Gateway NV53 windows home premium. 4gb AMD athalon II dual core M300 @ 2Ghz. 64 bit OS My problem is that this laptop from cold boot takes 5-10 minutes. If it hibernates on previous use, it may never come up and require a cold boot. Once past the boot and login sequence it seems normal and very usable. I am more understanding than my spouse. I have saved it from being tossed like a frisbee.. AVG and Spybot Search and Destroy report laptop is clean. any Ideas here?

    Greetings, DocCountry.

Try starting the machine in Safe Mode. If the startup time improves significantly when booting into Safe Mode, then some 3rd-party programs or device drivers are the likely culprits.

You listed your OS as 'windows home premium' - please clarify.

clarification: The computer properties reports " Windows 7 Home Premium" service pack 1 as the operating system.
I will try to boot safe mode and compare the times.

    Follow these steps :

    Start
    Run msconfig
Start up tab ( unckeck boxes of the programmes which run during first boot )
    Apply
    Ok

windows will ask you to restart
    Restarting your machine is necessary

after that your machine will be quicker !! :wave

    Ok I will do that.
I timed the boot. 1min 10 sec from power on to user screen. two minutes until icon screen after password. but it may be another minute or two before the browser will open.
in safe mode boot to password is about 45 sec, password to browser is about 15 sec ( but nothing really works. )
    I will do the msconfig.
    thanks.

Try running a chkdsk to see if it is having trouble reading a particular file.

Computer>right click C: drive and select Properties. On Tools tab select Error Checking>tick both boxes and schedule for next boot. Reboot and let it run. See if any difference.

Win 7 Home Premium, I'd replace AVG (too slow, bloated and not good at catching things - this from a MS MVP in security who cleans off computers) with MS Security Essentials. Also run the Windows 7 firewall instead of a 3rd party one.
Most computers come with security programs. Are you sure you have cleanly uninstalled whatever was on it when new before you installed AVG?

I just used this program on three of my XP computers to remove AntiVir (which is also slowing down the computers) before I installed MS Security Essentials.

Watch the video so you know what screens you will see. It was pretyy straight forward and I ran it off a USB stick.

Disable AVG from startup, you can use msconfig (temporarily) as prompted by falconattack. I agree with plodr, it has caused slow down issues. Numerous posts here at least.

Do you have Spybot's, TeaTimer enabled? Disable it from the instructions below.

I ran check disk, no errors. I looked at the msconfig and turned off the Start, it boots slightly quicker. I looked at the Services,,, closed that window. too many choices. Not sure of all these what is important and what is not. I am unistalling the avg. Thanks to you all for your help. dc
