Deleting File from HPMEDIAVAULT

I'm having trouble deleting a file on my HPMediavault. I have it connected to my system hardwired into my router. I've allowed backups from my children's laptops to save on the mediavault. As they enter into wifi range, the Shadow software will back up their files. This has been great since I've had two crash and have been able to save college projects for them.

However, one had a virus and using MajorGeeks clean up process, was able to clear the viruses. He unfortunately left Combofix.exe on his desktop and it was backed up. The antivirus software on my computer is hitting on it about every 15 minutes. I don't know why as he's been in NV for a month and this just started. The AV ware (Norton) identifies the combofix file as a trojan.ADH virus.

Since he's not here anymore, I've tried to delete it. I'm on a laptop running Vista Home SP2. The program let's me go through the motions but when I delete it, is says I don't have permissions. I've tried to "Open as Administrator" but there isn't a choice in the explorer.

I checked the files ownership and it is my sons. When I try to take ownership, it says I don't have permission.

I can't even change properties of the file.

Searching on the internet for a solution, I read that the HPMediavault has a Linix system and suggested to telenet into the the vault, then I could surf to the file and delete it that way. However, when I trie to telenet in, I it says, it can't find it.

The internet site suggested using putty.exe to do the telenet but that didn't help at all.

I've used telenet a hundred years ago, but must admit, I don't feel like I know what I'm doing.

    Hi,
You need to run this command to delete combofix ......

Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

I'm up for it but this isn't on my laptop, it's on the mediavault. Do I need to modify the "%userprofile% to the actual directory?

I tried it and the file is still there. The run command closed for a second and then reopened. I tried it several times with the same results. It's still there.

This is something that I am not familiar with sorry :( , can you save that back up to a usb flashdrive and delete the backup off the media vault, then see if you can remove the combofix file from the flash and then replace the back up to the media vault ???, I would also take a look on the HP website to see if anyone else has had a similar issue. I have linked you to the Manual for the Media Vault here....

you may find an answer there ;).

Thank you for your efforts however, I'm still looking for a solution. Nothing in the manual has helped.

The first is the webpage that got me trying to telnet. The second is the software to actually do the telnet. However, I have get it to recognize the vault. When I use Putty, it says, "Network Error: Access denied". I know it's password protected but I don't get anything requesting the password. Could that be why I can't get to the vault? If so, where would I enter the password. Linx isn't my strong suit.

Do you get the "Network Error: Access denied" when you try to delete the file?

In your previous post you stated:

I believe that is the problem. If your son still had the computer hooked up to your network it would have been easier.

Did you try the chmod -R 777 * command? for read write privileges?

You may have to change the owner with the linux command chown first.

You may have a better chance taking the question over to the networking or linux forum.

Is your device GEN 1 or GEN2. If GEN2, SSH is used which putty supports but a name and password needs to be set up.

No. I get that error when I try to use Putty.exe to telnet.
When I telnet in using Telnet, it won't load the Hpmediavault, "Access denied". None of the linux commands work at all, it's like there are no linux commands.

Interesting question. I'll have to research that to determine. I'm not sure where that is indicated. It's late here tonight, so I'll try to get it tomorrow and get back to you.

I'm hoping that the quote you provided may also explain how to do the setting up of a name and password. I have a name and password set up on the system already, but I'm assuming that may not be the same thing to which it's referring since Putty doesn't request an authentication when I try to use SSH.

It must be a GEN 2 as this time when I tried Putty.exe. and typed in HPMediavault instead of \\Hpmediavault, it functioned and asked for a user name and password. I tried mine and my son's usernames and passwords but neither worked so it's looking for something else.

It there more to that quote that explains how and where to set up that name and password?

    We're getting close. :p

According to the link I posted, you need to use "root" (no quotes) as the user name and your password. See post #10.

If you have a box that looks like this it is GEN2.

In putty, did you select SSH? Not telnet.

I am not sure but from the wording in post#10, it seems to be saying to add an admin name and password to the box. Have you added an admin name and password to the box? Can you do this with a web interface? Even though you used an admin name other than "root", you still use "root" as a user name to log in to SSH.

Glad you got it worked out. Can you give some feedback on what you did?

    Sorry. Got excited.

I ran the Chmod -R 777 * command. This resulted in a lot of responses stating the task failed. So I thought it failed.

However, as I looked at the transaction, I noticed each task was numbered sequentially. But there are groups of numbers missing. So I went to the suspect file in windows explorer and it allowed me to delete it.

The best I could figure is that those files that were not locked down were the ones where the command failed. The task numbers that were missing were the ones where the chmod actually worked. :-D

For anyone else that might be having problems I found a way to do it on a Windows machine (7) without having to resort to Linux.

I right-clicked the file and went to Properties, unticked Read-only and clicked Apply, went to the Details tab and Remove Properties and Personal Information, chose Remove the following properties from this file:, then I clicked Select All and Ok. Once I had done that and clicked ok on the remaining window the files deleted without an issue.
