Can one 80mm fan make the difference?

I took my system into a big box electronics store to see if I could get the graphics card upgraded and the person that helped me said the whole system was running way too hot and tried to install a fan. It didn't seem to fit so he recommended I order a MASSCOOL 80mm fan and a connector for it, will this make that big of a difference?

The computer doesn't have any added fans yet, and he wants to install one on the back to draw the hot air out. I'm guessing that would help but I don't have enough knowledge on this issue to know how much.

And I'm wondering if I could then install a better card in the system or if that would make the issue worse without a fan or with one.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Is it this fan? that should give you some idea of what it's worth at least. How much are they wanting to charge you for the fan and labor? $10 and under I'd say is a fair/good price if you don't know how to install one yourself.

What type of connector is he talking about. The 3-pin prong to the motherboard or the 4pin molex power connector from the power supply? That's what powers the fan on.
Or maybe he's talking about a speed control device you can use to increase/decrease the speed of the fan, such as:

    Personally, I find them over-rated.

I don't think it would make the issue worse with or without. Does the graphics card you're getting have a built-in fan?

What temperature is he saying the system is currently running at?

There's software like SpeedFan which will give you the current system temperatures, or you can simply go into the BIOs and check for a "Hardware Monitor" section. Not all BIOs have this..

    Hey thanks for the reply.

Yeah, that's the fan I was asked to order. They apparently charge $50 to install it I believe.

I'm tempted to just learn how to do it myself for that price.

    The connector is here;

My current card has a small fan. I haven't settled on the new one yet so I can't say anything regarding it.

    The temperatures are as follows;

    GPU: 81 C
    Temp1: 28 C
    Temp 2: 44 C
    Temp3: 22 C
    HD0: 47C
    Temp1: 28 C
    Core 0: 54 C
    Core 1: 50 C
    Core 2: 48 C

Looking at your temps the only one that would need to be addressed is the GPU, it is not very hot but under load (gaming or heavy graphics) it could rise sharply but as long as it stays under 90c it will not harm it.

Fans are an integral part of a PC because heat is a killer for many components, normally a store bought PC will have two fans, one at the lower front and a second at the top rear, this gives an ideal air flow, sometimes we need to help with extra fans and it is really a simple operation to install an extra as long as you have a place for installation.

Here is a pretty straight forward and simple explanation on how it is done.

I agree with BillMcc66. If they want to charge $50 to fit a $3 fan I wave my two fingers and thanks but no thanks!

As the only hot temp is the Core GPU that sugests that your heatsink and fan are not working efficently at cooling your chip. if your case temps are OK you probably dont "need" a fan but for $3 get one (or two) when you get you new Graphics card.

I ordered the fan and the connector. I'm probably going to try to do it myself..

Don't really want to shell out 50 for something like that, like you guys have said.

The GPU does go up to about 99 C under load from games. That's with the fan auto adjusting to 100% as well.

    :highfive

Its pretty straight forward. Just make sure you get the fan the right way around.

Here is another link on installing a 80mm Fan, I'm surprised that a business charging $50 for a 5min job using $10 of parts (at most) can survive. I hope you wont ever do business with them again because they are obvious rip off merchants.

Hardest part of modding/upgrading is getting your nerve up. Remember to unplug, be grounded, and you have the hard parts beat. Most things won't go together unless they are suppose to -- so don't force things. Do a little web reading for 'how to's'.

+1 for don't underestimate the benefits of good case flow. If the manufacturer doesn't address it, you really should. An 80mm fan can make a big difference -- in the right place or absent in the wrong place.

I really encourage people to do the work themselves. If you're able put the straw in a drink box you probably have the skills. Feels great to save money for more upgrades. Once you start, you'll always have a place for more money to go. :drool

Agree with this the reward of doing it yourself is very empowering, $50 to fit a fan.

If you ever used Lego, Mecchano, etc as a kid you can build a PC. The parts are very specific and can only go in the one slot in the one direction.

Alright guys. I installed the new fan, it came today.

The GPU went from 81 C to 67 C but it seems to be tracking back up for some reason.

I have verified that the fan is working.

You did make sure that the fan is blowing outside? Not into the case.:-D

Yeah I'm feeling air being expelled from the back now.

Try holding a piece of paper aginst the fan. It is dificult to tell whether the fan is blowing or sucking with your hand. If it pulls the paper onto the grill you know it is sucking. If it pushes it away then you know it is blowing correctly
