I have a Compaq presario SR1000 Product: SR1519UK and am interested in putting some video files i have onto dvd. To do this i am attempting to convert them into wmv file format. However this takes a very long time and takes up all my single core processors power it also makes it run quite hot. So i am looking to upgrade my cpu to atleast a dual core to speed things up and cool things down.

Can any body tell me if my mobo can handle any other cpu's??

Motherboard: Motherboard manufacturer's name: MSI MS-7184
HP/Compaq name: AmethystM-GL6E

CPU: Socket: 939
Supports AMD Athlon 64 X2 (up to 4800+) and Sempron (up to 3200+) processors

Chipset: Northbridge: ATI RS482

Given it's a socket 939, the amount of "upgrading" is severely limited. Using plodr's specs posted above, AMD no longer makes socket 939 CPUs - you'd have to take a chance finding one used on eBay. Another issue is memory speed & capacity. Can the board support 4GB?(this is what you'll need for heavy video editing). What is the current memory speed? If it's DDR 400 or DDR2 533, it'll still give disappointing performance if trying to edit large files.

If you can afford it, here's a recipie for a system that will easily handle video editing:

* AMD AM3 840 Quad-Core CPU ($100 or less)
* Motherboard ($70)
* Video Card ($55)
* 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz Memory ($27 for 4GB - this is not a typo ;) )
* DVD+RW Drive ($21)
* 1TB HDD ($60)
* New case (whatever you like - it's doubtful your old case's wiring and backplane will support a new motherboard).
* Decent Power Supply, 400 watt minimum (about $35)
* A new copy of Windows 7 (about $100)

A dualie in there is like night and day for video editing! As to amount of RAM, I only had 1gig with an x2 3800+ and the video took some 2.5 hrs., perfectly fine by me as my machine became usable after the Venice 3000+ was dumped.

''IF'' you could find a new one it would be extremely expensive... and buying a used one no matter where you purchase Used is Used and you have to rely on the Exact wording of the add thus if you do have an issue with it you have the legal right to return it. I have bought over the years from Ebay several and to date all have been OK.. a decent size is an AMD 4200x2 939 which are reasonably priced. The conversion software I use is VSO ConvertXto DVD which is not a CPU Hogger.

Ok so i have found 2 i like the look off, both are second hand.
One is a amd athlon64 x2 3800+ @ £30
the other is an amd athlon64 x2 4200 @ £40
Any advice on which would be best would be gratefully recieved.

Also ive been told it would probably be best to replace my heatsink aswell. Would this be advisable? Also any ideas on which one would be best please!!!

I had the 3880+ and loved it. As to the heatsink, I reused my original that came with my Venice 3000+ with no ill effects. I'll check the TDP for your Athlon.

EDIT: Your old one is 51W vs 89W for the new one. That's warrants a new HS/F. I guess I was lucky.

Ok well going back to an old part of the thread. Ive converted some files to wmv so i can use windows dvd maker. All works fine however it will only let me put 18 clips on it. Is this normal or am i doing anything wrong?

It doesn't go by number of clips, it goes by total size of the clips added together. When a disk is getting close to full, you should see some sort of indicator.

Yeah it said there was only 31 mins out of 150 on the dvd. If i can only get that much on a disks id need a hundred. Any ideas on how i can get more on a dvd?

Not sure if this will solve the problem, but check the "help" files or online documentation for the software. If you are using a free/trial/evaluation copy of the software, it may have limits on the amount of data per DVD -- limits that will go away if you purchase the full version of the software.
