College math courses are ridiculous

You have a quadratic function. You find the two x-intercepts of the parabola. Congratulations! You just accomplished...completely nothing.

This is college grade material? Try doing it by hand on graph paper, there's beauty in there. ;):p I love math! It's too bad you think differently. What's the point of transistor technology? Damn same stuff has been around for 60 years, just shrunk a bit. One needs math here.

I absolutely hate math. Problem is, I am going for a BS in Computer Science, so advanced math courses are required. I love the challenge of programming code, but I don't get how the challenge in math is fun. When I start to understand something in math, we start something completely different. In programming class, everything literally builds on everything else so once I understand something I can still put it to use even if it is weeks after we covered the source material.

I just don't get why these math courses are required for computer programming.

Doh. I could have told you that. :p

Disclaimer: I may be slightly unbiased from hating said college math courses. ;)

    Ditto.

Been there. Done that. Hated it.

. . . Yet, it's kinda like basic training . . . I'm glad I had to go through it, but I wouldn't want to do it again.

Each math course builds on the foundation of the previous one just like the programming courses. You have to understand the previous course before going to the next.
After all, the computer is a giant calculator doing 1s and 0s at the most basic level. And in Comp Sci you need an understanding of different bases to work out solutions to problems.
Depending on how far you get into the science, then you need the theoretical math for looking at future developments.

(Biased opinion as I'm an estimator and numbers rule my little world.;))

I didn't do any college math, but grade 11 and 12 math was awesome. I liked that no matter how complex the problem, it had to make sense in the end. A's in math and science, C's in English and history.

I was in a boarding school and had mandatory 'study sessions'. There were idiots hiding a book inside their texts(prolly some sex thing) while I was solving problems two chapters ahead. They are still idiots!:-D

Heaven's, Speculant!! Math was a fright for me. Either one has the aptitude or not. I never had it but it was compulsory. Got good grades as most of my time got killed studying it. It did take away time from other subjects!
A link on what we were studying in yr10, on my educational board.. akkk..

Yup, one has it or not. Just the same of my hate for my history teacher. 'Names and dates.' No socialogical input at all which would have made it interesting! I passed with a 51, I should have flunked!:-D

I think your looking at it the wrong way, math is a tool that helps you save time that's how I see it anyway.

Really they should show you how what your learning helps in the real world to motivate you,I love the idea of being able to work out if something I'm thinking about is feasible without getting off my rump.

Algorithms are a big part of programming, whenever I see a repeating graphical pattern or virtual physical world I begin to wonder about the algorithm that created it,every game ever made is jam packed with algorithms.

Not that I do any programming I spend enough time sat in front of a computer alone, and it bores the piss out of me:cool

Haha, no thanks. As much as I absolutely hate math, I need to pass on my own merit. I had advanced calculus last year in high school and I learned absolutely nothing because my teacher gave us all the answers, even for tests.
