Can not log in with palemoon or FF

I have been using palemoon now for over a year and never had a problem with it but yesterday i used CCleaner and when i came back to MGs it would not let me log in, now i did not think to try another browser because it was only MGs that would not behave and all other sites opened normally so i sent an e-mail to Tim thinking i had misbehaved in some way and got myself banned but after a few e-mails we (he) worked out it was the browser.
I uninstalled Palemoon and re-installed it but it is just the same and FF has the same result.
The only way i can log in is with Internet Explorer.
Does anyone have an idea as to the problem (see pic for all i get with PM or FF)

    Thanks
    Bill

Bill, can you attach screenshots of the settings in CCleaner please, i have a feeling that something there may be responsible.

Others have had a similar problem in the last day too.

Note: I've used CCleaner for years, as recently as yesterday and today - I do not use the standard settings though - and I've used Mozilla-based browsers for longer, still do.

    Hi Satrow
Glad i am not alone, i was going a bit crazy.
These are stock settings that i have used like forever but i am open to suggestions.

The Cleaner > Application settings screenshot would be useful too ;)

Can you test drive one of the Portable versions of Fx to see if you get the same problems?

The first pic is the applications ??
If i use the portable FF it will not go to MGs and if i do it via the URL it just reverts ti IE.

Have read in MozillaZine some time ago that CCleaner (with Fx settings are ticked) may corrupt Fx. They advised there to untick all boxes pertaining to Fx settings in CCleaner. Needless to say I ignored that advice.

However, since these current problems also affect other browsers such as IE etc. I'm stumped. :confused

Ok Bill, try the 5.01 version that MG's has (the page I linked to also had 1x, 2x, 3x and 4x versions).

Your screenshot shows the System (Windows settings) tab, not the Applications tab ;)

I'll try to find my CCleaner settings to link to, I have them in my Attachments somewhere.

    Bill,
The picture is of the Windows Tab not the Application Tab.
Click the Application Tab and screen shoot that list.

I had the same problem with FF 3.6 on two comps, work and home.
Tried FF with add-ons disabled and in safe mode with same results.
IE9 worked fine at home. (9.0.1 64 bit)
Upgraded FF to 5.0.1 and everything fine at home. Will see Monday about work comp.

Ok Bill, yours do look like the default CC settings.

For a multitude of reasons, I don't subscribe to all those, though most are safe, they don't all suit my way of working and I also add a few others to mine - I use a modified winapp.ini (aka CCleaner Enhancer).

    I'll attach my current settings.

I don't think we're any closer to finding out what has caused this though, try updating to Fx 5 as lbmest has done?

I will give updated FF a try but really i would prefer to find a way to solve this problem in Palemoon as i like it a lot.

    EDIT
    FF 5 works perfectly

    Strange, isn't it?

Have you tried the 64-bit version of PM Bill?

There you go Bill, CCleaner must have have borked something somehow.:) BTW, you being banned is as ridiculous as a flying pig!;) Never think that first.

CCleaner finds PaleMoon as well but it shows under Firefox. Analyze in CCleaner and right click some Fx entries in CCleaner to view detailed results and if one used PM it will show right there.

That's strange? :confused How can that be then CCleaner unless it removes more than the usual in the current version?

Fx 5.01 were updates for Mac only.

@satrow, I also use CCleaner Enhancer.

I'm not so sure about that, I've run CCleaner 2x since people started complaining of probs with FX/PM, etc. and my PM5/FX6/K-Meleon1.7(FX3.15?) are all still working fine.

Agree with satrow as I've ran CCleaner several times in the past few days and am having no problems.

I understand that being banned is unlikely but if there was a hiccup on the site it could have been done accidentally.
It is really strange what has happened to PM and FF maybe one of the updates in CCleaner did it but now it is not a problem i just have two browsers open with FF5 dedicated to MGs.

  19. BILLMCC66

    BILLMCC66 Bionic Belgian

One of the strangest things about this problem is that it seems to be only MGs that has been effected, i have yet to see another site that will not load????

No, nobody in that thread complained about not being able to sign in. Just that the layout and graphics had changed. ;) Therefore, Bill's problem is different.

I suppose that you have bookmarked MG Forums? Have you tried to access MG Forums manually and see if the problem persists? Did you delete the cookies, cache, history etc. in PM? If not, do so now and see if that solves it.

    If the above doesn't work:

Could be that places.sqlite in PM is corrupted? If so, follow the instructions here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Places.sqlite In your case I would first remove the latest bookmarkbackups to prior to when the problem of not being able to sign in occurred.

Ultimate resort would be to uninstall PM and its settings from Add/Remove, reinstall PM and use the migrating tool from PM to start afresh. (You're saying that Fx 5 works fine)

Compare the description of tgell's in his OP against the attachment of Bill's in his OP, not so different. How could either login without the link to do so?

I had the chance to use an older PM on a friend's machine last night, visited the main page, clicked on the forum link and got a similar truncated page, nowhere to sign in either. Grabbing the latest PM 5.0 fixed it.

Gotta be losing a lot of hits from noobs the longer this goes unfixed.

  23. oma

    oma MajorGeek

Perhaps an easier method if deleting cookies etc doesn't resolve the sign on problem in PM.

See if you have a *signons.txt* in your PM profile. If so, remove the username and password pertaining to the MG forum.

Personally I don't sign in automatically in any forum so I don't have that signons.txt in my profiles and can therefore not verify if it works.

    Good luck Bill.

The pic that tgell showed is the bottom of the forum in Fx 5 and says it's on the top in Fx 3. That's how I understood it. If that's not the case, I stand corrected. Assumed that Bill would have the latest version of PM.

    Sorry,
I misspoke if I said it was from 3.6. That pic I posted was from FF5.

Edit: In my 3.6 the only thing on top of the page was the MajorGeeks logo along with the Malwarebytes logo. Also the link to the ad manager. But everything was dark green except the link RedTyger.

Pale moon 5 works perfectly as well but just like FF5 the Google toolbar is not compatible.
So it is a problem with the older versions of PM and FF

As Satrow said we have got to be loosing a lot of hits from noobs with the older browsers.

I can't get the support forums to load in FF (3.6.15) at all except for the Read Me and a few links for some titles. I'll post the screenshots of what I am getting. It worked last time I was in about two weeks ago. You can see, there's no chance to log in with FF because that whole area of the screen is missing.

Hope you can figure out what the problem is. I haven't had that problem with any other website.

This is the problem that a few members are experiencing and we are looking for a solution but it is taking time.

Here's thread in Mozillazine about the Googlebar not working. http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=2232197 From what I read Google won't update their toolbar. One can figure as to why. There is an addon, Add-on Compatibility Reporter that may activate the Google Toolbar but it's not guaranteed it will work. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/?src=api

Great that Palemoon is working for you.

A lot of people who tried Fx 5 and didn't like it went back to Fx 3. That's what I saw at Mozillazine forums. Sad, because there are lot of ways to get Fx 5 to look like Fx 3.

PS: had no clue that by using older versions of Palemoon and Fx, one cannot sign into MG forums?

Getting FX/PM 4/5/6 to look like 3x is easy. Disable hardware acceleration if you have an older graphics card though.

    For the Google Toolbar issue:
This thread may contain the answer, someone needs to flag this whole screw-up with Tim and Jim (oma ? ;) ); around 1/3rd of FX users are still on 3x and many do not want to upgrade for fear of losing functionality or because they don't like the look as mentioned earlier.

  33. oma

    oma MajorGeek

That's what I did ages ago due to youtube not working correctly at that time.
Since I don't use the Google Toolbar either I don't know if the workaround would work. Gather that people who do that workaround manually would have to change it every time a new version of Fx (about every 6 weeks or so) is released?

Yeah, that was known already some time ago at Mozillazine. :) Of course, Google would like to get many Fx users to start using their Chrome browser. Many upset/angry Fx users and blaming Fx rather than Google who was solely responsible for updating their Toolbar as are other developers of addons/toolbars/plugins.

I see that you follow the browser wars quite closely. I'm one that is testing Chrome ATM but not for that reason but for memory leak. I don't want go further as it should be said in my thread. No hijacking from me.:)

  37. oma

    oma MajorGeek

Yes, I like to read about and be current on most software, including browsers.

No hijacking intended here either, but I (re)installed Chrome at least 3 times. Man, the junk that Google Chrome leaves behind after an uninstall, I'm not kidding. :mad So I removed about everything in my machine that I could find pertaining to Google so much that I was afraid it would wreck my machine. :-D Only as a last resort I use Google Search engine and translation. IMHO Chrome compared to Fx is nowhere near what customizability (sp?) and addons is concerned.

I installed FF5 to be able to get onto MGs but have kept my older version of Palemoon for everything else and MGs is on speed dial so before i deleted it i tried it one more time and to my surprise it popped up.

    Good job done fellas.:clap
