Huh? Mobility Radeon HD5730, not detected by the driver.

I replaced the hard drive in my ASUS N61Jq laptop with an SSD yesterday. Since the SSD is smaller than the 500GB hard drive I located the restore discs that ASUS provided with the laptop and used them to get Windows 7 (Home Premium, x64) onto the SSD. I've run all updates, installed Avira and MalwareBytes, and went to ASUS support to get chipset drivers and other stuff. I have everything running except the video driver.

The driver installed right now is the most recent one from the ASUS website, and that means it's over a year old. On my old install (on the HDD) I have been routinely updating the video driver as ATI released a new one, so I went to their website and downloaded the latest one for my video card. In normal mode, the install goes all the way through, reboots and locks my resolution at 1024x768 on reboot. When I attempt to open the Catalyst Control center I get an error that it's not properly installed and can't be accessed.

In Safe Mode, the driver installer fails to detect my video card and then promptly freezes up the installer to the point I have to kill the process in Task Manager to make the laptop usable again. Neither Avira or MalwareBytes are running while in Safe Mode.

The worst part is that I can't remember if I updated to this particular driver on the HDD install, before I installed the SSD, so I don't know if this is the driver or if it's my "new" Windows install.

I either need another driver, or some serious help here. :(

Hmm, sounds odd, how about trying this: uninstall the driver using DriverSweeper, install the latest Intel Inf update then the ATKACPI Driver (both on the Asus download page), after a reboot, try installing the graphics drivers again.

I had the Intel Inf driver already, but not the ATKACPI one. Easily fixed, quick install. Ran DriverSweeper (again :p), did the required reboot, installed the new ATI driver... and got a new error that told me the drivers that ATI want to install haven't been digitally signed by Microsoft, and because of that they cant' be installed. :confused:confused Um, yeah. That's a new one.

Ah, that can be fixed by changing the driver settings, Reboot as normal tapping F8. Then select " Disable Driver Signature Enforcement". Install drivers.

There's a way to turn off the driver enforcement permanently but it's not supported by MSFT and I've forgotten how to do it ;)

EDIT: see also this thread, 2nd post looks good.

Aha! I didn't know there was a way to do that... but I will definitely give that a shot. I'll report back on my progress later, when I'm not on my way out and late for an appointment. :)

Turning of the signature enforcement took care of the weird error messages, but the driver is still not working properly. After installing it (which ran just fine) the video card has a yellow question mark in Device Manager, and the resolution is still locked at a max of 1027x768 instead of the 1366x768 that it should have.

If I hadn't double checked this four times over already I'd say I'm installing the wrong driver. Then again, I've made dumber mistakes with computers. LOL

Have you tried the ATI/AMD driver from, say May? Do the DriverSweeper shuffle too ...

Not yet, but I plan to. Right now I'm going to call it a night, since I'm starting to find it very difficult to resist the urge to do violent and brutal things to the laptop, or at least the drivers. ;)

I have located and bookmarked the download page for previous driver versions from ATI though, and I'll post back tomorrow and let you know how it goes with the old driver.

That worked! After installing the May driver, Dragon Age finally runs at more than two frames per second again! :celebrate

In case anyone else who reads this thread needs older driver versions, here they are. The drivers listed for Vista work fine in 7. :)

    Hi mimsy

I have an ASUS N61JQ also and my hard drive is playing up.
I want to install an SSD - can you tell me what make/model you used?
