Hi!! I just spent all day getting this to work. I'm plum tired out. Every sense I have been learning new things on forums, I have heard that I needed a wireless router to be protected better. Well now I have a wireless router. I spent all day on the phone with Rosewill getting it to work. Now some one post on this tread and please and tell me how much safer I am; or that I just wasted my 45$.
Thank you for any comments; bad or good:-D:-D!!

Hi! Wireless Router seems to be working fine. I have a question. When I try to secure my router; my speed goes from 150Mbps down to 50Mbps. Is this normal. Unsecured 150Mbps Secured 50Mbps??????:cry:cry

Hello geeks!! I'm not bumping this up to get attention. I'm trying to learn new things, so if you can help me learn, I would appreciate your reply's. This wireless is a new ball game for me.

Security can affect speed, but shouldn't affect it that much, not really sure in what direction to point ya for trouble shooting tho.

Ok. Thanks !! I have their 800 # I might give them a call. They helped me set the wireless up. Really nice people in California. I'm wondering if I really need security. Not really sure what that's all about. I know it has some thing to do with encryption. I don't do any business on the PC and I live in rural area. I don't think there is any danger of anyone using my internet connection. I'll have to research this some more , as I'm not getting any reply's here on the forum.;)
Thank you for your reply Colemanguy!! :major

Hi!! I don't play for real money. I'm to tight with my dollars:-D You don't think wireless is the way to go??? Every one tells me it will stop the malicious IP's that scan my PC for open ports; which Malwarebytes is now blocking for me.:(

    Hey oneeyejack,

Just as long as you have a router (wired or wireless) with NAT capabilities, it will decrease the ability of someone hacking into your network/computer(s).

Here's a nice site https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 that will check if any ports are seen or accessible by others on the Internet.

    Hi

The only ports that would create a security vulnerability are OPEN ports. As both of the results you posted have 0 open ports, you're good to go.

As to the connection speed (150Mbps or 50Mbps), won't matter, since your INTERNET speed is way below either of them. Security should be used if you think anyone within 100 meters could connect to your internet. If you're in the boonies, and the nearest neighbor is a mile away, there's likely no need for security (though I'd use it anyway... but I'm the paranoid type).

Any router has a built-in hardware firewall, which is different than a software firewall, and provides an extra layer of protection when using the internet, which I believe is the reason you got the router in the first place. Whether it's wireless or wired doesn't matter, but wireless is definitely less mess and work.

Hello my friend!! Many thanks! You have answered all my questions. I have now secured my router with a WPA password. I really appreciate you mcsmc
Do those letters stand for any thing. Just curious. I now feel secure. I admire you young people and all your computer knowledge. I didn't grow up in the computer age, but I try to learn new things every day. I have learned a lot to day. Thank you!! The only problem is I probably forgot a lot of things.:-D:-D I do wonder why I got different results between the wired and wireless test with GRC. I use Online Armor for firewall. Isn't it still being used to protect me plus the added firewall in the wireless router??

Hi Thank you my friend mcsmc. I have been goggling and found this. This makes me feel better about all this. I'm still not sure about all this, but I'm learning. Thanks for your reply's!!
Stealthed ports are like closed ports, but no error message is sent back by the OS. I'm trying real hard to become a geek!!

From a security perspective, closed and stealthed ports are almost identical - neither will permit unauthorised access. However a stealthed port will not report your presence which makes it harder for an attacker to probe your computer (the first stage of such a probe is typically a "port scan" - sending packets to a wide range of port numbers in an attempt to find out which are open). Also, since many attackers scan for a specific port number over a wide address range (looking for a trojan application that uses that port number), having stealthed ports helps the Internet community by making such scans far slower (if a response is sent by everyone, an attacker could scan thousands of addresses per second - if none are sent, the attacker would have to wait longer to check for a delayed reply, reducing their scanning speed to tens of addresses per second or less).
