    Hi.
Found that many updates for my Windows 7 64bit system aren't installing. 27 of them. Windows Defender won't start, but I was able to manually update it.. I pulled up services and Cryptographic Services isn't started. Trying to start it gives me error 1067. Process terminated unexpectedly. MSE wiped out. Tried to reinstall, and I can't. I have AVG Free on right now.

    Thoughts? Help?

    Thanks

My thoughts are that you probably have a lot of Application Errors in the Event Viewer logs.

Without being able to see all of them I can't really diagnose your problem.

As for your Cryptographic Services problem.

If you run regedit and navigate to the key below:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CryptSvc

Is the "ObjectName" in the Right Pane "LocalSystem"?

Is this current, with AVG or when you had MSE up and running? MSE disables, 'Defender' on Win 7.
Did you uninstall? What do you mean by "wiped out.?"

Hope your system is not infected! The Cryptographic error, has me thinking. Could be wrong.
Either ways, you're in very good hands with thisisu.:)

    Cheers..

    Hi thisisu.

    Thanks for the help.

for CryptSvc, no, the objectname is NT Authority\NetworkService

How do I dig out the Application Errors in the Event Viewer logs?

    Thanks!

    Hi Sikvik.

Well, MSE was installed before AVG. MSE started throwing me errors very similar to the Defender errors. I am pulling this out of my memory, but it was an unexplained error is preventing MSE from starting the service or some such. So I uninstalled and reinstalled. Couldn't complete the reinstall. It crashed. Can't remember the error. It would get mostly installed and splat. So I got AVGfree and popped that on to help in the meantime.

Yeah, between that, the Defender issue, which you have probably resolved, and the crypto services, um... I work on de-scuzzing computers for friends when they do something stupid like open an attachment on an email from UPS. Hoping the scuzz didn't spread..... :)

Thanks for the info and the thoughts!

Something else that might be part of the problem. Computer seems confused about me being an administrator on the computer. For example, with SuperAntiSpyware, I tried to use their update process to download and install the new version of the program, but was told only an administrator could do it. Um, I am logged in as an admin.

Or, try to start Spybot's File Shredder program. I get a Windows popup that says RETRY WITH ADMIN PRIVILEGES? WE CAN RUN THE SHREDDER AGAIN WITH ELEVATED PRIVILEGES IF YOU LIKE TO TRY AS AN ADMINISTRATOR. Then the program starts, whether I hit yes or (x) out of the window.

Could that be related? The installer is somehow under-permissioned?

    Start > Run > eventvwr.msc
    Event Viewer appears

In the left hand column you should see the below:
    http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/9625/applicationlogs.png
    Single click Application

Now CTRL+left click the entries marked ! Error (to highlight more than 1 entry)
When you have done this, click Save Selected Events... (in the right hand column)
Change the Save as type: to Text (.txt)
    Entitle it something like errorlogs.txt
Save this errorlogs.txt to your desktop (or another location you can find easily)
Attach here when finished. (How to attach items to your post)

    Well, that was interesting.

I only picked a few. Basically one of each.

For the ESENT with the EventID there are literally a couple thousand.

For the Application Error event id 1000 task catagory (100) there are a bundle as well.

The rest were one to several.

32,152 events. Oog. I selected all of the error events and it was well over 2k.

Please let me know if there is anything else I need to be doing in there!

    Thanks!!
