Laptop display issue

I have an HP Pavillion dv5000 laptop. While booting up, the Windows splash screen looks like it is in 16 colors. After the splash screen, the screen looks a medium-dark gray. Plugging into an external monitor, the splash screen looks normal then the screen goes black (probably a bad format).

I have replaced the inverter and checked the cables and they seem fine.

Could it be the cable itself would have to be replaced? I just don't want to jump on an $80 screen if I don't have to.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

If you are are experiencing the same issue with an external monitor then I believe this to be the video card failing, can you test it again on an external ?? if you can post back with the results.
What OS version are you using ?? 2000/xp or vista!! have you updated the video driver lately??

When I plug it into an external monitor, the splash screen looks like it should. When I say it goes black, I mean the last person probably didn't format it properly, no big deal there.

I haven't done anything with the drivers as the last person that had it junked it (rescued from trash bin).

 

Uhm, well, you may have to haul around another monitor with that notebook

Take a look at this: Could be a Video Wire, your getting juice, thats good. Maybe a driver issue? Got a pic? Sometimes different pics show different issues.

You might see the presence of random lines all over the screen in some occasions in your Laptop. Often, troubles are created due to this. You would see the vertical and horizontal lines. You could solve this problem easily with the help of LCD BIST test. For this you would have to press the function key and follow the instruction as the LCD BIST runs several colored screen.
