For our 10th wedding anniversery my wife presented me with a genuine antique Civil War M1840 NCO sword! It's in very good condition. Dated 1863.

    Lord, I love this woman!!!!!

Thank you, sir - and congratulations on your recent 36th! Impressive.

The sword is a beauty. Fairly common type, as civil war weapons go. It was manufactured by Ames, who made thousands of swords of various types for the Union during the war. More, in fact, then all the other makers combined. It hasn't been mistreated; but it does appear someone at somepoint tried to clean it up a bit, but it's not too bad. At least no one has taken a grinder to it in an effort to "sharpen" it. Very little pitting on the blade. Overall the dents and dings one might expect from a 148yr old weapon. The blade is as straight as an arrow.

No history on it, or any special markings or engravings. Unknown if it was used in combat - based on the type of sword it is this is doubtful - but it does bear evidence of having been carried quite a bit by a right handed individual. Based on the markings it does have it was inspected by A.D. King, who inspected swords for the federal government from 1850 to 1865, according to my research. A few more pictures of the markings:

She won't even buy me a cool sword in my own brain:cry

And I think she's cheating on me with an old memory of David Hasselhoff:cry I keep hearing 'Looking For Freedom' coming from inside my right temple and two people laughing and discussing how baywatch was under rated...

    :-D

According to my research, the Xena blow up doll comes with a Nerf sword ;)

    :) Thank you, Dyamond!

Our friends reaction to her gift breaks evenly along gender lines as might be expected. 100% of the males think it's fantastic, and the females for the most part just seem confused by it (one actually remarked, "It's not even new!") - there were a few exceptions among the fairer sex; notably the female police officers I know ;)

Wait, she got you a USED antique sword? How crude. :-D:-D

Wouldn't it be interesting if in the hand grip there was a note with a record of the people its killed?

    Morbidly interesting that it is:-D

  25. Spad

    Spad MajorGeek

Exactly - it bears telling that same wonderful lady collects antique vases . . . But she would smile and say "that's different!"
    :)

I can relate. I doubt it killed anybody, owing to the type of sword it is - but who knows? It's possible. At its point in history bladed weapons as a battlefield tool were fading, overshadowed by the firearm. Yet this sword is a deadly weapon, terrible in its purpose, yet beautiful in its form. I have used countless firearms; handguns, shotguns, single shot, semi-auto, and full auto - Yet not a single one has matched the feeling of power and pleasure I get when gripping a good, solid blade. Guns are deadly. Swords are deadly, and perhaps more brutal then a bullet - yet they remain beautiful works of art just the same. Poetic, somehow.

That's a part of what makes them beautiful. :)

As many of you know, I love my guns. But have a special affinity to the more primitive weapons. Love swords. Need to find me a bo and start working with that weapon again. In competent hands, often the bo beats a sword. Don't see many antique bo's...:cool

Yep, and a Kevlar vest won’t stop a blade, as there are thousands of p.s.i. pressure at the point of entry, (unless you're using the armour plate inserts, of course). A problem in the U.K. and Aust., where knives are more common than firearms. Sometimes simple is more effective.
