Looking at the suggested threads, and from prior experience, these all seem to be unique situations.

Anyway, I already have one (desktop PC) wirelessly connected, but I am sure this Belkin Router will allow at least a couple more wireless connections (total of four [4] I believe), and I sure would like to connect my brand-new Notebook that I received today....

I'm going to send a screenshot here of the connection info on this desktop machine (and am seriously wondering exactly HOW (?) it is, that it's labeled "UN-Secure"...? Supposedly I have the highest level of encryption possible available "WPA2"...?

    It's a Belkin N Wireless Router (I want to say model "ECF563"...?).

If your security is WPA2, all you have to do is in the network icon for the wifi, is left click, find your SSID, enter the passphrase for that ssid and connect. There is no extra to do with it. Windows Vista & 7 have made it so easy, a five year old can get a system online.

Well a five year-old would likely have better tech-intuit then this 51 year-old :-D . . . but in any event...I "DID" manage to get myself online, thanks, but what on earth am I going to do about this nonsensical "un-secure" nonsense...??? I need to be using ALL the security at my disposal (or I sure as hell would LIKE to be using it!!?!!).

What can/should I do, call Belkin (as I always seem to have to do, whenever my router comes into play)...please?

    Thanks and in advance,
    glenn . . .

As long as you used a password to connect, you are good.
Google "WPA2 shows as unsecured" and you get hits.
I'll need to research and get a fix, for some reason the windows bubble is reflecting your connection (unsecure) erroneously.

    Cheers..

Well thank you very much, but do you mean the password prompt on the Welcome Screen, please? I didn't think that had anything at all to do with my router...?

No the password/pass-phrase for your router's SSID which is the reflected in your screen shot.

    Cheers..

Try setting up from above. If you can access your router from step 1.

Navigate and setup, "Enable Wireless Security in Belkin," Step six.

If the new machine automatically connected to your router, with out asking for the wireless password then, your router is not wireless protected!!!

Cheers.. Got to rush out now. Back later

Thank you so much...I am just no seeing this...it causes me great anger, as I have practically BEGGED here in the past for the most important security matters, and then folks come-along (often someone "new" to MajorGeeks, or someone I've never seen here before), and assure me that I'm 'fine' if I'm online...well, as we are seeing now - nearly two YEARS later, I am NOT! Not fine not protected not well, knowing this. And now that it seems David ("Halo") is gone (?) I don't know WHAT I'll do here...end-up in the Malware Forum I suppose.....

I will try my best to work this out from the link that you genorously and kindly provided to me.

    Thank,
    glenn . . .

ok, already I am stumped...if I need to run the CD, well, this new computer does not have a CD drive...?

And also, in step one, do they mean to physically connect this new computer by wires/cables? I need it to be a "wireless" connection, please, this is a notebook computer...(?)

I am so angry that this BRAND NEW computer is now NOT protected. Last time I called Belkin support, they didn't help at all really...they did "something" (I don't recall now what it was, but it didn't help get me going), that tech seemed uninterested in getting too "deep" with me, sort of like he just wanted to get me off of the phone as quick as possible...I don't know WHAT to do here. Are these things getting more complex with time, becuase it seems the more I learn, the faster I fall behind in my knowledge, and what I've learned in the past seems MOOT...obsolete.

PS - I "DID" get a message, that gave me a "password" of some sort...said to "write it down", which I did, and that I would use that password to connect all my computers to a "HomeGroup"??

Don't freak out on us now!;) If you have used the suggestions that have been given to you re security, you should be safe. The next step is to secure the router/PC connection.

I have always used a rig's Mac address entered into the router to accomplish that but someone else with more expertise can answer that one better than I as I obviously don't do this often like most people. It's not a guarantee, just make a strong password using characters/numbers/ symbols on the router for the admin password.

BTW, David has work up to his ying yang.;) Give him a break.:)

Thank you Auggie - just "for the record", I was not coming-down on (complaining toward) David, I was just frustrated, because he was always so quick to come to my" aid/RESCUE...and equally polite about it all. David/"Halo" has been a real CHAMPION for me here!

Now, I am VERY good at making passwords (too good, sometimes if you know what I mean?), I believe my saving grace here has been that I am (and have been the past two years) physically located in an very rural, mountainous place (few-to-no network hackers here...I have about 3 or 4 neighbors within a mile radius, and they are all elderly, and I know them all...that's no "guarantee", but I'm far from any city...and even far from any suburban area.

I think I am going to attempt to proceed from here, via Belkin online support. I am not confident with that, but I loathe the idea of doing nothing . . .

Thanks again, and to whomever in advance,
    glenn...

No, you don't need the CD. Go straight to step 1 to access your router.
Then to step 6 to set up wireless protection.
    Cheers..

Just to add, don't bother with the Ethernet cable. Do it all wireless.

Well, long story short, I lost my internet connect, all my efforts to reconnect failed, so I had to call Belkin tech support, and am back online now...will check the other wireless connection downstairs tomorrow (later this morning, technically), it's 01:45 here, and I need to relax - thank you very much for your time and efforts ~

    Best,
    Glenn

grc, I do not like Belkin's, nor Netgear consumer, same with Dlink. Get a Linksys to replace that Belkin. As for setting up the Netbook, ditch any client the manufacturer sends you, do not use wps, just left click on the network icon for wifi in the taskbar, choose your wifi you want on, add the passphrase when it asks, and bam, you are online.
