Hi, all! Starting a new project here shortly, and am in need of some help. Been a while since I went this deep with Linux (Ubuntu, latest release), and I'm afraid I'm unfamiliar with the latest stuff.

Basically, I want to set up a bridge between my Uverse router and my home network. There are several parts to this, but I'll just stick to the first part in this thread. :)

First question: Does Ubuntu (latest) support gigabit ethernet adapters, and if so, which is better from your experience? Loking at Linksys or similar, but won't buy until I find out which is recommended for Ubuntu.

Second: the bridge will basically have two NICs: one for the public side (10/100), and one for the internal side (gigabit). If there a man page that will help me config this part I'd appreciate it.

also, if anyone has any comments, thoughts, or suggestions please feel free to offer them up! Thanks!

Of course Ubuntu supports ethernet, always has, eth0 IIRC. i RUN uBUNTU 11.04 in a VM presently and it works just fine, I'm no *nix authority though, I'm still just learning.;)

I know Ethernet is supported ;) I was asking about gigabit ethernet, and specifically, recommended brands/models. :)

I don't see why not, gigabit is a popular onboard ethernet. If you're talking about a PCI card then any will do. I just checked my properties and it's a gigabit, most boards are AFAIK.

I started out with Edubuntu as a home server. Gigabit ethernet was recommended for 10 or more clients. What ever your doing your in a good place.

    Welcome to MG! :major

I have used Netgear, Linksys/Cisco, and am currently running with Buffalo FOSS repeaters on the network here (with Uverse). To answer your question requires more information.

What brand of Gigabit are you looking at using on top of the UVerse router?

Do you have a wireless Motorola Uverse modem, or the Speedstream blackbox for a modem?

What kind of connection (XP, Win2000, Win7, Mac, etc) do you have now?
