Sounds very familiar to days of old.
Unless there is a firmware update for your writer, and it is not + , and only +, then could well be the problem.

Would the version of Nero that you're using be a full blown version or a demo version installed by Gateway with an expiriation date?:)

It seemst his drive is actually a Quanta Storage (QSI) SDW-087F, and I can find no support for it. The Sony site does not list this model, so it looks like its a gateway 'part', and Sony advise not to use any of their firmware-Firmware can so easily make doorstops, that I would forget it- seems to be a fairly old dvd writer, but I see it did list dvd+, and -, somewhere.
I would try the dvd that you want to write to in another computer/laptop, to see if it is the dvd itself that is not 'liked' or, simply your laptop writer.
I have had some brands that both my dvd writers did not like, and had to bin them, so it is very possible.
Novice's question could be relevent, if its a demo version of Nero - I am not a lover of Nero, and it can depend sometimes on which version of Nero you are using.
If it will burn to DVD+R , then I would think it either, just does not like this brand, or, if trying another brand, will not write to dvd-r.

Meh, the lasers always fail after some undetermined number of reads/burns. Just get a new one, it's not as if it was expensive.;)

If you are just wanting to update to Windows 7, and you have Vista on at the moment, you can install it from within windows- You have the option to update , or, install fresh from within Vista- If the disc is one you burnt, from an iso, then it does not usually affect installation, on burning features, as far as I remember, so it should work o.k
If you have a genuine copy of Windows 7 (manufacturers, it should load o.k, as long as you set the machine to start from cd/dvd
The reading side of dvd roms, is often different from the wriying to divd.

Well done, half the battle is finding where to change/enable, in many programs, and I know it is not always obvious-but finding it has now given you that boost- Instead of throwing it out the window, you have got that 'solved it' feeling.:wave

I second that opinion, besides you'll be saving money by not busting your window too.:-D Good work man!:major
