretty neutral, yet leaning more toward liberal. Anyone who claims they have unbiased reporting is lying. It should be, but it is run by humans, and so it is not.

How come no one (it seems) ever mentions The NewsHour on PBS?

My favorite section is on Friday when they do the Weekly Political Wrap discussion with Shields and Brooks.

  27. Fred_G

    Fred_G Heat packin' geek

Again, I don't watch TV. But isn't part of PBS's income from the government? I would think that might generate a bit of bias.

As far as the mainstream press goes, the stories they ignore seem to show a liberal bias. Just my opinion. ;)

I can see Palin's emails from my back porch... :-D

  28. Rikky

Rikky Wile E. Coyote - One of a kind

All the poor trees that will be wasted printing all that crap out:-D

I guess it comes down to what's important to the reporters in question,as has been said by Tibbs the more I think about it the less it seems impractical to have a totally unbiased news outlet, the whole process of choosing what story is important involves every reporters beliefs as to what's important to them, what provokes an emotional response in them.

I dunno, maybe I've been thinking about this the wrong way.:confused

  29. Fred_G

    Fred_G Heat packin' geek

True Rikky, the reporters will decide what they want to report. But again, the stories not reported on show bias in my opinion. Not trying to get political, or too off topic, but these come to mind.

Maxine Waters threatening to 'socialize' the oil industry.

A democratic presidental candidate claiming there were 60 states in the US.

Then Speaker of the House Pelosi claiming they had to pass a bill to see what is in it...

Now, these are examples in the last few years. Just in my opinion, if Palin or even Bush a few years ago had said there were 60 states in the US, It would have been all over the news. Probably a skit on SNL, and on Letterman or the Tonight Show.

Like the SNL skit where Tina Fey parodied Palin saying she could see Russia from her backyard. (Which was well done and very funny) Many people thought Palin said that. Where Palin actually said you could see Russia from Alaska.

And of course, as a Conservative, perhaps I am biased against the libs. ;) I would like to see the good AND bad from BOTH the Liberals and Conservatives and anyone running for or holding political office. That way, perhaps the average citizen would be better informed when they vote.

Sorry for the thread hijack. :-D

Well, this took off since I left last night for the Phillies game. :-D

I guess if they know that their email can be accessed as 'public documents', it's fair warning. I just really don't agree with giving the press (who has proven that they like to make a story out of any trashy/sensationalist thing they can) access. Why is that necessary?...unless of course there is a legit investigation.

Yeah, but I read it and don't get anything other than the feeling of 'not legit'. That's my issue with it.

Yep. Most things said in private (by everyone) are not fit for public viewing. Politicians are people. People are not required to like everyone and they are certainly allowed to swear....just like the rest of us. The idea that we hold them to these standards that we (the general we) don't follow is ludicrous. It's why we can't get good people in those offices. The media is the problem as far as that goes if you ask me. Giving them private emails just lends to that problem.

I didn't see that they didn't give everything. I thought I read that it was everything while she was governor. I have a feeling they couldn't give classified stuff, but anything is too much.

Honestly, everyone should know there is bias in any news story. I read it with that assumption. I would also like to have the assumption that facts were checked as diligently as possible. I also don't want to read a blog. I go to my editorial page for that stuff. I take blogs as opinions...at best, and mostly stay away from them. I have way too many people in my own life with lots of their own opinions to read online blogs.

Since this post is a little late in the game I'll just simply concur with the consensus that HP is essentially the liberal version of Drudge.

But I have had their news feed in my Google Reader, as well as Koz and some other sites to balance my feeds of Wizbang and other conservative feeds. My opinion is --- If it's being talked about, if a story must be spun, it just might be true...

hahaha! Zactly! Which is why it amazes me why; Number 1: people want to read blogs if they are looking for facts and, Number 2: why they actually believe them to be fact.

Before anyone jumps on me about blogs, I'm not talking about hobby or special interest type subjects. I'm specifically talking about political/'news' blogs.

Totally normal, all people in high office get death threats.

    Obama gets 30 a day,surprisingly Bush received less than 10 a day

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...reats-a-day-stretching-US-Secret-Service.html

Obama actually received less than Bush until a new mystery writer began personally sending over 25 a day signing each letter with a strange acronym the secret service can't make sense of - F.R.E.D. G:-D

Well, if it's biased, then how would that work.
The show has been on the air for over 35 years.
Would they show bias toward the party of the current president, or the party of the majority in the senate,
or the party of the majority in the house of representatives.
And, they might have to abruptly Change their bias based on the results of the most recent election.

The reason I mentioned that particular segment on Friday nights is that it represents what proper constructive
discussion between liberal and conservative views Should be.
There is no mud slinging, no ridiculous accusations, no foolish posturing.
It's a thoughtful discussion which is actually Informative.

Actually, of all the Tripe Magazines People is the only one that types fact checked celebrity crap. If it's not in people, it's probably not true. But It's all still pointless crap only bored housewives read. However, i believe the Huffington post began as a Political News and Opinion paper, not so much as satire. They've since branched into news reporting, entertainment, etc.

As for their accuracy and integrity, i don't know if there is a site that measures that.. there should be. I don't read them.. all news has a slant in one direction or another, even if it pretends not to.
