Need something exclusively for ebay selling. Only have about $400 to spend. Smaller is probably better, though not micro-mini small.

Don't really know (understand) the difference between Lap/Note/Net (other than smaller size, respectively).

And "Tablet"...? What is this, please??

What is THE, #1 most important element for this type (ebay/amazon/etc. buying/selling) of SPEED/PERFORMANCE, please:

    1. Processor?

    2. Video Card?

    3. RAM?

    4. Hard Disk Capacity?

    Please?

    Thanks in advance,
    Glenn

ok ok...I admit I have no idea what I'm doing...that's why I came here, and asked the question(s).

Now I just saw a short article about "Netbooks"...(WHO KNEW!?!) ??

Sounds like a dream to me - highest portability (?), longest battery life (??) - what not to like (I'm guessing weak CPU's/slow performance and small HDD storage/space (which I don't need - I don't think?? - for my purposes here ?)...............

I use an HP Probook 4525s which I got off of Newegg for just over $400.00. I use it for everyday tasks like surfing the web, eBay, news and even Photoshop and programming. I have had ZERO problems with it and would recommend it. It's lacking on the RAM side, but it works.
    Linky http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834157532&cm_re=Hp_probook_4525s-_-34-157-532-_-Product

    On to the questions
The most important part if used for eBay and similar. Would be...
    1) Processor
    2) RAM
    3) Hard Disk Capacity
    4) Video/Graphics

Aim for Dual-Core processors at the minimum.
2GB of RAM will due, but grab more if you can. More RAM is always a plus.
Aim for 250GB HDD Capacity or higher.

    ---
Personally I would go with the HP you linked out of the two. 1) It's not refurbished and 2) It uses DDR3 memory. The 0.17Mhz in CPU speed will not be noticeable.
    ---
I've worked on a few netbooks and I do not like them. One they don't have a DVD/CD-ROM drive so your stuck using an external disk drive or flash drive to transfer data. They are tiny (understatement) so if you have a hard time seeing a standard screen your going to have to buy a magnifying glass for the netbooks.

And yes they are not as powerful as there laptop cousins, but they should do for what your planning on using it for.

Small screen. Do you want to work from a 10"-12" screen all day?

I just got one of these. It's got a 15 1/2" LED lit screen, is light (5lb) and not a bunch of trialware.

EXCELLENT info...I really appreciate you helping me to break this down.

As anyone who has searched the www for products that they don't know much about (ESPECIALLY electronic/tech products), all the NUMBERS ... numbers-Numbers-NUMBERS ! ! ! (did I mention ALL of the NUMBERS!?!?!?!?), and Asia is just pumping these things out *FOR SALE* as if they're expecting new markets to open-up on on Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter AND Saturn...it's enough to cause pain in Ur-anus (please, pardon the sophmoric humor : ) ... it's mindboggling - overwhelming, really...

You seem really sold on HP (or at least your HP) ... I don't have nuch experience with them, from what I've read, it seems folks either LOVE them, or don't really speak well of them.

In any event, you have helped...seems I have a number of desicions to make, and more to learn, but now with your help, I'm beginning to feel I'm on my way !

    Thanks again,
    glenn...

    The most important elements are:

    #1) Internet speed...

    #2) Price

    #3) Screen size

    #4) Everything else

Seriously though, browsing amazon and ebay is probably one of the least taxing things you can do on a computer. Any modern computer will do this without any trouble at all.

That Lenovo that Just Playin linked to would be just fine. If you are really looking to save money, and are willing to be patient, check out some of the deal websites like www.slickdeals.net and woot.com to name a few. For example, there was recently a refurbished laptop on woot for about $220 that included a docking station. Just check the sites each day and eventually a laptop will pop up. woot has one today, but it's a 17" laptop, which doesn't sound like what your looking for.

I have bought several laptops brand new and the last few I couldn't tell a major difference. I spent more money on the last one and saw an improvement. For a while I believe that you have to spend more money if you want something better. I didn't do that on this last one, I spent time trying to find a good fit for me. Below is what I did............

I took my last computer and did a comparison on every single part listed. I searched for every review of every part I could find listed for the new computer I wanted, and then compared it to every review of every part I could find on the computer I currently owned. I ended up spending about $400 less on a laptop than I would have spent without that type of research. So you ask what is good? I say to you that you should look at what you currently have and make a comparison part for part all the way down the list to determine if you really are getting the better computer.

Don't rule out refurbished laptops. NewEgg, TigerDirect have good deals on these. As others have mentioned, they are all so similar nowadays that brand almost always means nothing as the componenets are almost always the same. These guys always run specials anyway and frankly, summer is THE time to buy when people offer up some great deals without the hassle of Xmas sales when no one has any inventory. I see a pile of them at 399 or so:

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...CatId=17&cm_sp=Masthead-_-Computers-_-Spot 02

Delivery is usually within 2 days to most places. Check out top sellers (usually indicates a good deal in the top few) and even narrow it by price or brand. Price 200-499 for example:

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Category/guidedSearch.asp?CatId=17&sel=Price;Price5

Now to answer your other questions:

    1. Processor?

Unless you want to do gaming or multimedia this is not a huge deal but can affect price in a large way. At least a dual core will do it. At 400 bucks, you are not getting a newer, screaming processor anyway.

    2. Video Card?

Always onboard (built into the motherboard) and you want ATI or Nvidia. Forget ANYTHING else.

    3. RAM?

Big importance. Since your video card is on the motherboard then it shares the computer memory. 3 gigs minimum IMHO as 1 gig could be dedicated to the video card and you need 2 gigs just for Windows 7. Memory is cheap, I just bought 2 gigs for 60 bucks.

    4. Hard Disk Capacity?

Only for what you need. Drives are pretty cheap now and most laptops come with 320GB or more now. Again, unless you want to store thousands of music, movies and photos, the 320 GB drive should do you fine.

Wow, OVER-THE-TOP replies ! Thanks brahman and M.A. (and others) - GREAT stuff here...though brahman's idea sounds a rather rigid task, I do (or soon "should") have some time to do this, though you (and MA too - BIG TIME!) have already helped IMMENSELY ! "TANKS" ! ;) :) :major

Re: Shopping for a FAST Laptop, Notebook or Netbook, @ a "Reasonable" Price

Is THIS (in the opinion of this threads respondents) a "Good Deal", please? --->>> http://www.circuitcity.com/applicat...1&csid=ITD&recordsPerPage=5&body=#ReviewStart

Secondly, if I added THIS--->>> http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-DDR3-Laptop-Memory-CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9/dp/B002YUF8ZG, would not this machine SING at a pretty dog-on fast rate, please??

Oh and of course, "IS" this RAM compatible with the machine, please?

Lastly, is "Corsair" memory, of "good quality", please?

Thanks all very much - and in advance.

ATI is Radeon, Radeon is the chipset.
