wireless on dell laptop with Fedora

    Need help with Dell laptop running Red Hat Fedora
    It will not run the wireless for a netgear router. It keeps saying wireless is turned off. Tried running software with wine and no luck. Thanks for any help

    Depending on the wireless chip, you may have to use ndiswrapper. That means installing the windows driver to get it to work.

    I can't help with that because I have not been able to get wireless to work on an old HP laptop. I finally gave up and simply bought a netbook that had wireless working out of the box.

    In order for anyone to help, you need to supply the model of Dell so others can find out what wifi chip it uses.

    I have a Dell C840 and it has a broadcom internal chip with an atheros chipset in the slide in PCMMIA card. The Atheros is plug and play. You will have to blacklist the broadcom and reinstall drivers. This is common in Ubuntu as Broadcom did not release OS drivers.

    Updated to Red Hat Fedora 15 and still no luck with wireless

    Fedora 15 needs some massaging for Broadcom wireless to run.

    Hi changed over to lucid 3.0 with a YLMF OS and bingo I now have been able to turn on the wireless,
