My friend has a laptop that when it boots up it asks for her administrater or power on password. She thinks one of her friends has set this. She does not have the restore cd. Is there anyway to fix it. I tried loading a different windows operating system but no load!

Hi this is an excellent tool for removing forgoten passwords.....

    http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/

you will need this tool also to create a bootable disc.....

    http://majorgeeks.com/InfraRecorder_d6206.html

just follow the instructions on how to create the disc and boot as you would with an OS install disc, the tool will remove all windows Admin and Users Log in Passwords.

    Hi,
A CD will be proficient and you need to burn the whole .iso file to make it work, yes you can use Nero to burn the iso, it's just I find it a lot easier to use the one I linked , but , that is just personall preference ;),with infra it is only one click action "write image" you just have to point it in the direction of the .iso file.

Are you burning the .iso properly?? don't worry we can come back to that if this next fix does not work....

You need to remove the cmos battery (coin shaped battery next to where the Ram Modules are) here is the service manual for the laptop and it explains how to remove the RTC (cmos) battery including a diagram, this is a very simple procedure to do and will reset the passwords on all of the accounts ......

    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02542102.pdf (page 51)

power off the computer remove the laptops battery, press and hold the power up button for at least 30 sec's, turn the laptop upside down and remove the vented panel that houses the wireless card and Ram Modules, remove the Ram modules to access the RTC when you have located the RTC (just look for the coin shaped battery) you will need to use a craft knife or something similar to gently prise and lift it out, when you have it out turn the machine back over and press and hold the power on button again for at least another 30 sec's, this helps to dissapate any residual power left in the boards capacitators, leave the RTC battery out for a couple of hours, this should remove the passwords that have locked the computer down. Put back together in the reverse order making sure that the RTC battery is in the correct way (take note whilst removing it,photograph if need to), boot the laptop and see if you have gotten past the passwords.

    Hello,
Many of the modern laptops cannot get the power on password reset by removing the CMOS battery. The password is in the Flash Rom and removing the battery will not remove the password. Password reset utilities also do not work. If you cannot get to the battery try the following. Your power on password gave a system disabled key of 89073367.

Run the script on this page. It would be the Insyde H20 (generic). (Windows Binary) It can run on any computer with .NET installed.

If that does not work. Check out this youtube video. The person is willing to reset your laptop for free but I cannot vouch for it.
