That is a very unflattering picture of him.

I just watched Star Trek iV last night...I love that one.

It says he said Star Trek is way better....I have to agree with him there.

Well, I liked Star Wars. Especially the first one. Simple, but effective plot.:cool

Also - most agree that Bill ('Fatty') Shatner sucks pretty hard these days, too.:-D

I also agree with my homey, Star Trek was wayyy better! Star Wars was just a glorified shoot 'em up though well done for what it is.

Star Wars was more fantasy with very little or none in science fiction. Star Trek was definitely science fiction. Very little to compare them. :)

Only true aficionados could make that differentiation.;) It is true as Trek's stories were about advanced beings with god-like powers and not some nebulous and dichotomous universal entity. ST's aliens/enemies had their human like foibles.

I just take it where it's coming from. Star Wars was basically a fairy tale in a space setting. Star Trek was more pure Sci-fi, often with parodies and strong political messages relevant for the time. I've been a Star Trek fan, (but not necessarily a Shatner fan), since the original series came out.

ST also dealt with human/alien cultural evolution in some their episodes which science fiction stories deal with. Whereas, with SW, the stories were based on a battle of good vs evil in a "religious" sort of way.

I'm not sure you can actually argue that Star Wars is not science fiction.

I think science fiction is more about futuristic worlds, races, cultures, tech, travel. I'm pretty sure both ST and SW have all aspects of those. SW had the space ships, the androids, the weapons, the alien races...same as ST did. The way they are politicized doesn't make them science fiction or not.

I think the point is that Star Trek has some actual groundings in science. For example, the antimatter engines on the ST ships are at least theoretically possible.

I don't think there is such a basis for "using the force". Or light sabers.

Am I in the serious minority when I say I've only seen maybe 10 episodes and zero movies of Star Trek and only the very first Star Wars movie? Yes, I know I am. I can only imagine the fan-boys on both sides of this fighting to the death over this. Sci-fi just never appealed to me.

William did get me a better price on a hotel once so I guess I will side with him only on that fact.

I can't argue the actual basis in science behind either as I didn't pay attention, but are you saying there's no grounding in science behind Star Wars? How about humanoid robotics?: (just to pull up a quick one) https://inlportal.inl.gov/portal/se...rentid=7&mode=2&in_hi_userid=3338&cached=true It's not quite R2D2 or C3P0, but I think we are headed there

Hehe, I was in a small boarding school in '66 and about the whole school was in the TV room, my friend and I would get there a half hour early just to have a seat.

It then got packed quickly with the other 98 students and along with five or six of the inhouse teacher/Franciscan monks. It was a glorious time and I've loved sci-fi/fantasy ever since.:) http://bestsmileys.com/scifi/13.gif

    Right lets get serious:major

I agree, the force,Jedi mind tricks, telekinesis, reincarnation, ghosts ect. ect. is all magic and fantasy and doesn't appeal to me at all even as a kid.

Sci-fi and magic just don't mingle.

I don't consider Star Trek a sci-fi movie,I consider it a fantasy movie set in space therefore I don't think Star wars successfully mixed fantasy and sci-fi,it did however successfully make a fantasy movie look futuristic.

If I could simplify it even further I'd say in a fantasy movie the heroin uses magic 'usually' to defeat evil and find their inner spirit:puke:-D In a sci-fi movie the heroin uses technology and lateral thinking to harness technology and win the day :highfive high fives all round:-D

It's all opinion anyway so me saying Star Trek pwns Star Wars doesn't mean anything:-D

Well firstly, I have and sill do, love Star Trek. I was also of the age group that along with the space race and general scientific excitement of the sixties, was brought up with the original series/cast. But love it or hate it, Star wars was partly responsible for Paramount deciding to make the motion Picture, and the later follow ups.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_Phase_II

One of the main purposes of Science Fiction is to throw out ideas loosely based on science, that often become reality in later decades/centuries. Star Trek was a fusion of Buck Rogers and a space wagon train, (Hence the "Trek" bit). Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers were considered impossible fantasies at the time. A few decades later, men walked on the Moon.
Inspiration for 'Flip-phone' cellphones was partly based on the 'communicators' from Star Trek, only ours our way better, (so much for the 23rd Century).
The Star Wars 'religious' thing was intentional. George Lucas wanted to take the common denominator out of religions and Parapsychology and apply it to an interplanetary setting.

I watched the original Star Trek so many times, dad would just groan when it repeated again.
Loved Star Wars also as great entertainment.
    I don't care which was better.:neener

I kinda like both and for scifi they both do a great job of stretching the imagination.

    They both suck equally :p

Nah, I'm sure they probably don't, to some people, I just could never wrap my head around sci-fi. My aunt used to watch Star Trek and every time something happened, I always thought that wouldn't happen in real life! I'd get annoyed by it so I had to stop watching shows and movies so I wouldn't get angry, guess I'm just too much of a realist :-D

I must admit i liked star wars the first time around and at that time is was really futuristic but now with all the new technology that we have it is old hat.
