So yesterday was my (now) 15 year old's birthday. She wanted to go into Philly (Philadelphia) for a couple of things, one of which was so she and her friend could go to Pat's and Geno's steak sandwich places and compare to see who's was better.

For anyone who doesn't know, this is a steak sandwich (a real one as they originated in Philly): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheesesteak
    http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mmWMTrLn77o/TioxSUBmPXI/AAAAAAAAFsg/_G4CqyPMJDY/s1600/philly-cheesesteak.jpg

They started in 1930 by Pat's steaks. Back in about 1966, Geno's opened cattycorner to Pat's and it's been a huge rivalry. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i78BZfqyQB0

You can go to many places in the US and order a 'Philly' Cheesesteak, but it never is even close to what you get here.

As you can see from the picture, it's a big greasy thing.

Yesterday, ironically, Geno died from a heart attack (we didn't know this when we went). My daughter figured he ate too many of his own cheesesteaks.LOL

So...Philly is known for many things...none of them are short of a heart attack on a plate, but the best known one is a Cheesesteak. Oh, and a real cheesesteak has cheesewhiz on it.:-D

    Anyone else?

Definitely Pie's and pasties and secondary Fish and chips, in the working class north where I'm from anyway.

I heard a saying once 'The British eat to live the French live to eat' and its totally true. All our foods are practical and designed to give the most calories, cheaply,in a small package to keep you warm on a windy day.

Meat and potato pie,our 'pie' usually means a savoury pie ate ate as main meal,we also have sweet pie's as well.

    http://www.hollandspies.co.uk/upload/images/106/big/Meat___Potato_Pie.jpg?1305709523

Pasty, the pasty became popular due to the coal mines, the miners would take them to the coal face and eat them at lunch time holding the crust which they'd throw away, basically so they didn't have to get cleaned up before eating.

    Fish,chips and mushy peas obviously:-D

    http://www.gallowaysbakers.co.uk/images/products/pasty-1-1.gif

In a nut shell our food sucks! Really, its heavy, high in calories and blander than matt white emulsion and I don't eat any of it anymore:-D

I'm not the best ad for our country :-D

We have 'poutine' now, double fried thickly cut and greasy french fries topped with fresh curd cheese(squeaks when you have really fresh stuff) and a thick beef gravy.:yum I prefer pig's feet(trotters for you Brits) or as we call it 'pates de cochon'.;)

My favourite still has to be our 'smoked meat brisket'(pastrami in the US).:drool

    Have yer Lipitor on hand!:-D

All the food our city is known for is horrible for you as well. :-D I gotta say, though, it's awesome. You just feel like you need to have your arteries cleaned out or at the very least run a few miles afterwards.

Your fish and chips are awesome. I had them when I was in London.

The poutine looks good. lol...I think I can do without the rest though, augie. Is that for your area? That's not all of Canada, is it?

When you are creating a new post, look up at your bar above and you'll see the yellow icon of the mountain. Click on that and put the url of the jpg in it.

Just make sure you don't use pics that are really large as it screws up the margins and makes people unhappy.:-D

Nastiest food specialties so far....mushy peas and trotters. :-D

Another Philly product are Tastykakes (yes, spelled with a 'k'LOL)

Here, you will see the ultimate Butterscotch Krimpet (it may be ultra processed with tons of preservatives, but it's oh, so, yummy!) Oh!, you will even notice they put our NFL football team on the box during the season. :-D:

You can also enjoy a Philly soft pretzel:

Much better than the posers around the country.

I tell you though I would love to try a cheese steak sandwich from America, steak is probably my favourite food.

We have nothing too special here. The highway through town has your choice of any fast food you want. One of the best burgers I've had though is at Dewey's Pub
Steak sandwich special $6.99 every Friday. That and a mug of Fernie First Trax kicks off a weekend.
Oh, I like to drink there too.

Cook it yourself Laura! Zatarain's low salt red beans and rice: http://shop.zatarains.com/zatarains®-reduced-sodium-red-beans-rice-p-1596.html

Just add some sausage, and bust off on a few of your favorite seasonings.

My recipe for black eyed peas is wash them, toss them in a pot, and add seasonings so they smell like black eyed peas... (Tabasco, red pepper, fresh garlic, fresh ground pepper, and maybe some Tony's.

    Good eating! ;)

Flemish stew or "stoverjes" as it is known here in Brugge.

    http://frenchfood.about.com/od/soupsandstews/r/flemishbeefstew.htm

The recipe is accurate in the south of Belgium but here in the north they replace the beef stock with a 100cl bottle of dark beer.

    Ingredients
1000 g stew, 100 cl Leffe Brown, 6 onions, 2 slices of brown bread, 1 sprig thyme, 1 bay leaf, 1 / 2 bunches parsley, 15 g flour (wheat flour), 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 1 cl vinegar, 2 tablespoons mustard, 50 g butter (baking butter), olive oil, nutmeg,

    Preparation
Cut a pound of stew from the neck of the animal (necklace de boeuf) in not too small pieces of 4-5 cm and allow all sides in olive oil crust nicely. Also rushed six sliced onions and bring together with the meat in an iron casserole (with tightly fitting lid) in the oven. Add a tablespoon of flour and mix thoroughly. Leffe Bruin pour to the edge of the oven contents. Then add thyme, bay leaf, nutmeg, parsley, a dash of vinegar and a tablespoon of brown sugar. After an hour of gentle simmering stew we put the meat in the pot on top of a slice of brown bread, spread with a thick layer of mustard. The total oven time is 1.30 am to 2 pm. Serve with chips or boiled potatoes.

Leffe Brown is about 50% more bitter than Leffe Blonde, but still about as strong in alcohol: 6.5% to 6.6% for Brown and Blonde. The bitterness is balanced by the brown sugary sweetness of the roasted barley as one of the raw materials used. The alcoholic and bitter taste resounding nature is balanced by the rich roasted caramel aroma. These high levels of concentration gentle sweet Leffe Bruin fits well with national stews characterized by a sweet-sour balance.

Okay, I'm not a native of this country, but Australia's food kinda depends on your generation to some extent. Older Aussies often have a similar to English diet, (fish&chips, roast meats, etc.). Younger ones have the ubiquitous Mcdonalds, Hungry Jack's, (a.k.a. Burger King); KFC, pizzas, etc).
For some reason, Australians have a hankering for meat pies, (the original Australian take away). Then there's a weird sandwich spread, called Vegemite, which looks and tastes rather like salted bitumen.
I have tasted Kangaroo meat twice, and ya, it sucked! :puke I don't think anyone really eats so-called "bush tucker", (food), these days. I think it's just for the occasional stupid tourist and foreign documentaries :-D.

This isn't world renowned famous, but my wife made a couple of these salads when we were camping in a national park this summer, to go with the steak. You can just see the potatoes and onions in the foil to the left. I was going to take a pic of the complete meal but it was gone before I remembered.
