    I need some assistance please.
I have always hard wired my PC to the internet and yesterday the grandkids came for an overnight, Britt the oldest has a new Sony Viao laptop and wanted to get on the internet so i checked the wifi and there is a strong signal but when we try to connect it asks for a password, now i have never configured my router to wifi so in theory it should have gone straight to setup but it would not.

Now i know the way to recover a password from my PC but it will not let me do it, i can see the signal but can not open it and when i put http://192.168.1.1/ into the browser it finds the page for the router and opens up as ADMIN but again asks for a password (which i do not have).

I have even tried Cane&Able but that can not get into the router so i am lost for anything else i can do????

    All ideas gratefully received.
    Bill

Try entering 'administator', worked on my last modems. Do change it after you secure the wi-fi.

Hi Bill as augiedoggie suggested most routers are shipped with the username/password set as admin and admin, if you look on your router you will see all the settings on a sticker including the wireless key, once you get into your router it is advisable to change the password to something memorable especially if you are allowing others to share your network. If you are still struggling to get in then I would suggest a hardware reset of the router if you can give me themake and model I will be able to tell you how to go about this.

The router password is given in your router documentation, either on CD, booklet, or from the maker's website. However the initial password is usually ridiculously simple. Try 'admin' again ;)

Admin admin did not work and the keys on the router i have already tried without any success.

If it's a Netgear try User, otherwise what's the make and model?

I am trying to find the maker of the router but it is in the name of my ISP so it may take a while.

Thanks for the tips so far but i have been at this now for over 8 hour and will return to it tomorrow.

If you didn't change the default username and password, it is possible someone accessed your router wirelessly and locked you out.

There should be a reset button on the router. Usually a recessed round circle on the back. Stick a paperclip in it and reset to factory settings.
The first thing to do is to change the login username and password!
The next thing to do is turn off Remote Access. What this does is stop anyone piggybacking on your wireless signal to go in and reset the username and password and lock you out again!

Even if you never use wireless, you still have to be sure the wireless part of your router is secure.

    Hello,
It is very possible as plodr sugguested that your router was hacked. On your web access page it stated Mobistar. Is this your ISP? It is also possible that it was preset by your ISP but cannot understand why they would do that because it looks like you are using WPA2 and you need the WPA key in order to set up other computers for wireless. I noticed your firmware version and did a google. Seems like the router is made by Sagem Communications.

I am beginning to believe my router may have been hacked, we have a young I,T, student close by and he may be the culprit.

@tgell the router is made by Sagem you are correct.

I will start by resetting the router and see how it goes from there.

** The default password into the setup screens can be changed by the user. If this is blocking your access to the router setup screens, you may need to press the router's reset button (usually behind a pinhole next to the ethernet sockets see attachment).
If you do the hardware reset it will remove all settings that have been altered and set it back to factory out of the box condition, press and hold the reset button until all of the lights on the router flash and go through the normal start up sequence. Your Username will be Admin and this should also be for the password, though most routers now are shipped with these details on a sticker attached to the router along with the wireless key, when you get into the router settings you will need to change the password/ssid and wireless key, these are easy to do and will only allow machines that you want to connect to your network.
If you need any help in setting a WPA2PSK key for wireless protection let me know as i know a few sites that can ramdomly create them for you, you just need to make sure that you write it down and keep it some where safe ;).

I have resolved the problem with the help of my ISP who used remote connection to my PC and cleaned the memory from the router, they told me it HAD been hacked and were looking further into this.

Thanks to all who gave me tips and help, MGs wins another round against the bad guys.

You are right Augie this is the second time and we have a good idea who the culprit is but he is also very good at covering his tracks.

A quick update on this thread.
My young neighbor had a visit from the police last night and after about an hour i saw them leaving with his PC and a laptop, now i do not know if this has any relevance to my problems with him but i think he is out of action for a while at least.

There's a good likelihood of that being the case, cops pulling PC's from one's home is not a common occurrence.
