I am retro fitting a Compaq CM0204 from Windows XP to Win 98SE.
I successfully got the OS installed but the video drivers are only 16 color at best.

The video card is part of the mother board but when I went to examine it the only number I can see around the monitor connection is

    Motherboard
    174043-101

and stamped over the Compaq Computerco is
    d0054

All the other stickers outside appear to be just serial numbers and not related to the motherboard.

I know that Win 98 just had the bare essentials when it came to drivers, but COmpaq does not seem to be around anymore to get the installation drivers for this motherboard.

Does it look familiar to any of you and do you know where I can get improved video drivers???

    Thank you.

    Hi, Welcome to MG! :)

Compaq drivers should still be on the net. What is the compaq model from the front of the case and if the model number on the sticker on the back is different give that too.

Sorry, I misread your entire post. Please stick with Iain. (My guess is Intel 810 series video adapter.)

Persario is the Model on the front case.
    The Series number is CM0204.
There is a number above the serial number tag that reads QW 10963.

When I Google this I get nothing helpful, which is why I can to the real brains of the Internet.

The problem with "logging on" to the hp diag site is that right now that machine cannot log on. You would be surprised at how many basic programs require higher video color than 16 and a larger screen resolution than what I can do now.

I'll go there however and see if they have any information.

    Thank you.

I thought this would be relatively simple.
Without the original installation disks is proving to be daunting.

Again, I should stay out of drivers threads because it is all guess work for me but is it an Intel or AMD based processor?

I am not that quick on the tech spec, but what I think is the processor says

    V/A VT8501 - Taiwan

    Any help?

There is a proper way to go about finding drivers and this isn't it. But it looks like you may have an AMD based machine rather than Intel. It has been a while since I ran Win98 but I believe you have Device Manager in Control Panel.

Try Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware tab?>Device Manager and then give the Processor model and tell any yellow question marks you see. Also is there anything under Display Adapter?

Turns out it is a Presario Model 7360.

Thank you to all of you and I will give that a try.
Sorry for the delay but I just survived the great Southern California blackout of 2011 and I am still resetting all my clocks. ;)

The irony is that I have to download them onto my Win 7 machine, burn them to a CD then move them to the Win 98 one. It has USB but does not yet recognize \a flash drive. I am working on that next. :cool
