I took my laptop in to the warranty center because there was beeping (not coming from the speakers). They called back and said that it was accidental damage (had been dropped, I beg to differ, but that's besides the point). The said the bezel had been damaged and that was causing damage to the hard drive and the hard drive was damaging the operating system. Could this be a valid diagnosis? Isn't the bezel around my screen? How does taht damage the hard drive?

    Hi

The "bezel" can refer to any casing, and in desktops it commonly is a term used to refer to the outside of the actual computer case. It's possible the laptop was dropped, or something hit it somehow. I'm not going to argue with you, but I've repaired many laptops that have obviously been physically damaged when the customer claims nothing happened to them (it's pretty easy to tell). Regardless of whether you damaged the computer or not, it's obviously having trouble.

Hard drives have disks inside that spin at 5400 or 7200 RPM (revolutions per minute). Laptop hard drives, especially, are sensitive to sudden movement, such as drops or sudden contact with something, and there isn't much, if any, padding to absorb the shock. If the bezel is damaged, obviously the computer received some sort of physical shock, which could definitely have affected the hard drive. Since the operating system (Windows) is stored ON the hard drive, then yes if the hard drive is damaged, the operating system and everything on the hard drive could be irrecoverable.

However, we could try to confirm the problem. What's your laptop's exact make and model number, and how many beeps in what form happen? (Example: 2 short beeps, one long beep.) The beeps are error codes.

If it is, in fact, just the hard drive that is at fault, that's something you could likely replace yourself for well under $100 (not including the cost of recovery disks, if you don't have them).

Does this mean your laptop isn't booting at all? If that is the case you can verify a hard drive issue by unplugging the hard drive, and re starting the laptop. If it successfully boots past your bios and says OS not found or something similar your hard drive is the culprit but if it still doesn't boot it is something else.

I myself have had issues with the dv6, including constant overheating and battery problems. The overheating resulting in my cpu failing.

You are correct the bezel is typically known as the part of the monitor case that surrounds the edge of your screen. For a PC case, it is typically the front panel.

I don't see where a "bezel" would affect a hard drive. That does seem a bit odd. By definition, a bezel is used to hold in place a device with a beveled edge. Perhaps he meant something to do with the HD mount, I don't know.

I certainly believe you when you say you did not drop or abuse your system. But can you be certain your kids (or one of their friends) or someone else was not a bit too rough with it?

Assuming you took it to warranty repair center because it was still under warranty, I am not sure you have many options. You can try an independent repair shop for a second opinion, but if the diagnosis is the same, nothing is gained.
