    HI,
I have an old win xp machine. It won't upgrade to SP3 and now I am having problems with Firefox7 adobe addons - these won't install it keeps giving a 'failed to initialise' error , FF7 has become unstable and slow. I installed Chrome at work(Win 7 32 bit pro) and this was a lot quicker so I tried to install chrome at home - it installed but won't run..

I don't haver any disks to do a reinstall of XP , and I don't really want to loose anything...

What can I do? Do I need to get a new PC? ... I am getting near the end of my tether...

    Help!!

İf you have a serial number of the XP operating system (could be a serial number sticker somewhere around the case ) you can download the genuine XP from internet and reinstall the operating system by using the serial key that you have. This is the option 1. The option 2 is using a 3rd party software to fix operating system errors. Such as you can use ccleaner or Glary utilities software to fix registry issues. However I strongly recommend to do your backups because it seems like the operating system is going to crash soon.

it's been getting flakier for a few weeks, but reinstalling FF has mostly sorted it... I think there is a key on the bottom of the box... I will source another disk to do a full backup on to.
Where do I go to down load XP?

You don't. MS has never made any version of Windows available for download, even the old, old versions that are no longer supported.
If you see XP can be downloaded, steer clear of the site because chances are great, you will get malware.
Borrow a friend's XP CD (make sure you know your serial number BEFORE you try to do anything). If you are running XP Home, borrow that. If you are running XP Pro, borrow that.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

I was always under the impression that you could download various Microsoft files (including operating systems) from MSDN as long as you were a subscriber - is this not the case?

(This is purely for my info - I apologize for the hijack).

Could be but I only know one person who paid the big bucks to buy an MSDN subscription. I'm assuming that most who post here for help do not have a subscription.

Don't worry about the hijack, if I can download it from somewhere that is great, got the feelers out for a copy of XP...

I think we are done here. To get Microsoft XP or anything else, you buy it. You might consider a trusted seller at Ebay or Amazon.com for a cheap copy. Everything else is true; MSDN subscriptions are expensive but given free to Microsoft MVP's. As XP heads out to pasture we might be more laxed on how you can get it but not right now.

I appreciate that, would it be more sensible to put win 7 on it rather than trying to fix my current install?

If you are keeping it for a few years otherwise cheaper to get XP

You can and they have Windows 3.11 (all 5mb of it) still for download on MSDN, but in the main they are not transferable applications as in they are only for the subscriber, however if the OS is a retail build and the user has a licence then the MSDN versions should be fine.

Thing with MSDN is that for just getting one OS the subscriber fee is high, cheapest OS only subscription is $699 the all app ones are in the region of $11k per year.

As to your issue I would see if a friend has a XP CD so you can do a repair install as Plodr mentions.
