I fell in love with a beautiful dog that I met in April of this year. I suspected she was being abused.:cry I was going to bring her to Florida when Chris and I got moved into a house.

Savannah on my son's lap in April:

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v173/star17abby/MG/Savannah.jpg

And here she is again in May watching Robins that were nesting in a bush beside my son's porch before I flew back to Florida. The person that was caring for Savannah was kind enough to bring her out so I could see her again before I left. :)

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v173/star17abby/MG/SavannahMay6-2011.jpg

Last Friday I found out Savannah's living situation was beyond critical. I won't go into all the details except to say punching, kicking, encouraging other dogs to attack and not allowing the dog being attacked to defend themselves is beyond reprehensible.

I was able to get the people that had her agree to let me arrange for transportation here ASAP. I've been treading on thin ice...kissing butt and whatever it takes to not alinate these people by not letting my anger show or mention the abuse.

Last night Savannah made it to her first safe, loving, clean foster home. She's had a bath....she was beyond filthy and has a bad rash all over her belly and the inside of her legs that is very itchy. Her injuries....many, many scabbed over, others needing care are numerous. She has a lenghty laceration on her underside, one above her eye and I guess we'll see what the vet says tomorrow. She goes to get checked out and get her Interstate Vetrinary Health Certificate so she can be transported to Florida by the rescue group OperationRoger where I managed to already get her listed for transport. WooHoo!

This pic show Savannah "smiling" at her new foster home. She has been playing ball with her new canine friends.

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v173/star17abby/MG/SavannahSmiling.jpg

And here's Savannah this morning...pooped out after playing with Frank and Squeaks. She looks pretty settled after the ordeal she's been through. Keeping my fingers crossed we can get her transported here quickly.:)

I really did lose 10.6 lbs this week. Wanted to lose some of the weight I gained being hoizontal with health issues but I certainly didn't want to lose it b/c I was sick and heartbroken over Savannah......

I suggest watching/reading 'The Dog Whisperer' just in case she gets weird. Exercise, discipline and affection in that order.;) Walking the dog should help with the weight.:)

Cute dog Teresa and well I have to say Chris you are looking more like you're the one going to live in the doghouse my friend ;)

Some evil folk around that abuse not just animals like dogs but humans, so its a great think that you have given this dog "savannah" a great new home.

Welcome back to the forum new friend. I hope you are well. I like your dog. I'm a dog lover. People that abuse animals should be in prison, like the quarter back that had dog fights. Can't remember his name. I don't like him and I never will. They should have never let in back in foot ball. He is scum!!:boxing

Teresa now that she's safe and a Vet has documented her injuries, are charges going to be levied against the previous owners? Because they're just going to keep doing this to other animals... I'd me interested to know how that turns out.

She's so pretty! I hope she wasn't too severely traumatized and can be happy in her new life with you :)

Hello!! I don't mean to be a nerd. I concerned about the dog, but I'm still waiting to hear how Teresa lost 10.6 lbs. and are you going to be ok after being horizontal with health issues. I'm glad the dog is ok, but now I want to know about Teresa. The dog seems to be doing very well. How are you doing my friend????:confused:confused

Teresa had surgery last fall for a cholesteatoma, which with her thyroid condition kept her energy level pretty much flat-lined. She spent the better part of the last week stressed out about the dog and didn't eat much, and with her thyroid being spastic to start with the weight loss was no surprise. She's fine, nothing to worry about. I keep trying to tell her there's no room in this midget condo for another living thing, but hey, after nine years she's not about to start listening to me now. :)

Thank you for your post. I didn't mean to pry. Sorry. I'm the new guy on the block. There is a reason I was concerned, but I can't discus it here. I hope I haven't caused you any problems. My friends are very special to me and I wear my feelings on my sleeve. I have a hard time communicating on this forum. I try my best to make a good hand, but some how things just seem to come out wrong. I have a fairly good knowledge of Xp3, but I'm afraid to post and offer help because when I do, I get shot down. I have a very reliable source that thinks Teresa is the best thing sense buttons on a shirt. I think that also. I have only know her for a very short time. Hang in there my friend. I have had mine for 50 years. Some times she listens, but rarely:-D. I'm very sorry and hope I haven't gone some where that I shouldn't. I will not pursue this any further. I feel better now. Thank you sir!!

With out family and friends, this life ain't worth very much. I'm blessed with both and I cherish every day because I never know when one will leave this corrupted piece of crap called life. A little heavy for some, but most will understand. Sorry that I'm off topic. I'm known for that:-D:-D

Thank you all for your supportive, encouraging replies! It means a great deal to me. *sniff, sniff*

Chris and I had gone looking at houses again yesterday morning (which plumb wore me out! LOL) and while in the process of that, my phone started ringing & signaling for texts re: Savannah, and it didn't stop until later last night.

As the cats out of the bag so to speak, I can be a little more forthcoming with details. To make a long story short, Savannah was originally my son's dog, but he had to move and wasn't able to take her with him (no pets allowed). He was completely unaware she was being abused even though I suspected it when I first met her. I can't go into all the details as to why I didn't push the issue with my son other than the fact I know he would have ended up in prison for murder, we'll just leave it at this; Any of you that are parents I know would have made the same decision.

Due to a change in work schedules and no sleep, Savannah's foster daddy was exhausted so my son was taking to her to the vet. :eek instead of Aaron. Foster mommy & daddy are my niece & her boyfriend...my niece fosters rescues through Pitty Love Rescue (how cool is that!?)

    Savannah's condition:

    - The cut above her eye along with the lenghty laceration on her underside are healing well.

    - The scabbed over dog bites that cover the back of her neck, back and other areas need to be treated with neosporin to ensure they don't become infected.

    - My niece had given Savannah two baths (Thursday & Friday night) to not only get her clean, but trying to get her some relief from itching due to the severe rash on her belly & legs. The rash is improving and it is felt by the vet that it was caused by her being so dirty. This is also to be treated with neosporin as Savannah has made it bleed from chewing and scratching.

    - She has healing bruises on her underside (belly/ribs) from being kicked. The vet made it quite clear to my son "This dog has been abused!"

    - She has ear mites (mild case). Medicine obtained.

    - She still greatly favors her right rear leg which I noted immediately as something "new" on my second visit with her. There is no break, thank God! but something is going on in there so I will work more with the vet here to see if we can resolve that for her.

    - All necessary "official documentation" needed for transport to Florida and then some, was given to my son who then gave it all to my niece. The vet also reduced the charge to my debit card.:cool

    - My niece and her boyfriend have a lot of friends so there are people constantly coming and going in their home and everything has been fine. Yesterday while out with Savannah, she had an extremely strong reaction to one man....barking, pulling on her leash etc. and it took some effort to calm her. They felt she felt threatened re: reminded of one of her abusers as she is such a friendly, loving, affectionate dog otherwise and isn't bothered by other 'strangers'.

So, AFTER the vet appointment all hell broke loose and my son is on the war-path. I totally agree with his feelings and what he wants to do....I want to do the same but it's not the way to handle things despite the brief satisfaction it would give to pound the living crap out of those that hurt Savannah.

I plan to follow up further (legally) on this and my niece, along with the vet will do their part as to statements/documentation about Savannah's condition. However, it is imperative to first get Savannah out of the area first. Right now she is only about 15 miles from where she was and they know the location.

Savannah is getting more and more relaxed so that she isn't showing immediate fear when for example my niece goes to pet her. Previously, Savannah would immediately drop to the floor as if anticipating a "hit".:cry

Now the goal is to get her here ASAP. Just like a child getting moved from place to place getting confused/stressed, the same happens with dogs. Savannah needs to get to her "furever" home to begin her new life and really begin her full road to recovery.

Just finished reading this thread and all of it breaks my heart :( Taking out frustrations and anger on animals is about the most cowardly thing a human can do.

  26. AbbySue

I agree 100%!! It's no different in my eyes than abusing a child. These poor animals love us unconditionally and we just need to love them back and take care of them just as we would a child. To do this, or allow something like this to happen in our own homes is unforgivable! No excuse for it. How anyone can live in a household and claim to not see the signs of this is incomprehensible.

I'm still sick over this but so very relieved that Savannah is out of there!

It looks like she is recovering extremely well from her abuse! That's great since a lot of abused animals can become fear aggressive.

I can imagine your relief that she is in your niece's home.

    Just really awesome, Teresa. :)

Good to see that Savannah is on the mend. :) Having Frank there as her companion for now surely will help her even more. The pics are beautiful!

I agree with everything you say AbbySue. Inflicting pain or neglecting a pet should be punished severely.

I even don't understand people who get a dog and leave it all day home by themselves and consider that also as a form of abuse. Here in our condo we have quite a few of them and some of them are crying and/or barking most of the day. :( They need company because they're pack animals. IMO, if you can't take care of a dog during the day time then don't get one! Cats are a different story because they're solitary animals.

I dealt with the same type of issues when I had my Abby where certain 'men' were concerned. But just as with Abby after I adopted her, lots of love, kindness and reassurance will I have no doubt resolve that. With Abby for example, I could tell by her body language she was feeling uncomfortable but I was able to quickly make her comfortable. Consistency and a responsible, loving yet in control pet owner are key IMHO.

Unlike others mentioned in oma's post (which I totally agree with btw) I'm home all the time so Savannah will have my undivided attention. I've also been refreshing myself for the past two weeks on handling adopted dogs, abused dogs and reviewing my dog training materials.

Despite Chris's comments about country musicrolleyesLOL....he handed me a catalog a couple hours ago to order an orthopedic memory foam sleep system for Savannah. Isn't he awesome?:cool:major

I absolutely agree, it is no different than abusing a child. Both are pretty much defenseless and dependent on their human carers. I literally lost enough sleep when my cat was sick for a few days recently :(. Deliberate and repeated blatant abuse of animals is one of the few things that just makes my blood boil. Whoever is responsible needs to go to jail, not just a fine, i.m.o.
On a brighter note - lovely pictures of Savannah and her friends. Great that she also has some canine pals to play with. She looks as though she is settling in well.

Go easy on those Jimmie Rodgers songs though, otherwise you may wake up to a yodeling doggy. LOL

We had a great dane that was abused by someone. He got rescued by my wife and was staying at the vet's where she worked at the time. This dog was so cowered by men that she would ball herself up as small as she could if any man came near her. I had to get into the cage with her every day for a few weeks until she was no longer afraid of me. She turned out to be one of the best protectors of my wife's safety. They can be turned around, with love and constant reinforcement. From the looks of the pic's, Savanah is well on the way to becoming a great dog.

Many dogs do it. It is a posture of submission. ;) Wait, are you talking the first pic or the second? The second is a posture of submission when playing. The first is pretty typical with some breeds. Legs straight out like they are crawling.

My Abby was like that. She was beyond believable in protecting me. She always 'sensed' what I was feeling and would take it from there but was easily reined in if needed.

Note: Abby was a German Shepherd - Husky mix

My kids used to brag to their friends about how protective she was of her mommy all the time and try to give demonstrations. :eek One such incident, although done playfully could have resulted in permanent damage. Abby knew it was "play" but she was up for the "game". She grabbed the guy I was seeing by the "junk", proceeded to growl, shake her head back and forth, then started tugging and pulling him down the hallway...you get the picture? He's on his backside....dog's got his "junk", he's trying to match the pace she's pulling him so as not to have anything "permanently" removed from his body...he's yelling...call of your dog! CALL OFF YOUR DOG! I'm laughing so hard I'm crying so I CAN'T call off my dog...my son's laughing so hard he's about to wet his pants....OMG....wish I had captured THAT one on video!!! roflmao

She was a great dog and I'll always miss her...:(:)

I've seen a lot of dogs do that but they don't usually stay that way. Even Abby did from time to time. My son tells me Savannah has lain that way since he got her @ 3 weeks old.

I never really gave it much thought because I've seen it before. I'm going to ask the vet about it whenever she gets here and I take her in. My curiosity is peaked now.

An FYI for the rest of you. Savannah is a Lab - Vizsla mix:cool

Dogs have such varied and interesting personalities!! Encourage the good behavior and discourage the bad and as long as they feel safe, you will have a very unconditional loving partner. We have had so many dogs over the years, each one so unique. I can't imagine living without their love. ;)

I had not heard of a Vizsla before. A bit of Google, and sounds like a great dog for me, smart, short haired... Then I saw the price... $900 for a puppy! Ah well, Fred found me, the next one will too. I have time. ;)

Interesting breed. Loyal, smart, and protective. A lot like Fred. (just a whole lot less hair...)
