    #7658 - 18U
    Windows XP

I unintentionally uninstalled my Soundmax driver, so I have no audio output. To make matters worse, I have no idea where (or if I still have) the software disk is. When I attempt to search for the hardware from the device manager, I see the Audio HD Audio Bus (which I had downloaded from the Lenovo website itself)**, and it has a yellow question mark over it. I double click on it, and only the option to update functions. That brings up the Hardware Wizard which ulimately brings me "code 28".

**I've tried both 7ka114ww.exe and 7ka403ww.exe and I got "This operating system is not supported by this software".

I have already tried a system restore twice. One from 2 weeks ago, and one from the day before I started with my uninstalling. I was informed that it couldn't restore from either date, and each time the hardware wizzard was the 1st thing that appeared.

As of right now, I do not have any audio driver installed because I simply decided to unistall it in hopes that I will be able to start from scratch with a possible solution.

    Ok,
Still post the everest report for me, but, try this fix also....

download and install the chipset driver here....

Now install your Audio driver from here....

    http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/7ka114ww.exe

follow the on screen instructions to install and then restart your machine, this is important as your system needs rebooted to recognise the changes and allow them to take effect.

IE will not let me open the UAA driver link. It tells me my connection is fine, so either refresh the page, oprn page from a link, or check to make sure the address is spelled correctly. I this several times, all with the same result.

FWIW, I tried the link on FF also, and got: "Firefox can't find the server at h20000.www.hp.com"

    Hello,
Try this link for the UAA.

  8. gr8flscott

    gr8flscott Private E-2

OK, so that link worked, and then I downloaded the driver. When I checked out the Device Manager, it was there but still with the yellow question mark and exclamation point. When I double click, now it is a code 1, and when I try to reinstall, it starts all over with that darn hardware wizard.

I must be doing something incorrectly, right? Does it make a difference that in the Device Manager it is listed under "Other Devices"?

  9. tgell

    tgell Major Geek Extraordinaire

Did you install the chipset driver as requested by iain.t? Do you have any additional yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager?

  10. gr8flscott

    gr8flscott Private E-2

There are no other yellow exclamation points in the Device Manager. I did install the chipset, but then deleted it before rebooting. Did I misunderstand the instructions?

*please bear with me as I am not very computer savvy

  11. tgell

    tgell Major Geek Extraordinaire

Correct, you do not want to delete it. Install it and leave it. Can you also install the Modem driver. Is a modem shown in device manager? The audio and modem is linked on this computer. For linux the modem must be enabled for audio to work. Not sure if it is the same for windows but may be worth a try.

    Listed here.
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-68478

After installing the modem driver, make sure the modem is enabled in BIOS.

  12. gr8flscott

    gr8flscott Private E-2

I do have a modem, with a modem driver, enabled and listed in the device manager.

I reinstalled the chipset and rebooted, but it reamins in the same state of affairs. As far as this step not working is concerned, I only downloaded the chipset itself rather than running it again. Should I just redo the entire process as per iain.t's instructions?

  13. tgell

    tgell Major Geek Extraordinaire

If you do not have any exclamation marks in device manager, I am not sure what the problem is. When you open Device Manager and click the plus sign on Sound, video, and game controllers is anything marked? Also, please run dxdiag and see if anything comes up on the test. Look under the tabs for errors.

Also, when you go to Control Panel and select Sounds, is there a device listed in the default playback device drop down box on the Audio tab?

    http://blogote.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/windows_xp_sound.jpg

All of the drivers iain.t listed are good for your computer. Hopefully iain.t can jump in here and help.

Edit: You said: I only downloaded the chipset itself rather than running it again.

Just to be clear. You did install the chipset driver per iain.t's instructions, correct?

Another option would be for Lenovo to check what drivers need to be installed or updated.

    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=TVSU-UPDATE

Edit: you need Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 in order for this to run so that decision is up to you.

    Hi

Reinstall the chip set and then reboot then install the audio driver that I linked for you.

  15. gr8flscott

    gr8flscott Private E-2

Unnfortunately, I did that already. And I installed my ThinkPad System Update. The only difference is that the "you have new hardware" message, and the Hardware Wizard, does not appear when I log-on. Everything else is the same.

When I ran dxdiag it told me that no audio device was found, and same thing with the Sounds option in the Control Panel. I'm beginning to think that the only fix may be to get my hands on the installation software. I'm afraid that will be easier said than done.

If that does wind up being the only solution, you must know that I appreciate all of the help I've recieved here. It went far above and beyond my expectations. Thank you very much.

If you are sure you have all your important data backed up including any offline emails to another drive and you would like to take the computer back to factory state you can do the following.Hopefully your model has this feature.

    iain.t MajorGeek

Here is the link to the drivers page for your system.....

    http://support.lenovo.com/en_GB/downloads/default.page?

a factory restore may well be the way to go, as you may have corrupted files that are stopping the fix working !!

When was the last time you ran any security software... virus/malware scans ?? have you ran ccleaner before??

  18. gr8flscott

    gr8flscott Private E-2

I ran Malwarebytes right after I found out I had no sound. I didn't think to run CCleaner until you mentioned it, but I did and I'm still in the same boat.

When I can afford to buy an external back-up, whether it be a drive or flash drive, how many GB will I need in order to store my data?

  19. iain.t

    iain.t MajorGeek

That would depend on what you wanted to keep !! if you are wanting to keep programs that you have installed you will need the softwares activation key to reinstall and get it working again.
I would create an OS disc from within your system first before trying to do a factory reset, as it may not work !!! to create an OS disc follow the simple instructions here.....

    http://www.howtohaven.com/system/createwindowssetupdisk.shtml

It is best to have an install disc anyway, just incase your system will not boot.

Didn't see it suggested (I may have read over it) but have you checked the Windows services to see if Windows Audio service is present, running, and set to Automatic?

Sometimes, for some reason (albeit very rare), I have seen cases where that service gets deleted from the registry when updating hardware and/or drivers. Without it, audio hardware will not function properly - if at all.

Not hard to correct, if by chance that is the issue.

  21. iain.t

    iain.t MajorGeek

Thanks for that Spad ;), though the issue here is that his system does not recognise that it has a Audio card,in that line of thinking I believe either he has a currupt file blocking the configuration or the card is failing, but, as you point out it may be windows services not been configured correctly, and will do no harm in the OP checking his services.
To check that Windows Audio Services are running and configured correctly do this.....
Start> Control Panel> Admin Tools> Services> scroll to Windows Audio Services> right click> Properties> check to see if the setting is set to auto and the program is started> click the dependencies tab and check that what win audio depends on is showing and started also by checking them individually in the services menu .

. . . just a thought . . . maybe check the BIOS and make sure the on-board audio is enabled and make sure the setting for "PnP OS" or "Plug And Play" is set to "NO" or "Disabled". I struggled with audio on a client's laptop about a week ago, everything in Windows said it was working perfectly; when I chose a "sample" sound from the "Windows Default Sounds", there was a small lag like the sound was actaully being played... I went to BIOS and disabled "Plug And Play OS", and then BAM!! The sound became audible.... it's worth a shot!

Thanks dlb ;), yet another solution that has slipped my mind, I think I may be suffering OAP syndrome :-D:-D dementia setting in !!

Turn for the worse: I went into the BIOS and didn't know what option to choose / where to find the audio stuff. I exited without touching anything (or maybe not?). Instead I went to the the Services menu and disabled the Plug and Play there. Nothing changed, so I changed it back to automatic and then rebooted. When I rebooted, my little computer in the lower right-hand corner had a red "X" through it telling me that my ethernet is disconnected (yet I can still get onto the net. Along with that, I tried to print something, and it says my printer is disconnected. What the hell did I do?!

  25. tgell

    tgell Major Geek Extraordinaire

Check to see if the Plug and Play service is enabled. Is this a wireless or USB printer?

One thing to check. Click Start>Printers and Faxes. Is the printer icon greyed out with the word "Offline" underneath? if so, right click the printer icon and select "Use Online"

  26. gr8flscott

    gr8flscott Private E-2

When I do that I get "Operation could not be completed". However, I forgot one important thing: there's noting listed in my Device Manager. And now, when I click on "Plug and Play" in the services menu I get "Configuration manager: The Plug and Play service or another required service is not available". This is just crazy! What could I have possibly done to cause this?

In an admin account click Start>Run and in the box type "regedit" no quotes.

    Navigate to this key.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PlugPlay

In the right pane of the window what is the Value for ImagePath?

    It should be %SystemRoot%\system32\services.exe

There may also be another CurrentControlSet labeled as 001. You may also want to see what is listed under those keys also.

You may also want to do a System Restore to a day previous to when you did this.

OK, thanks. They System Restore worked. Suddenly, after this last fiasco, I don't really care about the sound anymore!!!

I downloaded the driver from Levono and stripped out everything except the HDaudio driver. The inf has the vendor id and device id you listed. I attached the zip file. Unzip the file in an admin account to the desktop. Right click on your device with the exclamation mark in Device Manager. Click the driver tab and press the update driver button. Tell the wizard you have the driver. Point it to the inf file in the folder you unzipped. Hopefully it will work. If not, I am out of ideas.

Edit: Create a Restore Point before you do this.
