Hi everyone. I'm doing a project for school, and I need some people to answer this poll for me.
How would you feel if a law was passed, which prohibited wearing shorts above the knee, any shirts that reveal any cleavage, or any type of sexy lingerie? Guys use the first 3 options, girls use the second 3.

Are you really expecting anything insightful from this poll or the subject of your project, Zack?

Unless we have members who are religiously restricted from wearing certain things, I don't think you'll find one person (male or female) that would be okay with laws dictating modesty of dress.

  3. Sgt. Tibbs

Honestly, I can't say I would be "very upset". But I would feel it was an asinine law with no point.

Isn't that what many laws are? I find that Zack's question comes from a male POV, perhaps he can work that in on his paper on differing perspectives. Perhaps a study on how women see themselves would be more illuminating from a male POV.

This sounds like rules for your school attire. Schools have a right to enforce "dress codes". :major

Actually, yes. And I know, it's to prove a point.
I was given an essay written by some guy, and I need to prove his point.
My school doesn't have a dress code. The middle school does, and everyone hates it lol. You can basically wear whatever you want at my school.

  16. augiedoggie

  17. Nedlamar

    What was the essay's point?

It's 2011, not many people would agree with extreme public dress codes you're suggesting, but as Tim pointed out, if this if for a school or specific establishment then it's a different argument.

  18. Wenchie

    Wenchie I R teh brat

Yeah I would Suggest, instead of the poll, presenting his arguement for the assigned questions and based on the agree or disagree prove or disprove his point.

This poll isn't collecting any relevant data that would provide burden of proof to support an argument because it's not broad enough. There's not elaboration and there's no information beyond a broad generalization to vote on.

@Zack, I have no issue with a 'dress code' as I went to a private boy's boarding school where we had to wear the school maroon jacket, white shirt, black tie, pants and shoes. I liked it as it made us all equals except for our brain power and plus it gave me a sense of discipline too.

Dress codes are fine. I love going to restaurants that still require jackets for men. You don't find them very often and it's just really nice once in a while to get dressed up since it's just not done much anymore.

From what I understand of Zack's question, he's talking about law governing women's dress. Whether I wear revealing clothes or not (and none of you geeks shall ever know if I do or don't :-D;)) I'd be pissed if that choice were taken away.

Aww crap, I've got to stop using my holey memory.:-o How to govern women's dress? There's always Shari'a law which was mentioned above. Maybe take a page from the Amish or Mormons to make it more relevant to the US. You'd have to go the religious route though to make the argument IMO. That's a tough assignment Zach.

I voted very upset but because of the rights arguement, not because I can't ogle young ladies anymore. Women should be very upset because their rights are trampled, and I can go out and buy a speedo and a "wife beater" and go to the mall.:-o

  31. Triaxx2

    Triaxx2 MajorGeek

I see two sides to the argument. First is that skimpy clothing is not necessary to ogle a woman. It's possible though difficult and potentially hazardous to one's health to ogle even a nun.

Second is that it's a violation both individual liberties, and is something that should only be decided by the invidual moral and ethical codes of the individual in question, whether male, female, or defined by any other descriptor. It should most certainly not be defined by society, nor by any government agency and any such agency should be disposed of, in a bloody coup if necessary.

    Yes, I am militant.

    ---

On the other hand, as a straight male, I freely admit that I do enjoy looking at beautiful women, no matter what they're wearing, as long as they enjoy wearing it. That said, I do find a T-shirt and jeans to be a very nice look, and it doesn't have to be a tight T-shirt, nor 'skinny jeans' which look STUPID. But as long as she's comfortable, both with what she's wearing, and how she looks, I'm going to enjoy the sight.

So no matter what stupid law, or rules exist to stop it.

It doesn't surprise me in the least that the majority of voters are guys who would be mad about this :-D

But seriously, I would be thrilled for one reason and one reason only. I am so tired of young girls/women walking around with the booty shorts and tied up half tee-shirts or halter top with their chests hanging out thinking they look cute when they really look like skanks. I don't care if you are fat, skinny, young or old, the only person who thinks you look cute is you, everyone one else thinks you look like a skank.

It especially bugs me to see 11-12 year old dressing like that trying to get boys attention (oh and you will, just not the kind of attention you probably want, no respectable guy wants a scandalous looking chick even at 12). Why would parents let their children go out of the house like that?? do they even care that their young daughter is walking around looking like a prostitute?? ugh rolleyes

    sorry /rant

Not to get HBT, but, how would you legislate morality as far as dress? I voted upset because I don't believe the government should be setting our moral standards.

Wear what you want, as long as bits are covered. Use your own morality to define it farther.

It is legal for me to wear a speedo to the pool. Now, that is not an option that I will wear. My choice. Just like it is to all others when it comes to taste and fashion.

Zack, If you remember anything else in your life. Remember this. -> Old fogey, married on the 7th for 36 years to the same woman that still kinda likes me sometimes and loves me always. As I have the same thoughts on her.

Woman will dress as they want to or by their beliefs do as they will.

If you did a simple little stupid and she starts going off on you big time. Your wondering why she went nukelear on something little. Left your cloths on the floor and she tripped on them?

It's not about what you did at the moment. Keep quiet and she will start telling you what you did wrong that time. And-> important! Let her talk and she will give you a litany on what you have done in the past to tick her off. You were just not around to hear it. Then you'll get the whats mostly ticking her off on letting her speak.

On the by the way, the past month, you left the seat up again and she "fell in" using the bathroom in the night with out a light on. Ordered a pizza with onions you like and she dosen't, ect.

    Women here, agree?

Wow! A lot of conflicting viewpoints. All of this information is very useful, and I will probably be using all of this information.

The information I need is not how people would react to that law, it's about how people react to that question.

Know what I find strange about cleavage:confused That women will stand in front of the mirror before going out in the morning and decide how much cleavage to show.

I find it very strange that a decision has to be made with regard to the amount random guys during the day are aroused.

I guess I can understand it makes sense when looking for a mate but why do married women still show cleavage?

I find it all rather peculiar:-D

It's more about how much we feel like not making eye contact. Or if we're having a bad hair day. ;)

No, seriously...for me, it depends on where I'll be going before I come home. Work? No cleavage at all. Out with friends, maybe a little. Out with the guy...depends on if I'll be sitting leaning over his shoulder while he plays poker or not. :-D

You're going on the assumption that women are trying to arouse anyone. Maybe, they, themselves, like their cleavage. Maybe the shirt they fell in love with was a bit lower cut and makes a great outfit with the pair of pants they have.

and are you telling me that after getting married, you want a woman who no longer cares about how she looks? Thinking I'd be a bit upset if my husband no longer felt the need to look good After I married him. That's kinda like false advertising.:-D

  41. Mimsy

It's actually even simpler than that. Dressing to look good means dressing to highlight your good features while hiding your bad ones. Women with ample cleavage tend to have generous curves in other areas as well, but as long as they dress to draw attention to said cleavage, practically no one they interact with is going to notice the belly flab. It's basic misdirection, or "marketing", if you prefer that term.

Yes, I count myself in the above group. :)

Exactly! It's not always about you. I know it's hard to believe for the majority of straight men out there, but the most of the women you see every day actually do NOT spend all their time trying to figure out how to best get your attention. Because from our point of view, the vast majority of men we don't know simply aren't worth the effort. :-D

That would make him absolutely unique in recorded history. Or gay. ;)

Momen and men dress on what they think, for them. Highlights their good points. Vanity is more so in some, less in others.

Saw a 300 lb woman with a fuzzy top in pink and spandex bottoms once. I will never get over that sight on eww. Guy with a beer belly that was around 9 months gone with a short lenth T/shirt and jeans. Mirrors are help full before anyone goes out. Man or woman.

Have to agree with Mimsy as woman are mostly more clothes savy then men on putting things to-getether that go well with other things they wear. They want to look nice to themselfs, not others.

I have always tried to coordinate my clothes (no brown socks with black pants and shoes) but here in Belgium they have some outrageous dress sense.
Some of the women who are far too old wear miniskirts or tight pants that show the outline of their underwear and men with big beer guts wear tight pants and tea shirts and the color coordination is just zero.
In summer girls wear long boots and in winter men wear tee shirts.
There is nothing more pleasing to the eye than a well dressed woman.

Obviously Rikki has a death wish. :D

As for Mimsy's rant, I feel obligated to point out how fashion, and morality shifts over time. Consider that in public in victorian times, what you now consider modest would be exceptionately scandalous. For a very long time, even showing ankles was scandalous. Now? Strappy high-heels.

Do I agree with the fashion choices of young girls? No. I think the parents of prostitots should be publicly flogged. (That's one of those punishments that really shouldn't have fallen out of fashion.) Do I alternately agree that an acceptance of sexuality even if somewhat misplaced is better than the pathological fear and hatred of it showcased in times past? Certainly. Do I feel that it's better to see a parent who explains why the youth shouldn't go out looking like they do, rather than 'because I said so'? Absolutely.

So where do you draw the line? At precisely what age does each girl become old enough to be responsible for their own dress? You can't define it. Because it changes from one person to the next. Even between a pair of twins, the variances in personality are sufficient that one might be 'mature' enough one year ahead of the other.

And define maturity? Does it mean understanding the consequences of their decisions to dress in what they're wearing? Or does it simply mean old enough that they don't dress like what you dislike?

That's really what the original question is. Do you support allowing one group defining the standard for everyone? I say no.

  49. Mimsy

I didn't think my "rant" had anything at all to do with morality. :p In those Victorian times you reference, the same principles applied as they do now. A woman with a gorgeous neck would dress to draw attention to it (perhaps with an elegant collar and understated necklace), a woman with a less beautiful neck would raise the hem of her skirt an outrageous extra inch to draw attention to her dainty and well-shaped ankles.

So the principle of drawing attention to your good traits and away fro your bad has always been there. Fashion and society's notion of what is appropriate and what is not only dictates how to do it, not whether or not it's actually done, because it always has been.

And strappy high heels are a great way to draw attention to legs and ankles, if anyone wants to do that. :)
