No Sound on Vista

    Dell 64-bit

I downloaded Realtek from you but still I have no sound. I have uninstalled it again.

I'm reasonably new to Vista and it isn't as friendly as XP. I had sound on XP so how do I get sound on Vista?

Is there a simple, uncomplicated way to do it for a non-geek like me?

What is the model number of this Dell? Is this an upgrade from XP? Do you have any yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager? Your Dell should have a service tag on it. You can go to Dell's support site and use your service tag to get the required driver.

    Many thanks, I'll go there.

Belarc tells me it's an Inspiron 531 00. No, it isn't an update because my XP died on me.

I'm not sure where I'd find Device Driver but I'll give Dell a shot.

Oh, wonderful! Dell doesn't recognize my service tag. Now what?

Ran Fix it and got this message:
Peripherals not plugged in. What does that mean?

What's your service Tag number? Can you type it here? I will try to find your audio drivers

Also.. Are you sure you have the 64bit version of Windows Vista?

Can you go into the System properties and double check? I want to make sure we get you the correct driver.

You're right, System says 32 bit.

I misread Belarc. What is said was 64-bit ready.

Thank you. Still learning where to find things on Vista.

    No problem.

Did you find the correct driver now? Remember if you need help you can provide the service Tag number and we can find it for you

Unfortunately, Dell says my system doesn't support their drivers and they don't identify my number. Their best help sends me to Miscrosoft and Fix It, which also tells me it can't help.

I want my old XP back again!

I'll call where I bought it tomorrow and see what they have to say.

    Thanks again.

The service tag number is usually on the Back of the computer, with a UPC type of sticker on it. I think typically 6 or 7 characters long, with both numbers and letters.

But yeah, I agree with you on wanting XP back. Vista is ... not as good :)

The tag number is GLGR9F1. It's possible I made a typo because Dell didn't recognize it when I typed it onto their site.

    I'll try it again.

I just did and got a mesage that there was no supporting sstem on my computer. (as close as I can remember the wording. I couldn't copy and paste it. Install stopped/failed.

The same thing happened when I downloaded via MG.

Are you sure you are opening R180772.exe?

When asked where you want to install to, choose something like:

Then see if it installs properly. If not, we need to manually point it to the driver files in that folder. The setup.exe should at least extract the correct files.

I'll show you how to do the rest, but do what I suggested first please :)

Use the following method to download: Download via your Internet Browser

DO NOT USE : Download via Dell Driver Download Manager - Dell recommended

It's the one I downloaded earlier, but I'll try it again.

Asked me if I waned r\to replace waht was installed. I clicked 'Yes'.

Same message - cannot detect supporting system on my computer.

Let's face it - Vista is brown and smelly.

Where did you extract the files this time?

  24. thisisu

    thisisu Malware Consultant

True, but you're going most likely going to have go through this again with Windows XP, as it comes preinstalled with even less drivers most of the time.

To my Downloads file as administrator. I wasn't given an option of calling it anything or putting it anywhere.

Other downloads allow me to call it something like "application".

Which internet browser do you use?

I mean during setup, it should have asked you where you want to Extract the files. By default, it would have bee nsomething like : C:\DELL\R180772

Right now it's IE9. I've just learned there are problems with it so i'll be switching browsers and going with Chrome or Firefox.

It was a while ago and I might have said I didn't want sound. I'm fairly sure I did, but I wasn't thinking of things like DVDs and U-tube.

Wonderful! Do anything you like except to my D drive. That's where I have things I really don't want lost or touched.

Now, I'm on the site. Which do I click on? The first one?

You got AIM? Or want to private message me your ID and PASSWORD from Teamviewer?

By the way, Select RUN, not INSTALL. (in teamviewer)

I have never seen anything so amazing in my life! You really know what you're doing, and you were so fast that I had trouble following the cursor.

I never knew a program like that existed. I would never have allowed anyone in, but I've trusted MG for years.

    TO MAJOR GEEKS

You have a superb member in THISISU. He went out of his way to help me and spent so much time on my problem. In addition, he taught me how to do other things on this site, like edit my PM options.

Thank you again, Thisisu. If you're ever in my part of the world (Calgary) I'll buy you dinner.
