I started using DNS because I had kids on the computers in our house and it prevented the use of proxy servers and allowed more control. Now it's just a pain. How do I get rid of it?

Goldenskull I can't follow the rules

    1. Use the Delete a resource record procedure to remove the address (A) resource record for the server.
    2. Use the Modify an existing resource record procedure to update the name server (NS) records, in zones where the server is configured as authoritative, to no longer include the server by name (as it appeared in the A record that was deleted in procedure 1).
    3. If the server is the primary server for a standard zone, use the Modify the SOA record for a zone procedure to revise the owner field of the start of authority (SOA) resource record for the zone to point to the new primary DNS server for the zone. (If the zone is a directory-integrated zone, this procedure is not necessary.)
    4. Use the Verify a zone delegation procedure to check the parent zone to ensure that any records (NS or A resource records) that are used for delegation to the zone are revised and that they no longer point to the removed server.

Every computer uses/needs DNS Keith - it can't access any website at all without it. Do you actually mean OpenDNS? If so we can easily steer you back to default DNS state.

    Oops. I meant OpenDNS. Thanks.

OK, but I'm a bit puzzled as to why OpenDNS should be causing a problem for you. Want to elaborate?

Anyway, if you want rid of it we need to revert your DNS servers to those of your ISP, so (in XP), Control Panel > Network Connections > right click the active connection > Properties > click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties > set it as in the attached pic. If you are using Vista or 7 it's the same settings but getting there is slightly different.

Let us know how it goes.

OpenDNS keeps popping up on the screen wanting me to do something. Just an irritant. Thanks for the response.

What is the DNS on the Router?

The obtain automatic IP settings will simply use the Routers IP as the DNS and the router will forward it to the DNS that it has been configured with. Get your deafult DNS from your ISP then log on to your router to update the DNS address on there

Well that depends on whether OpenDNS was configured in the router or in TCP/IP. I assumed, maybe wrongly, that it would have been done in TCP/IP, in which case automatic settings would revert it to using the ISP servers. If it was configured in the router then yes, the router DNS settings need amending as well as putting TCP/IP on automatic.

That is a fair assumption, however Keith has another thread open for a laptop issue and from that I deduced he is already using DHCP. If you hadnt seen the other thead you wouldnt know that. ;)

Therefore I suspect the issue is on the router. I am a bit supprised though as in your other thread you said DLink helped you set the router up? Get your DNS settings from ISP and you should be ok.
