Debit Card Compromised. My Bank Rocks.

My debit account was compromised. I am pretty sure it was at a local fast food place. Only used my card there because I did not know I was out of cash when I ordered. Somebody tried to charge $20.01 to a t-shirt company. My bank canceled my debit card.

I noticed the charge, was watching my account, charge went away.

I had to go to my bank, provide ID, fill out a form (they know me by name there) and I will get a new debit card in the mail.

It was a little trouble when I was declined when buying groceries, but my bank acted fast and accurately. Good stuff, especially making me come in person with ID to get a new card sent.

It cost me a little time, but I did not get scammed...

    The scammers got nothing. :major

Will anyone take action against them?

That would at this point be up to the bank. I have zero proof of who got my info. But, I have never let my card leave my hands except at the fast food place, they claimed the register where I was was missing the 'key' and disappeared with my card for a couple of mins. No proof, so I won't mention the name of the chain. I told the bank what happened, and they made a note of it.

They had a list of charges I had made, so they know what fast food place it was. They had multiple debit card cancellations due to a comprimise, so it could be on their end. Impressed me that I lost zero $.

Good peeps at my bank. They never ask me to come up to the floor where they keep the wine and such... But that is OK. :-D

Wine? With it only being a debit card I'm surprised you got to talk to a human:-D

    Anyway,rushes off to check statements....

Speaking of statements I've gone over mine a couple of times and seen things I don't recognise like withdrawals from cash machines in A-end of nowhere I've thought "Damn I'm being robbed!" Then remembered "Oh yeah I was there.":cool

Seems like it turned out, wonder if contacting the police would help get us some justice? Never happened to me so I don't know the procedure but I can certainly imagine the frustration.

Sounds like they made a clone of your card, that takes some decent equipment and is pretty serious fraud if they did.

I don't think they 'cloned it'. I suspect they copied the CC number, expiration date, and the 3 digit code on the back. Easy to do if you have the card for 2 mins. I suspect the billing vs the delivery address kicked it out, but don't know.

I love my bank, I deliver the wine and such for the super customer rooms, but I get people I can talk to. Good peeps. I do qualify for free popcorn sometimes. :-D

Good stuff your bank Fred! :)

Years ago I got a phone call from my bank on my birthday to tell me that they had cancelled my credit card. I didn't trust the call and called their tel # I had in my phone list. Yes it was true. The reason was that someone had obtained my cc# and that there were fraudulent charges on it. (Only thing I could think of was that when going out to a fancy Italian restaurant short time before that incident I had handed my card over to the waiter to prepare the bill). I asked how much was charged fraudulently but the bank refused to tell me. Never saw the bill and didn't have to fill out any papers. I know that credit card companies have automatic computer generated checks on all accounts and flag any unusual purchase behaviors and they knew that these purchases were not mine. ;)

A couple of years ago, some fool stole my purse with my phone, debit & credit cards in it. Well, I borrowed a friends phone to call and cancel the card and the bank had told me my account was already on hold. When I asked why, I was told that the fool went to a store, tried to purchase something but put the pin in incorrectly 3 times and when you do that the card locks up. Why would you try to guess someones pin number??? Also, the idiot used my phone to call his house... that is how they caught him :-D

If your card is outfitted with one of those swipe chips, those can actually be read by a scanning device while they're inside your pocket.

About 4 years ago we had a break-in during the night and we heard nothing only when i got up in the early morning was it discovered, they stole my CCs but no pins were available so it would be difficult to use them, i called the hotline that we have here where you register all your credit or debit cards and they were stopped instantly, i never saw any transactions but the pain in the :kissmy was they also stole my ID card (they are compulsory here) and my drivers license so i had to wait for replacement but other than that no pain.

Wonder who worries more a broke guy or someone who's loaded?

It beats me why the 3 digit code is printed on the back of the card. It is only used when making a 'Card Not Present' (CNP) transaction over the phone or web, so why not send it to the card owner in a separate envelope like they do with PIN numbers.
I am thinking of using a black permanent marker pen to obliterate the CNP number and just keep a copy by the computer for web use.
Having just lost my wallet on an Air France flight from Montreal to Paris, I have had to cancel two credit and one debit card. AF found my wallet and it is the process of being returned to my UK address, but I will ask my bank about blacking out the CNP number as, to my knowledge, it is not required when I am using my card in a retailers outlet.

I have had more than one retailer look at the CNP and use it to complete a sale. The only reason I noticed is because one of the numbers is worn almost off and I always have to tell them what it is.

I had a similar thing happen with my debit card, where between when I was physically in my bank making a deposit and when I was physically in a gas station less than 1/4 mile away someone used my card in California to withdraw the entire deposit to within a nickel. My bank gave me the money back since it was obvious I didn't travel 2000 miles twice in the space of five minutes, but I had to wait a few days for the paperwork to process. Took almost a week to get a new debit card, too. Sounds like you've got a winner, Fred!
