Tracur and BHO Trojans

    Hello,

I picked up the Tracur and BHO trojans about a week ago by clicking on a bad link during a Google search. My McAfee antivirus picked up the virus when I clicked on the link but I guess that wasn't enough. Now any search links I click get redirected, my home page doesn't open up and I get IE errors if I try to do an online virus scan.

Within the week I did download Firefox to see if I could use this as a work around but it didn't last long and I've deleted it since.

My E:drive is my portable hard drive backup to my C:drive.

    Thanks for the help.

I've also deleted these several times with Malwarebytes but they always come back.

Now let's use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\Fernando\Local Settings\Application Data\0vyjnrk111j80em8nn
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\0vyjnrk111j80em8nn
    C:\Documents and Settings\Fernando\Templates\0vyjnrk111j80em8nn
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\icardres32.dll

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
    "AppInit_DLLs"=""

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message.

Please tell me what McAfee is complaining about.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

  4. nando1

    Attached are the requested logs.

    Computer symptoms are the same.

As far as McAfee goes, on 8/15 when this started McAfee removed the Generic.qrp!ba trojan and then on 8/18 and again on 8/19 it removed the Artemis!FED2C919BBAD trojan.

The name that McAfee gives to the files is meaningless. I need to know the exact path of the files it is removing.

Do you have your XP installation disc? If so, we need you to boot into the Recovery Console and do a:
    fixmbr command.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif

Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop.

Now copy just the bold text below to notepad (Do not include any space above the word REGEDIT). Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    1. Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    2. Click OK at the warning to continue to use The Avenger
    3. Do not change any of the check box options!
    4. Shut down your protection software now to avoid possible conflicts.
    5. Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of The Avenger
    6. Now click the http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/9159/executeavenger.jpg button
    7. Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    8. Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when The Avenger finishes running.
    9. Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    10. A log file from The Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will pop-up for you to view when you login after reboot.
    11. Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). Be sure to accept the license agreement for running HJT.

    Then attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I do have the XP installation disc and was able to run fixmbr from the Recovery Console.

I pulled the McAfee logs and the 8/15 references (two entries 30 seconds apart) specifies the following paths:

    C:\System Volume Information\_restore{3DBD88D2-9FFC-498B-A689-A4771362F918}\RP264\A0025433.exe

    C:\System Volume Information\_restore{3DBD88D2-9FFC-498B-A689-A4771362F918}\RP264\A0025434.exe

The 8/18 and 8/19 references seem to be false alarms because it looks like they triggered based on me trying to download MGtools. Nevertheless, I've included the paths.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Fernando\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\5J35CHBP\MGtools[1].exe

    C:\Documents and Settings\Fernando\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\JR3SX57A\MGtools[1].exe

    C:\Documents and Settings\Fernando\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\SAQJCIFQ\MGtools[1].exe

The registry addition was successful and Avenger launched successfully.

My computer symptoms are the same.

FYI to TimW: Security Task Manager is a valid program ( see:http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/ ) . The below needs to be restored or reinstalled:

    C:\Program Files\Security Task Manager\SpyProtector.exe

In addition you can see it in the installed programs list.

According to your logs, none of the files are being removed. Can you try to use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Fernando\Local Settings\Application Data\0vyjnrk111j80em8nn
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\0vyjnrk111j80em8nn
    C:\Documents and Settings\Fernando\Templates\0vyjnrk111j80em8nn

System restore files will not be removed until you toggle system restore, which we will do when we are done.

Also see if this file still exists:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\icardres32.dll

Check the dates in the ZIP file again. All the files were not updated.;) Delete MGlogs.zip and get a new log. Then see whether they were deleted.

Ok, there’s quite a bit of information I want to communicate so I’ll start in no particular order.

Security Task Manager is a valid program. I’ve had it for several years now but we can discuss this later.

From your last post I manually searched for the four files you listed. I couldn’t locate the first three.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Fernando\Local Settings\Application Data\0vyjnrk111j80em8nn
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\0vyjnrk111j80em8nn
    C:\Documents and Settings\Fernando\Templates\0vyjnrk111j80em8nn

    I did however find

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\icardres32.dll

At first I was prevented from doing a manual deletion. I then decided to see if the McAfee shredder would work on it and it did delete, followed by a prompt to reboot. However, after reboot the file was back. I then decided to go into Safe Mode and try it again (I disabled system restore before doing so). I used the McAfee shredder again on the file while in Safe Mode. While in the folder, I also noticed 3 other files that had the same description (BulletStorm), Company (People Can Fly) and creation date (8/15) as the targeted file. Therefore I used McAfee shredder on those files as well. The files are below.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\atipdlxx32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\atipdlxx32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\usp1032.exe

I then rebooted in Safe Mode and the 4 files were still gone (making progress!). I then went back into standard startup and still couldn’t find the files (I also enabled system restore). Thinking I’ve made some progress I tested my computer symptoms. My homepage is coming up now, my searches are not being redirected and I was able to perform an online scan to completion (used ESET). ESET found and deleted 6 files listed below.

Finding it interesting that I still had Mozilla files on my computer since I uninstalled it days ago, I went into C:\Program Files and deleted the Mozilla Firefox folder that remained after uninstall.

Even though my symptoms are improved, I don’t think everything is cleaned up because the files we had Avenger delete are back. Specifically the below files are still on my computer and I have not deleted them.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\02000000c67797961406P.manifest
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\02000000c67797961406C.manifest
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\02000000c67797961406O.manifest
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\02000000c67797961406S.manifest

I also want to point out similar files I’ve found that have similar date stamps in case they are related (I didn’t delete these either).

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\st1406S.manifest
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\st1406O.manifest
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\st1406C.manifest
    C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application Data\02000000c67797961406P.manifest
    C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application Data\02000000c67797961406C.manifest
    C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application Data\02000000c67797961406O.manifest
    C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application Data\02000000c67797961406S.manifest

Since those 4 files came back that Avenger deleted, is there another file we need to target that is creating them?

I deleted the MGlogs.zip file and ran new logs this morning.

    Thanks for the continued help.

The eSet scan only found items in the Combo quarantine folder.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\Fernando\jcxgsxgzxy.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\02000000c67797961406P.manifest
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\02000000c67797961406C.manifest
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\02000000c67797961406O.manifest
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\02000000c67797961406S.manifest
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\854457284
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\st1406C.manifest
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\st1406O.manifest
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\st1406S.manifest

    Folder::
    C:\Documents and Settings\Fernando\Local Settings\temp\be29e7f1-71ae-4703-50cb-1d52be512f51

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
    "AppInit_DLLs"=""

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{130286A2-EFF6-4B0E-9758-B10C4C0E1C55}]

    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now download and install Iobit Malware Fighter and see if that picks up anything. ( Note that Tim is giving away keys for the Pro upgrade on the MG's facebook page ).

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I did everything as instructed and the requested logs are attached. The IObit scan looks like it picked up some false positives so I did not instruct it to delete any of the files in the log at this point. I'll wait for your review.

I did a system restart and looked for some of the files we had deleted and they still exist!! Below are the ones I found. Since they keep coming back should I delete these from Safe Mode?

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\02000000c67797961406P.manifest
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\02000000c67797961406C.manifest
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\02000000c67797961406O.manifest
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\02000000c67797961406S.manifest
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\854457284
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\st1406C.manifest
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\st1406O.manifest
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\st1406S.manifest

As for the jcxgsxgzxy file, I didn't find it in the previous path but it is a hidden file on my desktop.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Fernando\Desktop\jcxgsxgzxy.tmp

My computer symptoms are improved as before and nothing has changed since my last post. Things appear good but obviously I still have malware on my computer.

Yes, you can try deleting them in safe mode. I frankly do not know if they are malware or not. But we should still attempt to remove them. Let's try Avenger again:

    Then attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.

More progress being made! I ran Avenger and rebooted twice and the files we deleted haven't returned. I didn't have to try Safe Mode. I did add the below file path to the Avenger script when I ran it:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Fernando\Desktop\jcxgsxgzxy.tmp

My computer is running good and I haven't noticed any return of my original virus symptoms.

Good to know. Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
