I have an ASUS nvidia 8400GS silent card installed and currently using driver version 197.45.

The following site recommends version 175.16
    Silicon Guide: Driver database

There is also version 175.19 available.

Not a gamer, so that is not an issue.

Just trying to determine the best driver to use with my setup.

Windows XP Home SP3 (32 bit), AMD Sempron 3400+ 2.0 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM
Samsung SyncMaster 940BE monitor with Digital connection.

    Thanks!!

Generally, it's best to go with the latest (newest) driver available at www.nvidia.com. Newer drivers often have updates that reduce the risks of the PC hanging or crashing due to a driver issue.

Windows Update and/or mfr. sites don't always show the latest driver updates - that's why I always check nvidia.com.

    Hope this helps. :)

I always say...'if it ain't broke then don't fix it'. My motto operandi.;) Unless you are having issues?

    Thanks gman863.
I Always download the graphics driver from the nVidia web site.
I cited the Silicon Guide reference merely to pose a question.
The latest driver version is 275.33.
So why do they recommend a driver that was released May 16, 2008?

    Thanks Augie.
No, I'm Not having any issues.

However, the 197.45 driver was recommended in another thread on a different topic, as the 200 series are supposedly not very stable.
Also, some people, including myself, have had problems installing the latest versions, although I found a workaround for those problems.

The 197.45 version does not have such problems and was released April 13, 2010.

I was hoping to gain some insight into why the earlier version(s) are considered a "better" choice.

The point here is not which version is 'better' but what works. As you can see in my sig, I'm an nVidia man. I used to update them all religiously and with no apparent improvements either. I don't do high end graphics, video processing or gaming.

Thankfully, I lost my updatecolism addiction just before the update that literally fried people's cards by setting the fan to %20.:eek I now will only update to solve an issue, whichever subsystem it may be.

Come to think of it, I've only updated my BIOS once when I found out my mobo would support a dual core CPU. That was worth the trepidation. People do it these days without even thinking. Yes, the newer motherboards are more resilient what with dual chips and all, but why bother in the first place?:confused
