As my title suggests, I followed all of the steps in malware removal for XP but the "Shop to Win 2" is still showing in the Start\Programs. Can you help me remove it please. I don't know how to attach the logs from Malwarebytes or Spybot but I've attached other logs which you've asked for.

    Thanks in advance.

I can have you attach logs from SUPERantispyware and Malware Bytes soon, for now just attach the log from running MGTools ---> C:\MGLogs.zip.

    Hi,
I did run that. I have to look for that log. I am in PA and going to work soon. I will attach after 7:00 p.m this evening if that is okay.

    Thanks.

That's fine. I will be around later on anyway.

    Hi,

Sorry, I was mistaken. I downloaded the file but didn't run the scan apparently. I did it just now and am attachin The log. The scan prompted me to accept the license for "Hack This"?
Let me know what else you need.

I think I attached the file. let me know if I did't

Re: I followed the XP malware removal but I still have "Shop toWin 2" showing in my P

    No, it was for HijackThis.

Use windows explorer to navigate to these two files which Combofix quarantine. We need to restore them.

    C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\1028_DELL_XPS_MXC051 .MRK.vir
    C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\DELL_XPS_MXC051 .MRK.vir

Rename them to disinclude the .vir extension and move them back to their original location of.: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers

Before we continue, you need to use MSCONFIG to put the machine into normal start up mode.

What are you using for anti-virus??

    Java(TM) 6 Update 22 <--- uninstall this outdated Java.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:

    File::
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore(2).exe

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    Hi,

I'm up to part about starting in normal mode with msconfig? I've used this before but only with more help as I don't know how to do this.

    Thanks.

Please disregard previous - here is where I am up to now:

Sorry, yes the name was "Hijack This" not Hack This.
I renamed and moved the files to the Win/Sys32/Drivers folder. The have the extension MRK now?
    I deleted the Java
I removed my AVG as the instruction in your XP Malware Removal told me to do it at one point in order to install something else.
I googled how to start in normal mode. Run/Start/MSCONFIG and check the top box that says "start in normal" and close window. It wanted to reboot and then I got an error message:
"The procedure entry point Localize String could not be located in the dynamic link library STLand.dll

Then I sent you this email.

    Waiting with baited breath.

    Hi,

Finally finished your list. Here are the logs you requested. However, the dag nabbed Show to Win 2 is still being listed when I click on Start/All Programs. Combo fix did ask me if I was sure that I wanted to delete all freeze files and shop files and I said yes....

    What's next.

And, thanks for being so patient....

    Hi,

I also still have the same error message upon startup Should I disconnect from the internet when I run these checks and cleans - maybe it's reinstalling itself from there? HELP!

You need to dequarantine those drivers again as shown in post # 6.

    What's inside of this folder?

    C:\Documents and Settings\Ruth\Application Data\FCSB000062035

Either tell me exactly, or show me with a screenshot.
    Just delete the entry.

    Hi,

I'll send you the contents of that file this evening. I don't have that computer at work. I don't think that I can delete the entry. I don't want to left click on it to highlight it as I'm afraid it will launch and right clicking only gives me options within this application. No option for delete. Can you tell me how? Thanks for all your help.

    Tammy

Re: I followed the XP malware removal but I still have "Shop toWin 2" showing in my P

It's just a folder, double click to open it or right click to open and THEN tell me or show me with a screenshot, the contents. :)

    Hi,

Ok, I was able to delete the icon from the Start/All Progams by left clicking on it and deleting it.

Attached is a word[doc with the screen print of the file you requested - Shop to Win 2 is apparently in there.

Tell me what comes next - we might almost be there!

    Thanks.

Then just delete the folder. Let me know if it deletes okay! :)

It seems to have deleted okay- I emptied the trash and the computer didn't crash ;). Now how do I stop that error message from showing up? And I can stop bugging you :-D

Re: I followed the XP malware removal but I still have "Shop toWin 2" showing in my P

    This error?
It relates to SigmaTel Audio. Perhaps you would be better off asking about this in software. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required (If we renamed it please rename it back to Combofix.exe.
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Ok, I can work on these tomorrow. Thanks so much. That was probably the most difficult program that I ever had infect my computer and I would not have been able to get rid of it without your help.

Re: I followed the XP malware removal but I still have "Shop toWin 2" showing in my P

    Hi,

Thanks - but just to set the record straight - I lent my laptop to my husband's niece. In the course of one evening, she downloaded several programs (who told her she could download anything???) and apparently she tried to Shop to Win. She is from Poland and is in her late 20's so you would think that she would know not to fall for this kind of thing.....

I have used AVG in the past, what would be your recommendation?

    Take care,

    Tammy
