    Bazza,

I had to google gmx.com. Not heard of it before. Primarily I use gmail. and have rare issues with spam.
My ISP provider however is a different story, their spam filters are pathetic, unless you pay for it, to which my usual reply is :kissmy, they charge enough already for their service and have the nerve to expect more to stop the miscreants who think spamming people is "Fun".

Oh, BTW - enjoy Max - I'm fed up with him. :neener

Did you reply and cash you cheque?

These scams while many new users to the internet may not know them, I'm pretty sure you do and to delete them on receipt?

Dave, the voice of logic, again.
Whilst we all joke about winning huge sums of money and the odd special medicinal items we get offered via e-mail. I always automatically delete the message without reading it. Right you are that new persons to the www might misunderstand our jesting about these messages.

The only message here should always be, good things like this won't happen to you or me via an e-mail message, so don't open the mail, (not even a peek), delete it immediately. Save yourself from a whole lot of unnecessary grief and angst. :wave

Sadly I did not receive the cheque :cry.
    I did not reply, either.:)
I actually collect these scams as examples of what "they" are trying in a special Folder to show noobies that I meet.

I totally agree and great post. I partly am torn on two sides to this in that should we keep posing these types of threads as we are giving the scammers free advertising and thus may make them think its worth continuing or to highlight them to aid in other internet users being aware of the scams and not to trust them.

Torn because, we or the core users of MGs know not to reply or trust emails like this as the majority of PC users that fall for these types of scams do not frequent forums or social media on the internet, they are casual surfers and not hardcore geeks.

its a tricky topic to get the message across with if the ones falling for the scams are not listening!

I get 2 or 3 per week in one of my e-mail accounts and as you say we may just be giving the nigerian idiots a bit of kudos but if just one of our readers learns not to get involved with this type of scam we have done a good service.

Since it irked me to see all spam in the spam folder, I've set up my webmail to delete all spam immediately so I don't even see them. It's taking the risk of a genuine email being lost that way but so far it hasn't happened that I'm aware of. The occasional one creeps through in my inbox though.

the term "ham" never really did catch on, did it?

and i would say that spam filters are the least of the problem. since everyone real uses arbitrary ("phony") webmail addys these days -- coupled by the frequent use of sarcastic subject lines -- i get a lot of legitimate email from friends, etc., masquerading as 419.

"ALERT: You have been awarded 25 million dollars!" followed by a real msg about a test, today's meeting, what to pick up at the supermarket, etc. etc.

    don't u guys experience this?
