Are there any better freeware options than Zone Alarm and its occasional unpredictable nag screens? (And I'm ho[ping for true freeware cos I'm stingy and I don't like software that lies and says it's freeware when it's really shareware.)

I use Privatefirewall 7.0 available free here on MG . Not sure what you mean by nag screens - is Zone Alarm now nagging people to pay for a "PRO" version or are you referring to Zone Alarm notifying you of connection attempts to/from your computer ?
If you mean the former, PrivateFirewall 7.0 has none. The latter - any good firewall is going to notify you of connection attempts - that's what the firewall is for .

It only happens once in a while. When you boot up, you get a pop-up nag screen from Zone Alarm trying to get to you to upgrade. It happens maybe every 20th re-boot or so.

I like Comodo, myself. Comodo has a free Firewall, but I use their complete Internet Security Suite (also free), which includes their firewall AND antivirus. It does have messages that pop up, but those are EASILY disabled by going into the Preferences and disabling the Comodo Message Center. Also, don't install Geek Buddy... it's a bundled trial that you can opt out of.

As mcsmc I too have Comodo Internet Security Suite installed and find it to act "PERFECT" for my machine, it is very light on resources and is very user friendly, has everything built in to keep you secure from the nasties... and it is TOTALLY free ;) ... http://majorgeeks.com/Comodo_Internet_Security_d6234.html

You could also ask MA for an IObit malwarefighter Pro key for added protection ..... http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=241738

Well, I use Zone Alarm and AVG Virus software. But If I get this Comodo thing I guess I could delete both Zone Alarm and AVG?

Yes. In fact, you should uninstall ZA and AVG BEFORE installing Comodo.
