    Hi all,
My ten year old nephew wants some computer time. I would like to give him his own login account and limited internet access. Can anyone please give me any guidance on the best way to do this? Any suggestions on maybe the best browser for a child his age. I know we have many Major Geek parents in the forum and would like to know how you handle your children's accounts.
    Many thanks,:wave

IE 7, locked down on a limited, or standard user account (depending on OS), with the security and parental controls turned up.

I say IE because it will be the easiest for the cild.

Thanks Adrynalyne but even with the security turned up i can still get to bad sites. I cannot seem to find parental controls to turn up. If you go to Preferences in google and set it to Use strict filtering (Filter both explicit text and explicit images) Anyone can go back in and change the Preferences. Am i going to have to download a software program to keep the boy safe searching? If so can anyone recommend one? :confused

    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hi

I recently set something up for a friend similar to your needs :)

In Internet Explorer - Tools - Internet Options - Content - Content Advisor

Settings - General, click Supervisor can type in Password box.

Ratings for Language, Sex, Nudity and Violence can be set here using a movable slider.

Then go to Content (same page as before where settings were) - ENABLE - Apply.

Have a go and remember the password you set. The ratings will not be changed by anyone other than you.

    Hope this helps :)

    Hey thanks to all,
The problem using In Internet Explorer - Tools - Internet Options - Content - Content Advisor

Settings - General, click Supervisor can type in Password box.

Ratings for Language, Sex, Nudity and Violence can be set here using a movable slider.

Then go to Content (same page as before where settings were) - ENABLE - Apply is that it changes the permissions for the whole computer not just the one login account

    TimW,
Thank you i downloaded KidRocket Web Browser from the link in the thread sent me to although i think hit's a little young for the boy.

    evilfantasy,
Your link looks like it may be more suitable for our needs checking it out now.

    Thanks to all,
    Dan

From what I see of Glubble is that it is only for FIrefox and not Internet Explorer. You would need some means of not enabling the use of Internet Explorer or nay other browser for that matter. Secondly, it does look like that Glubble is Beta software and perhaps the stability of this would be questionable too.

I just wanted to share that for young children or children with Autism the father of a child with Autism created an amazing browser

    http://www.zacbrowser.com/

There is a also a version for teens and an X out version- I if you put it on your computer you would want this so you can get out when they are through. If it is the child's own computer then you can use either version.
My grandson is 6 , he has high functioning Autism and he loves this browser.

    Thanks

Uhhhh . . . . this thread is FOUR YEARS OLD.

While this info is still important and pertinent, forum members should really try to keep replies to current threads. I do think that interweb access for youngsters should be monitored and/or controlled, there are MANY other threads here at MG that are MUCH more current than this one......

We appreciate the interest and support.....

    :-D :major

Sorry, I thought this was important information and not many people outside of the AUTISM Community know about it!

Maybe I should have just started a new thread about an excellent browser for children and teens with Autism.

Did NOT notice the date, thank you for pointing it out. If you can think of a more appropriate place for me to post this information please feel free to let me know.

    ;) No worries

This is a very important topic with children and even more so when we consider Autism.

You did nothing wrong, but for a topic as important and current/timely as this, a new thread would have been your best choice. Honestly, I truly think you should start a new thread with the topic of "Children with Autism- Excellent Browser" or something similar. And maybe include "Autism" and "Browser" in the 'tags' section at the bottom of your post to help others find the information.

If you need any help or whatever, feel free to send me a PM. :major
