    Dear Administrator,

I got hit with a trojan virus that displays fake windows diagnostic screen shot on the computer. I had no idea what it was and even in safe mode I couldn't have access to my C drive. I first managed to download Mozilla then MalwareBytes again and ran it. It only took a few minutes to finish the search because most of my C drive was hidden by this virus. I wasn't even able to open any sites on the google search results because I was being re-directed to different sites so after clicking back and forth I came across with bleepingcomputer site that had some information how to remove it. I downloaded iexplore.exe and ran it after that I ran MalwareBytes again and finally I downloaded and ran unhide.exe program. Just as I thought I had recovered my laptop started playing commercial audio and again I wasn't able to open any search results in google. I downloaded and ran ComboFix,SuperAntiSpyware and finally MGTools. It seems like everything is back to normal but I would like you to take a look at all the logs attached as ZIP file and please let me know if I need to do more to clean it all up.

    Best regards,

    Mike.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!
Actually, this was only one of your infections. You had several and still have some items to fix. However, before I can continue, I need a proper and complete MGlogs.zip. Please run MGtools again and attach the C:\MGlogs.zip file. Make sure that it finishes running. Do not attach any other log that this file. And please do not make your own ZIP files ( like you appear to have done with the last one and you missed logs) and do not double embed zips within zips. Please attach the logs as we request them. Thank you.

Also I strongly recommend that you remove all the downloads you are saving in the c:\program files folder and store them somewhere else in properly named folders for each one. The Program Files folder should not be used for saving downloads. It should only contain folders from programs that you installed not the installers/downloads themselves. Files save like this are subject to much suspicion and deletion by scanning tools. Also a year or so from now, you may not remember what some of these even are and running them to find out could be dangerous since malware will also save things here. Some examples of what I see that you should move elsewhere are below:

You don't have any protection installed. But I do see left overs from Kaspersky that did not get uninstalled. What have you been using for protection?

Also an observation: Your harddisk space is starting to get low and you will begin to experience slow downs. You should free up some disk space by deleting unnecessary files or back them up to CD.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up because you recieve the following error: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi Chaslang,

I followed all of your instructions. As far as the performance of my laptop goes it seems OK now, my only concern was that there might still have been hidden trojans, rootkits, etc, in my system and I hope that I got rid of them. I am attaching the two new log files and if everything is OK I would like to proceed to the final step that is Toggle SystemRestore. Please let me know. Based on your previous comments I moved all the .exe files in Program Files folder to each of their individual locations but how about the Folders in Program Files such as Adobe or Skype or Microsoft Office etc. what should I do with them. I appreciate if you can comment.

    Best Regards.

You did not answer my question about what you are/were using for protection. There are still leftovers from Kaspersky that I'm seeing and if you don't use it anymore, they need to be removed.

I will tell you when to do this once we finish. We have a couple more items from an infection to remove but I want to know about Kaspersky so I can put it all in one fix.

The folders are fine. This is where they are supposed to be when you install the programs. ;) It is the files that you are downloading ( like the installers ) that really should not be here.

    Chaslang,

I downloaded Kaspersky here a while ago and I was doing a full scan once a month then I saw AVG so I started using it but it made my laptop run extremely slow so I stopped. Right now I am not using any thing and I know I need an anti-virus program so whatever you suggest I'll be happy to follow.

    Thanks.

    Mike.

Okay then we should cleanup the left overs from Kaspersky.

Now let's add some protection. Download and install the below:

    AntiVir Personal Edition

PC Tools Firewall Plus <-- make sure you uncheck the options to install Google Toolbar and Threatfire free edition. There's is no sense in installing excess baggage.

Note your C drive is getting too low on free hard disk space and this will affect performance. You need to delete unnecesary files ( back them up to CD if you need things and then delete ) or you need to get a new large hard disk. You could also do with a memory upgrade to 2 GB if possible. This is an older slow PC.

    Chaslang,

I have done it all and am attaching the two logs for you. Would you also comment on these files that somehow ended up on my desktop and I don't know what to do with them. One is a file called "settings.dat" and the other one is "Windows XP Restore" shortcut.

    Thanks,

    Mike.

settings.dat is just from RootRepeal. The
Windows XP Restore.lnk file is a leftover from your infection and you can delete it now. Your logs are fine other than that.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
