This is really starting to annoy me. At least once a week I will either read, see or hear about how horribly bad McDonalds food is.

Big Macs have more calories than home made burgers... well no sheet sherlock.
Big Macs have so much preservetives they look the same after 3 months as when new..... I dissagree, a Big Mac 3 days after purchase looks pretty ragged (my own testing).
McDonalds fries are very high in calories.... yes true but people crave "English Fish n Chips" which are traditionally cooked in beef dripping, if they are not then they are not "English Chips".

The list goes on and on and on and quite frankly it's really starting to piss me off.

I like McDonalds, always have, I am fully aware that it is far from healthy, but you know why I like McD's?.... because Burger King sucks donkey nuts in taste and Wendys.... lol Wendys is so much better for you, you know what, every time I've been to Wendys I've needed a napkin to catch the free flowing river of grease pouring out of the wrapper, last time I went I had brand new jeans on and after going through the drive thru I wanted to check my order was right... so I opened the bag and lifted out my Wendy Burger to see what was under it, I suddenly noticed my leg was hot... it dribbled hot fatty grease onto my new jeans without even being open!
    But McD's is worse???

Bottom line is IMO, they are all bad for you, of course they are, thats why they taste so good.... but people complaining about how many calories and grms of fat etc... if you don't like the numbers then DON'T EAT IT!!!
Jesus it's pretty simple really, my g/f is alergic to onions so guess what?.... she doesn't eat them.

And lastly.... the media constantly informing us of how many bad things are in McD's food... those who didn't know and are upset by these numbers maybe should go back to school and learn to read....because you know what people....

    IT'S PRINTED ON THE BOX!!!!

    Rant ends.

    Nooo!

You forgot to mention the worldwide environmental effects of buying from Capitalist chains like these :-D

Do you know what happens when you try reading the box when you're driving at night ... ?

So, you're experienced in the taste of donkey nuts eh?:p:-D I can't stand McD's, especially their cardboard fries:puke but I agree with you, if people like it then so be it even if it may kill them though as a society we all eat too much red meat anyways. I personally like Harvey's burgers and get my thick cut twice fried fries elsewhere.:yum Same difference calorie wise eh?;) The thing that I like that was legislated out was the trans-fat grease, no need for that artificial crap, worse than beef tallow. As Julia Child always said "Everything in moderation".:)

  4. Nedlamar

    Nedlamar MajorGeek

lol Yes my experience of donkey nut tasting is well known :-D
I like Harveys too but I here on the radio the advert says the guy orders a "Paul Burger" being that you can have your burger any way you want it, but when I asked for a Ned Burger they just looked at me funny... :-D

No in all seriousness I know all the bad things, what gets me is they are constantly having a pop at McD's when there are many other chains just as bad if not worse. It's just McD's is the biggest, the funny thing is ... is the reason they are the biggest because they are the best? Which contradicts the hassle the press give them, it almost seems like jealousy.
A bit like WalMart always gets grief, well maybe WalMart is the biggest because they are the best business minds, people seem to think these companies are there to provide a service... wake up call people!... they are a business there for 1 reason only... to make money, if we didn't create a business to make money then there would be no businesess because they would not be able to stay in business.

Same as casinos and lotterys, you really think they are there to make people rich? of course they're not, they are there to make money.

@Satrow... lol This is true but you know you could read it before you start driving ;)

Ya, the press loves to bring down the big boys(no pun intended). Some state even wants to ban Ronald McDonald to stop luring in kids which is the crux of the problem these days. Obese kids, some are even getting type 2 diabetes as young as six and the parents are to blame, instead of parenting they become enablers. Kids these days have a lower life expectancy than us older folks who get diseases like type2, high blood pressure etc. at a later age. You think the health care system is groaning now, wait until they grow a bit older. It's an epidemic by all scientific measurements.

MA lost a whole bunch of weight just by stopping fast food and sodas without even trying. 'nuff said.

That kills me. Because I have literally never met a child who wants to go to McDonald's because of Ronald. They all want to go because of the fries. Very rarely because they get a toy, but almost always because of french fries. I'm not even sure they know there is a clown involved. LOL

My problem with people trying to regulate fast food of any kind is that the food most people choose to buy to eat at home is actually a bunch worse. Preservatives, fat, carbohydrates, chemicals, artificial flavours, artificial colours...good lord. If people actually purchased meat and vegetables instead of frozen pizzas and meals in a box the obesity problem would take a huge downturn.

  8. headmeetwall

    headmeetwall Private E-2

They aren't just talking about banning Ronald (my daughter hates clowns, so who cares?) but also making them stop putting toys in the meals - my kids don't get the toy unless they eat those nuggets and apples anyway.

Yep, one gets apples one gets fries and they share - they both get milk.

Thank you government - stay outta my happy meals - I'll regulate it myself, and if I want a big mac go large - I'll eat a salad later to make up for it...maybe.

and thank you Nedlamar - I never could put my finger on what booger sling, er Burger King, tasted like - you nailed it!

Exactly! People don't take the time to cook properly anymore. I've seen friend's freezers filled with boxed meals. Yuck!

  10. Sgt. Tibbs

    Sgt. Tibbs Ultra Geek

It's especially bothering me right now. A couple of months ago my mother was diagnosed pre-diabetic, primarily because of her eating habits. I try, but I can't cook for her every day, nor can I do every meal. Now I plan all my meals with a scale and calculator using the FDA nutrition information...TONS of fresh vegetables, lots of fish and chicken, and NO pasta, potatoes, rice, bread, etc. Each meal is allowed no more than 20 carbs per serving. It's a PITA, but it's not impossible, either. And it's very extreme. 27 carbs is only 9% of the RDA for a 2,000-calorie diet.

We're actually spending less at the grocery store than we did when she would buy a bunch of Hamburger Helper and mac & cheese for when I'm not available to cook for her. And we're both losing weight. :-D

Sorry to hijack. Sometimes I don't notice the soapbox slip under my feet. :-o

  11. Sgt. Tibbs

    Sgt. Tibbs Ultra Geek

YES!! My niece's kids fairly often will choose apple slices, and they always get milk. And if they don't finish their meals, NO toy. Which is particularly effective when one of them gets the toy and the other two don't. ;)

What we need is to ban is bad parenting, not fast food.

  12. dyamond

    dyamond Imelda Marcos of Majorgeeks

I think everyone who goes to McD's is well aware of how "unhealthy" it is. At least you are trying to combat that with the apples and milk. I did however watch on Jamie Oliver's show last season just how they make those famed chicken nuggets (not just McD's but everywhere) and after seeing that I will NEVER eat another chicken nugget. ever.

Best comment ever. Unfortunately, parents don't want to take the time to buy decent food and cook it, rather sit their kids in front of TV and stuff McD's, pizza, etc in their faces and get them out of their hair. I read an article, don't remember where, but a woman actually admitted that she'd rather take her kids to McD's than cook because it's easier. Gee, well aren't you thoughtful.

If that's the case then I'm guilty too!;) Wow, not even low glycemic whole unprocessed grains either? How about legumes? That is draconian! It's like the Atkins diet but if one does it for too long, ketosis can set in and I guess that's the point, no sugars means no insulin and one burns ketones instead for energy which has its own issues. Her cells are insulin resistant and I hope she gets a clean bill of health soon.:)

  14. Sgt. Tibbs

    Sgt. Tibbs Ultra Geek

Yeah, it's pretty special. LOL If fiber is higher than 5g, then I can subtract it from total carbs for the count (which makes legumes my friend). She can have some whole grain, but she really likes cereal in the morning so that's when she gets those. We're on this for six months, then she gets tested again. If it brought her blood sugar down, then they'll give us some more lenient guidelines. If it didn't, then she'll go on meds...which ironically will also give us more lenient guidelines. :-D

Thanks, dyamond. :) Easy for me to say, though, as I don't have children. Not that having given birth makes someone more likely to know how to feed them. ;)

McD just gets picked on because they are probably the best known. Think of the term McJob... Personally, the only time I would consider eating at McD's is breakfast, or if I am out of town and don't know if 'Joe's Burger Shack' is a good place to eat or not. At least most McDonalds are consistent.

I don't want to get political here, but why do we blame a company for our own bad dietary habits? If you eat fast food 3 times a day for a month, you will probably gain weight. Same thing if you sit at home and eat ice cream for a month... :drool

If you eat fattening food, you will most likely gain weight... Nutrition is not rocket science. Nothing like a little personal responsibility. ;)

  16. Nedlamar

    Nedlamar MajorGeek

My diet is not the best I must admit, I do eat a lot of fruit... like... a LOT lol and a fair amount of veg, I do eat a lot of bread and a decent amount of fast food... lets face it, my diet is not good, but I'm happy :)

You know whats funny though?... I'm losing weight, since working more hours even though that means I eat more "Fast meals" I have dropped from 230lbs to 210lbs in a little over a month. I kind of feel cheated, eating more expensive foods and LOSING weight, although some of that might be going for extended periods with no food, I often work a 10 hour shift on a snikers bar. Yes I know thats unhealthy etc etc, I like to have Mc's once a week, usually on the night before my day off, I have 2 large size Big Mac meals and usually finish my girls nuggets and fries because she'll only eat half if I buy a 10 peice :-D

Now, my diet is bad because of my own lack of discipline, I eat Mc's because I like it, if it didn't exist I wouldn't suddenly start eating super healthy would I.

The funny thing is, the oposite end of the scale is just as bad, Sketchers (the shoe) have released a "Shape Up" shoe for kids, I'm sure many of you know of the shape ups, well now you can get them for kids, the commercial for them shows a young cartoon girl running away from hybrid young boys/junk food characters.

Nice message huh, that didn't get near the attention that new studies show McDonalds is less healthy than eating the same thing at home.

As many of you said, it's simply down to us, these comapnies don't really hypnotise us, they just offer a quick and easy meal.
It's fast food, if it were quality healthy cooked food ... it wouldn't be fast now would it, you'd have to wait 10 or 20 minutes.

Anyway I'm rambling now, must be tired :-D

  17. Triaxx2

    Triaxx2 MajorGeek

I'll put it this way. After being off McDonalds for a while, I can't eat it. It literally makes me sick. And it's not pleasant so I won't describe it.

But it's not the McMonster burgers that are the problem, though they aren't helping. It's that the RDA is still 2000 calories. That's fine for Joe Farmer, or Rosie the Riveter, who have muscle required, high activity jobs.

But Bob from Accounting, and Mary in HR don't need all that extra muscle fuel. If you sit in a chair all day and don't walk around, all that extra fuel does is convert to fat.

What do school children do all day? PE not withstanding? Why yes, they do in fact spend 6-8 hours a day in chairs, doing nothing. At all.

@Tibbs: Lots of Chicken? What kind? Prepackaged store Chicken? Or local food chicken?

I saw the movie a couple of times called "Super Size Me". you can check it out if you want to.

The guy had an agenda of course, of which, I do not agree that places like McDonalds are the evil ones. It is about personal responsibility which Ned is really getting at.

I do agree though that companies like McDonald's should make it known on their menus how much calories something has, like a lot of restaurants are doing now.

  19. Sgt. Tibbs

    Sgt. Tibbs Ultra Geek

Yes. ;) OK, so mostly store chicken, but that's because I'm lazy and really, REALLY hate deboning and skinning chicken. But I do pick up whatever I can when I'm at the farmer's market, and occasionally my local butcher has a fabulous sale. Unfortunately, budget is a consideration, and the store quite regularly has boneless, skinless breasts and thighs on sale half price.

I do get all of my eggs locally, if that counts for something. On the off chance one of my friends who raises chickens isn't around when I need some, the farmer's market always has chicken, duck and ostrich eggs.

LOL True. But the chicken I buy from the store is NOT that pre-packaged scary frozen stuff as a rule. It's the packages the meat department puts together after they cut the chickens apart. My store still has on-site butchers. :-D

I like a maccy d's every so often, wasn't really into them a few years ago but I think they have improved the food considerably, the fries are the biggest improvement prolly the best fast food fries you can get,you have to eat them fresh though, even if you take them home in a bag they go downhill fast, reheat them in the microwave and you'll turn them into dry sticks of rubber:-D What I've found works is to put them under the grill on some tin foil, they taste almost as good as fresh out of the fryer.

What is it with Maccy's burgers and the microwave anyhoo? you stick them in for 15 secs and they burn your face off,I don't know what they put in them but it absorbs microwave radiation like a mofo:-D

Every now and then I just have a hole in my stomach once a months that a large big mac meal fills:yum And no I don't think I'm pregnant:confused

I think the problem comes with people who think maccys is a substitute for a normal meal,it isn't,its a high calorie treat for every now and then, just like ice cream.

@Rikky... I've always wondered that, you should do it for a minute, the box starts melting (yes, even though it's cardboard :-D )

Exactly. I've long since refrained from leaving them in the box,the ink on them burns or something and makes the burger taste like inky cardboard.

Quick mention of burger king-How downhill has burger king gone? A whopper used to be my favourite burger about 15=20 years ago,now they just taste like fake flame grilled smoke flavour like those fake flame grilled mini burgers you get in tins of mini burgers and beans:confused The cheese has also gone rank I don't even bother with BK cheeseburgers anymore and what's more for one meal you don't get much change from a tenner :eek

Rant over I guess:confused I'm still a member of the burger king club though rolleyes every so often they email me coupons for two for ones ect. so I can afford to eat there once in a while :-D

Anyone else feel fleeced after BK? Forget about Neds maccy thing,I want top talk about BK prices:mad

    And the deficit:mad

And what's that little science'y thing that I see every day that pisses me off,oh yeah Tom cruise the guys a moron:mad

@Rikky... I agree, thier prices have always OTT if you ask me, in fact I've often had the discussion that out of the big 4.

    McDonalds
    Wendys
    Burger King
    KFC

McD's is the best bang for your buck, I go and get 4 large size meals for my troops (although 2 are for me :-D ) for $32.20 CAD, to get 4 meals from the others I can't get it under $40 and KFC generally ends up over $50.
Now KFC generally has a half 2nd meal for us but only nibble meals really, McD's 2 big mac meals over fill me, Wendys does about the same as does BK, but McD's is best tasting IMO and nearly $10 cheaper.

Not to mention I've noticed it seems like McD's only employ people who are reletively atractive, KFC always seems to have heavily overweight, spotty greasy people working.... whats that about?

Free meals or at least 'employee pricing'? I mean frying a chicken in a pressure cooker with oil will keep the water in the meat and therefore succulent, also probably forces oil into the batter, just guessing here.

I know a couple who were normal weight and then went deep frying everything under the sun! Gawd man, they must have both gained a 100lbs when I met them in a supermarket a year later.:puke They must be dead or at least in wheelchairs by now some 8 years later if they kept it up.

Why? Bacon's got half the cholesterol than butter but the same pounds with all greases being equal.;):-D Actually, I save the bacon fat and use it to fry eggs instead of butter, unless I have some rendered duck fat on hand which is even healthier and yet tasty too.:yum

They now sell locally grown Nagano pork in the supermarket, going back to a more fatty pork of yesteryear but much more delicious and succulent than today's pork, only served in hotels and restaurants before. However, at $9 a lb for pork chops, that's only for special days.;) Excellent for grilling!:yum

Actually, it goes something like this:

If you make Instant Coffee in a microwave, you might go backwards in time. ;)

I'm 5' 10" and never weighed more than 135 lbs. until I hit my late thirties.
Within a few years I passed 165 lbs. and started developing a pot belly, which was REALLY strange for me.

I knew I had to stop eating so much "fast food" and change my eating habits, but at first, didn't know what to do.
I remember getting ANGRY when I was out, got hungry and wouldn't allow myself to go to the usual places.
I literally didn't know where to go or what to eat. It took time and a little thought.

There are better choices available now at some Fast Food joints.
I like the chili at Wendy's. There is beef in it, but the rest is pretty nutritious.

I don't like to cook, so I get by on whole grain bread with fat free margarine or organic instant oatmeal for breakfast with green tea and orange juice.
Dinners are usually a mix of vegetables, usually frozen, organic soups like lentil and split pea and canned fish, but Not Tuna.
Sometimes I make high protein pasta with Lots of "natural style" spaghetti sauce, which means no added sugar or other junk.

My last dinner was a bunch of fresh steamed broccoli (I'll Never learn how to spell that :banghead ) with Chinese fried rice and canned wild Alaskan salmon.

But, I still snack on tortilla chips, popcorn, ginger snaps and "fun size" Snickers. :drool

I used to eat things like a "Hungry Man" pot pie which has about 40 grams of fat :(, cause it was quick and easy.
About once a year I'll get a package of Kosher beef franks or turkey franks, sauerkraut, spicy mustard, etc. and pig out,
but eventually I end up with a stomach ache and give it up. :-D

One thing I'm kind of weird about; I only get pizza by the slice, with mushrooms
Covered with tomato sauce. Sometimes I get funny looks from people wondering what the heck is on my plate. LOL

Science is weird and in some realm of existence the MAC D is healthy and in some other alternate realities its not!.... who do you believe, you takes your choice, while I work in Healthcare I don't care as you have freedom of choice!

But I will state I see the problems that high fat and "junk food" causes, but its not only junk food per say, its smoking, stress etc as well as obesity that causes Eye issues.

Are MAC Ds or ilk to blame? well no its laziness in your lives and not wanting to prepare home cooked meals, just have to seek Jamie Oliver's two shows in the USA on school meals to see the crux of the problem, if you deny that school meals in the US is an issue you are in cookooland and same goes for UK schools, feed or kids SHIT and SHIT they eat!

I see the effects of a high fat diet in folk weekly in diabetic clinics and my assessment clinic, its saddening.
