Silverlight won't re-install or uninstall

I've been working on a Win 7 64-bit computer, removing some Vundo, Zynga and Funwebproducts. I had a difficult time removing Zynga, and ended up using the unwise.exe in the Zynga folder to finally get rid of it. Meanwhile, many of the other programs became "broke", in that their start menu links were gone/missing, and/or the programs were unregistered. I reinstalled or repaired many of them, and everything was still there (like Live Mail-all mails and contacts appeared after it was fixed), but I am having trouble with Silverlight. When I go into installed programs, and click on Windows Updates - I find Silverlight has been installed. However, there is no option to uninstall it. When I try to reinstall it, I am told I already have the most current version. I can't seem to get rid of it, so I can reinstall it. Any ideas? Thanks.

Try the Windows Installer Cleanup utility. A word of caution. Microsoft pulled this because they said it could possibly break the install files.

um..... this appears to be an add-on for Visual Studio 2010 and this computer has Visual Studio 2008. I ma hesitant to install it(?)

 

Delete this key and then try a reinstall. Export the key first as a backup.

Try Revo uninstaller. The Pro version on their website is also free for 30 days and it has a deep scan feature that might be more useful in your case. There is also an excellent utility called RegScanner that can scan the registry for particular words and group them for deletion. You would enter "silverlight" and let it do its scan. But be careful you only delete entries that are specific to silverlight.

I installed Revo Pro, tried to run the uninstaller, then did a scan, and deleted what seemed to be the issues. Then I installed RegScanner and removed the registry entries from Silverlight v4 which were dated 6-17-11; tried to reinstall Silverlight, but no luck. Then I installed RegDLLViewer, but I am not finding anything. I have rebooted, but still Silverlight won't install, telling me it is already installed. Then I went into uninstall programs, selected Silverlight and had the uninstall option! - I clicked it - it appeared to uninstall....rebooted....and........tried again, installation failed. <hitting head against wall> :confused error id = 1603

 

Do you have any kind of install log for silverlight? It should be in your temp directory? Does the Microsoft cleanup utility see Silverlight now when you run it? If not, open Internet Explorer and go to this link.

In the uninstall link, does it offer to uninstall an existing install?

Other people have reported that giving yourself full permission to following reg key before installing will work.

Also try installing after turning off UAC and cleaning out your temp directory
