This looks like a great site. I have been trying to get organized to use it for days. I downloaded a trial piece of software from the banner at the top of the main page here about a week ago called ++Diskcleaner++ or something like that and it messed up some boot or registry files so I removed it. But there's one file that at boot up, it says Vista can't find it so it's skipping Autocheck. The file it says is missing is something like ssiefr.exe - does anyone know of a way to fix this without spending money? Cheers to all - Chesty

Hi again. I keep hoping that an answer to my question shows up here. I have researched everywhere I can think of and this a lot of people are asking about this problem so it must be pretty widespread. I keep checking here because this is my home page and it appears to have members who know almost everything. Sorry if I asked the question in the wrong area of the board - I was doing the How To Post from the Well, you're here, now what thread. Do I need to ask this question differently, in another forum, be more specfic? Any help with understanding how to deal with this would be reaaly great.

chestnutarms23, yes you do need to be more specific.
    When people read this
they don't want to guess what software you are using. There are simply too many programs with the words disk and cleaner in them to try to figure out what you used.

In the future, when you decide to trial a program, keep notes on the exact name, the date you installed it and any problems. That way, when you post, we get to see the full picture.

You have a run entry in the Vista registry that windows can not find, sslefr.exe I believe. If you use Start then Run, enter msconfig and hit enter, then under the Startup tab, under Location, it will tell you where that registry entry is. Sometimes it is in the startup folder under programs, but usually in the registry under HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (Click on the Run folder and it will list startup items on the right) or also under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Start, Run, regedit to open the registry. You might want to backup the registry with ERUNT, but Vista does keep its own backups as well. Delete just the entry of the erroneous startup item and Vista will stop looking for it. If you are uncomfortable working with the registry get some help. Just be sure to double check what you are deleting and you should be OK.

There are easier ways to remove or disable startup items.

I have for many years used Startup Inspector.

If you have CCleaner installed on your system, you can use the Tools section (Startup) to disable or delete invalid items from the list.

Thanks so much for suggestions. I will try the fixes and see what happens. BTW, the reason I couldln't be more specific about what the downlod was called is that it was a bright green banner at the top of MajorGeeks that promised free cleanup and speedup but the very next day the banner for the product was gone and I haven't seen it since. Many thanks and I'll post back to report on the results. All of the stuff on fix-it type sites never worked and I tried a lot of them about this issue didn't work so I'm going to do the

Thanks so much for suggestions. I will try the fixes and see what happens. BTW, the reason I couldln't be more specific about what the download was called is that it was a bright green banner at the top of MajorGeeks that promised those magic words about cleanup and speedup but the very next day the banner for the product was gone and I haven't seen it since. Many thanks and I'll post back to report on the results. All of the stuff on fix-it type sites never worked and I tried a lot of them about this issue so I'm going to first do the steps suggested by Bugballou because that makes a lot more sense than the fix-it for dummies sites I was trying. Cheers.
