Why don't we have a suggestion area?

I have been trying to find an area to post this, but there is no area. My suggestion is below.

The search function is lacking when you do a search of everything from downloads to forum posts in the search function on the front page. It is slow, freezes almost 50% of the time. Also I can't pre select areas to search, like if I wanted to search downloads only, in the MultiMedia section only, I can't. First I have to type it in what I want, then I have to filter again by hitting the downloads button. At this point the search usually freezes, or takes a long time to load.

Probably just bugging everyone, but I think that most would enjoy the freezing issue to go away.

I think this is the perfect place for your post, and you're right - there is no forum named Suggestion Box. ;)

We just had another discussion about MG searches Here.

I never had a problem with a search "freezing", although I'm not sure what you are referring to. :confused

In the search results list, Downloads are easy to distinguish from forums results because they are preceded by [MG].

Also, if you look at the page address, which is the last line in each listing, a Forum result will start with forums.majorgeeks.com/.

That's because we don't WANT your suggestions. You must bend to our will and whim and be abject slaves of whatever we deem. RAWR FASCISM.

Oh wait... that's not THIS message board.... hehe. *runs away*

    Hi

I dunno as searching for me is ok, but I have to add that searching forums becomes much worse due to in-line logs from anything from malware logs to tech specs and networks logs, these add spurious data to any search, which is why I do not use Google now as its full of junk data, when you wish to search a file type only.

We have strived to limit in-line logs as you maybe aware of in the malware forum and drivers forum to name two, but it is difficult to educate everyone on this potential nightmare issue of logs adding junk to searching.

Mjnc, try doing a search from this search box in the picture. Try doing 4-5 searches, let me know if you did every search without flaw. I would like others to do this as well please and let me know the results.

Try this one? It seems to only search files for me... and help topics.

    Hi Wenchie

I did not get the same search results as you. I imagine you typed in something like the word "Anti Virus" or something. Try typing the word "Stop Watch".

For those of you who do not know, there are 3 different areas to search from on the front page. Try searching the same search from each one. If you get only download results such as that after you type in "Anti Virus" then you should get the same results from all 3 search boxes. You will note that the same thing occurs in reverse when you type in "Stop Watch".

Let me stop this silly argument and prevent people from making stuff up. The search is slow, it freezes all the time. That is my suggestion, I am done with the suggestion. Thank you all for listening.

    Firstly, I am aware of only Two search options on the MG home page;
the Custom Google search at the top, which searches only the MG site, and the search at the bottom of the Files menu.

BOTH searches will provide results for Downloads and the Forums.
Note that additional search results are often available by clicking the (page) numbers Below as
    1 2 3 4 .....

Actual Filtering is only available AFTER doing a search from the Custom Google box.
You can select either Downloads, Forums or Mac.

As was noted in the previous discussion, the Custom Google search
sometimes fails but the Files Menu search is very reliable.

If you look at my last post I noted:
Whichever search you use initially, Only the Custom Google search will be available On The Results Page after the first search
and my tests have shown that it Always works OK at that point.

    @Rikky
Don't you know yet? It's the chicken or the Egg; scrambled ;)

No I think he was saying that when he does search, the search function causes problems on his machine while it's searching. He's stating it freezes almost 50% of the time and the process he's stating could use some improvement IS the fact that you have to search first THEN filter.

He's Suggesting that there be advanced search options available to begin with and to fix the indexing issue causing the freezing.

Although, I am confused about part of his post. If you're doing a search for a non-download term, like stop watch, why would you expect it to only find download features when downloads including that term likely do not exists? The system is guessing, and offering what it perceives as viable options because it has no idea what you mean. It's a line of code, not an AI. Where as, if you search Antivirus, the other suggestion offered, it's going to find 100 downloads because that's a specific term commonly used IN software.

Does that make sense? Sometimes people think I'm trolling when I'm actually trying to be helpful because I'm mostly a bitch.

Search is a limitation of two things:

1: Our backend is old and we have had a new one in the works for years and it has better search. This can also be said about no comment section and many other limitations.
2: More importantly, this is Tim and Jim. No shareholders, no big offices or employees. It has its downside, wheels turn slowly but methodically.

You made a statement that said that when you do searches you only ever find downloads within that search. I am suggesting that you are typing in a word that is not contained within the forum, it is the reason you are lead to believe that a search box only gives you download responses instead of download and forum responses. I note that all the search boxes behave exactly the same.

The whole point of what I said in my previous post was to tell you that you are mistaken, and that you chose a word that I did not. And to let you know that on other download sites they do have a few stop watch applications. I use head phones and many times cannot hear the alarms go off when I need to get stuff done, so I went on a stop watch search. That last couple sentences really don't matter, just elaborating on why I said what I said.

And I think I confused people when I said 3 search boxes. The third at the bottom only appears when you are in certain sections of the site, while simultaneously the search box on the left disappears when the one at the bottom appears. It is a funny deal, but I guess you only ever see 2 at any given time.

And I do like this site, I just had a suggestion. Seems like more hassle to make a suggestion than it could be worth.

I am done and will read no responses. I'm getting tired. If it is important to you, then PM me.

Hope you see this. Hope you read my post above. Not a lot of independent sites left out there and we are one. You can email tim@ this website ANYTIME. I will read it and usually respond.

Wondering what OS you are using ... might it have something to do with it? Is this the only site you have the freezing problem with? Have you tried it with firewall off or setting lower? :) I suspect it may be something like that ...
