Random freezes and crashes

Hello,

Over the past couple months I have been experiencing random freezes and crashes on my laptop. Occasionally my system will freeze for 1-2 minutes then operate again, then other times it will freeze and require a restart.

These errors occur during high system usage such as gaming and also during low system usage such as web browsing. I am running Windows Vista and as far as I know I have enough ram and processing power (3gb/1.8 Core2 Duo).

After performing a complete malware scan and finding no sign of infection, I was recommended to post in this forum for assistance. I do NOT have a factory recover partition and also do not have access to my recovery dvd's so reinstalling the OS would be the least optimal solution.

I can submit Event Viewer logs if needed, thanks.

 

Everything except a recent defrag. I'll let that run tonight and post if I am still having issues.

 

Unfortunately I am still experiencing the same issues even after defragmentation of my hdd.

Any suggestions?

Uninstalled some old programs already, and cleaned up running processes. The crashes/freezes occur even after restarting my computer when there are only a few processes running.

The reason I don't think it's a resource issue is that the incidences occur during both low and high system resource usage. For example when I'm simply browsing the web with Chrome.

Is there a way to get an event log of when these incidences occur and submit it for inspection?

 

Chrome was just an example. The freezes/crashes have occurred during the following situations:

• After powering on my laptop and Windows begins to loads and before I start any programs
  
• During web browsing with Google Chrome, no other programs running
  
• Using Skype
  
• Playing games
  
• Other computer usage such as copying files and watching video clips
  

There does not seem to be any related factor in the situations in crashes, hence the reason I initially suspected malware.

Still experiencing similar issues every day now. I'm having me recovery disks sent to me in case I need to do a complete wipe and reinstall but this would be the last option.
