Windows shuts down, only right before the desktop loads

I have a E Machines T5254 and it shuts downs after it says starting windows.

If i go to the bios settings before the start up, it will stay there as long as i want and wont shut down. as soon as i continue, it asks if i want to start windows normally or try to fix the problem and repair, either one i click the next thing it does is shut off.

i dont think its the power supply because it only shuts down right before it goes to the desktop and at no other time.

this is a vista system but i have a windows 7 cd so i put it in thinking my OS is bad so i would install a better one, well it runs the disk tells me to press any key to boot, then it loads the windows files, says starting windows, and shuts down.

what can i do? im a novice when it comes to this so any helpful info is greatly appreciated.

Well, it could be the power supply but it could also be heat. As Windows starts it use a lot more resources than just the BIOS does. Open up your case, if it's out of warranty, and check to see if the CPU fan is running, maybe there's a lot of dust in there. Let's start with that and go on from there.

    Welcome :)

Like Augie said, definitely check out and clean the internals and check/refit cables and connections and ensure all the fans run smoothly and quietly first.

Funny you should mention the power supply, that's the first thing that comes to mind for me whenever I see 'E-Machines' being mentioned. Do you have access to another PSU to swap out and test?

the fan is running fine, i acually got this computer from someone who was throwing it away. it hasnt been turned on for a while im trying to fix it since i figured out its better than my HP a510e and my super old compaq 7462. i have pictures of all the bios settings, i took pictures of the screen as i went through the settings incase you need to see them to help.

    Greetings, duval904yeah.

I think I'll play the devil's advocate, go out on a limb and throw in another possibility...;)

Looks to me like your crash is occurring when your hard drive is being accessed/stressed. If the PSU swap and cable/connector checks don't help, you might try booting to a live Linux distro or mounting the HD in another machine, see if you can change your symptoms.

Also, try the RAM dance: reseat/swap any memory modules.

EDIT: Just saw your last post - if the machine's been dormant for a while, you might also consider replacing the CMOS battery. Yeah, I know - you can access your BIOS, but humor me. ;)

i have taken out the RAM and put it back in. i wanted to put the 320 gb HD from the emachines into my HP but the power cable is different in the hp so i dont think its compatible.

Is there no way i can force the system to instal the windows 7? or do i have to be able to load windows before i can install?

You may want to buy an adapter to change from the white molex 4-pin power to a SATA power cable, do you have a SATA data connector on your HP?

As to forcing, I have no idea of what you mean? If the hardware isn't up to snuff then no amount of 'forcing' will help. Please stick to your emachines as you'll confuse everyone by going to the HP..

i only posted about the hp because i was asked if i had an alternate PSU. i know the hp psu is 300watts, thats y i posted that. and i checked, the hp doesnt have SATA.

So if i bought this SYBA SD-LP-SIL2IR PCI SATA Controller Card, i would be able to install my 320gb HD from the E machines to my HP, right?
im just trying to learn about all of this since im a novice when it comes to all of this.

Aah OK, what's the power supply like on the eMachines, power, connectors etc.

i havent been able to figure out what the power supply is. on their site all it says under power device is power supply. i googled it and didnt find much other than people talking about how testing the psu can be done by jumping the motherboard with an alternate psu. how do i do that? i have an old compaq and the hp that have a good PSU.

Well, just replace the 20-pin connector with HP. Don't force it if it doesn't fit. Hook up the other stuff and see what happens. I have no idea.

i dont know, sounds like a good way to **** shit up. if i just wanted to go plugging random shit here and there, i wouldnt really have to go look for help from people more educated than me on this subject.

so basically i need to start by removing the power supply out of the emachines and go from there. i just wanted to be sure its the PSU before i removed it and messed with it since im dont know much about it and have never done it before.

well i took out the power supply. its a delta electronics model dps 300A B -15 B

    imput100-127v/10A 200-240v ~ 5A

300 watts. i notice that its only 20 pin adapter pluged into a 24 pin, then plugged into the motherboard, and there is an extra place for another 24 pin plug next to it thats empty and it says atx v.2.x support.

Ya but what I'm saying is not random though I can't guarantee anything, it's all up to you, along with your homework and some guidance from us.

A tech could probably tell you right off the bat if they're compatible by looking at the power supplies and boards but since these are old machines... with limited info available etc., I wish you luck.

so i guess the power supply on the hp is the same as the emachines so i gonna try to switch it out and see if everything fits, then try to start windows and see if that works. is that the best solution at the moment or is there something better i can try??

its not going to hurt my computer to use a PSU with an imput of 47-63hz when replacing a broken one thats 100-127hz, is it? they are both 300watts.

well i tested it out and it is the PSU. my old unit is done. unfortunatly the PSU i tested that works is from an older hp and it doesnt have the same cable to connect the power to the hard drive. is there an adapter i can get or should i not be using the older power supply anyway?

    thanks.

This sounds like a windows issue, not a power supply issue.

Just for some clarification, when you get to the log in screen of windows, does it act like it's going to log you in by saying "loading your personal settings..." proceeded with "logging off.." ?

or does the computer actually restart itself? I've never heard of it completely turning off after you are able to get to the welcome screen (but not after welcome screen).

And, I know you have a windows 7 cd, but what is the actual operating system you are running? Windows 7 right? Need some clarification on this.

The computer is using vista, but it wont load right. I took my old hp's PSU and tried it and it worked I was able to start installing windows 7. The problem is my old psu doesn't have one of the power cables needed to power the 320gb hard drive in this emachines. So I guess the only option is too buy a new power supply.

You weren't able to install Win7 with your current power supply (not the old hp PSU) ?

Yeah the original power supply from the emachines t5254 would turn off while starting windows. So I tried the one from my older hp a510e and it worked past the startup and I got to the part where it asked me to pick a drive to install windows on and there was no drive available because the power supply didn't fit.

I really appreciate u telling me about the adapter. Im just going to buy one of those.

So now im going to need a psu for the hp. I have an old compaq 7462 with a good power supply but it only like 175 watts. The one im pulling out for use with the emachines is 300. Is it possible to use the. Compaq psu in the hp? The hp is stock by the way. No new additions.

I checked foe the latest drivers and downloaded the software. What are my options? Should I post in a different forum?

Would need to see your device manager with the USB mouse plugged in.

Either access it with keyboard only, or plug in a PS2 mouse (or i guess another USB mouse that will work) and take a pic of it (device manager)

most likely a driver issue.. could be registry too.

K, can you try the following:

Turn off the PC before you unplug / plugin a PS/2 device!

    then..
    • Plug in the original HP mouse which is PS/2
    • Plug in the malfunctioning USB mouse
    • Power on PC
    • Use PS/2 mouse to get into the Device Manager to take a screenshot.
    • Upload here as an attachment
