    Hey Guys,
I'm a bit of a knife collector (I got 40+ :-o). I was wondering if there was anything specific to be called an actual "collector". So anyone know anything?
    Thanks,
    Spock96

    A serial killer? :-D

Nah, I used to collect them too but unfortunately getting them across the border when I moved was more hassle than it was worth.

    You should post some pics.

I have one on my phone I'll try to remember to get off and post of the whole collection on a table I build years ago.

    Hi Spock.
This is relevant to me right now. I just got back from vacation from Waterton park in SW Alberta. There was a little store selling nice looking knives...useful and "decorative", and I think the most expensive one was $50.
I'm not an expert or a collector, but I'd like to have a decent knife for backcountry, but I didn't buy one because I have no idea what they're worth. Any thoughts?

What would you be using it for?

You probably already know of these guys but....

    http://www.cabelas.ca/

They have all the gear you need for the kind of thing I think you might be wanting it for.
They also have some cool knives/blades too :)

Having said that I bought a functional knife with a 4 inch blade from TSC for $35 and it's been awesome, can put a razor edge on it in no time and it holds the edge.

Actually, I'm not sure. I have a Rapala fishing knife which I carry on my belt when hiking, but it's not very solid. My main idea for it is to cut an emergency exit out of our tent if the need arises, like a bear encounter at night. Aside from cleaning fish, it is probably has no other use. We hike a lot, about half in the backcountry and carry bear spray, but I think a good solid knife would be an asset, maybe more like a hunting knife about a four inch blade. I'll see if I can find some info on what they had at this store and let you know what caught my eye there (not literally:-D).
@ Nedlamar. Yes I know of Cabelas and after briefly checking their site they have some pretty expensive knives. I'll do more research before I buy, but I thought I'd post here because it's a knife thread and I figured there'd be some input from others

Now Bowie knives are a bit pricey but if your looking for something to do all that then I'd go with a tactical knife fixed or folder(mostly your preference) or a full out Bowie knife.
Side note about the Bowie--I've seen them used as plates(in movies and such).

Er... I have swords...? They're sort of big knives, but prettier, and more deadly? :p

Well it boils down to the same thinking as power supplies for PC's, cheap out and you'll regret it.
Cheap knives do what they are supposed to do, but good quality knives (usually more expensive) do it better, they will hold an edge, they sharpen well and will last longer without wearing down.

I would say for the kind of thing you are looking for you would want to spend around $50-$80 for a 3-6 inch blade.

I have some Japanese WWII swords, some bayonets and such. The little Damascus Kershaw is my daily carry knife.

I have five or six, mostly what people have given me.

I never use them or have ever used them apart from the small skinning and boning knife.

I'm getting to the age now where having a bunch of weapons fixed to a door seems a little childish, still better than packed away in a box.

Still some nice stuff Rikky. My friend bought a Hungarian Gas mask and wore it around. Our one teacher yelled at him to take it off and the turned right around and said"No, wait I wanna see it."

I use the little knife probably 10 to 15 times a day. Very handy little tool. I never mastered the art of nail cleaning with a knife. Got one of those combo nail clipper, nail cutter, nail filing things for that. Right tool for the job is always best.

I work in a City Augie, not sure what urban jungle you mean. But I do have a bayonet for one of my AR-15's, you know, just for social use. :-D:-D

That's why I didn't buy in Waterton, even though they looked beautiful. I'd rather pay twice the price and get what I need, even though I'm not sure what I need. Maybe I just have small knife syndrome.:-D:-D

I still haven't found the name of the store yet. I'll try some more.

This is similar to what I was looking at. The handle on this one is less ornate. It's a bowie knife which I think Ned said earlier in this thread would be a good choice.
