Tell her to adopt 7. 7 is better with memory use than XP is, I hate going to work and using my XP desktop, after using Windows 7, which will be the last Microsoft OS that I will be using, since Microsoft has lost me with how they want Windows 8 to look like. The gui is better, everything is better with how Windows 7 was designed.

Not sure if you are aware, but Windows 8 will give the user an option from dual GUI's.

I agree, Metro sucks. A friend of mine is a tester for MS and the Metro theme makes his monitor look like a cellphone on steroids.

Not interested, since everything that I have seen of 8 shows that it is garbage. You are stuck with the chicolet/fugly desktop.

This is the truth with Windows 8/the last real Microsoft OS: "It seems to be clear that Metro UI will be the core interface that users will see when they start Windows 8. This could be a shock to some who were expecting the standard Windows desktop. It will be interesting to see how companies and organizations react to that new user experience."

Just tell her to get over her old ways. In reality, a person that is used to XP will have no problems with 7. What is exactly the reason that she does not like it? Is it because the fact is that it is a cleaner faster OS, or just that she hates change. They are both still Windows NT 6 OS's.

that maybe but the fact is she wants XP back...is that such a bad thing? why not let her be happy with xp

She can use XP with 7, just load http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx if she really wants it, or do a dual boot. http://lifehacker.com/5126781/how-to-dual-boot-windows-7-with-xp-or-vista That way, you both get what you want. After a while, she will adopt after she plays with 7 a few times, and never turn back to XP. The big plus with us, with 7, is the libraries, and home group. Makes it a lot easier when finding stuff across multiple user accounts. Also, media sharing is a whole lot easier with 7, especially if you have a dlna capable device like a Blu-ray player. 7 is just a better OS all around, and the minor changes they made after Vista, makes it a lot more user friendly.

    Greetings, Dhabliwala.

If plodr's earlier suggestion about PC Restore is not viable (or if brownizs' dual-boot suggestion is not a possibility), then yes: your original assumption about the format/reinstall would likely be your best bet.

You might be able to contact Dell, supply them with your Service Tag #, and (for a small fee) they might supply you with a re-installation disk.

In lieu of that, you may be stuck with trying to locate a retail XP disk - unfortunately, they're becoming increasingly tough to find.

I agree with the other opinions about Windows 7: I personally think it's the best Microsoft OS ever produced. However, I am also familiar with many users' resistances to change, especially when it comes to Windows XP - many of my customers refuse to budge from such a comfortable environment.

That will BE REALLY hard, unless you can get a copy of XP from either a local ma & pop computer shop, or call Dell to see if they still sell. If not, lesson learned, and she will have to get to love Windows 7.
