I have been noticing that more and more websites are being blocked by the government.
We get a re-direct to a page telling us that the government conciders this site illegal.
This is what we get if you try to access a site they do not like, it is appearing more and more.
It is in four languages,Dutch,French,German and English.

I have never come across anything like that, Bill. As far as I know, the US gov hasn't tried to regulate yet, or if they have it hasn't gotten passed through.

Seems a bit big brother to me.

    DO NOT WANT!!!

I would rage to see something like that happen. Fortunately, I have not seen it happen here yet. (Canada).

We do however, have some potential upcoming legislation where our ISPs may have to report usage information to authorities without warrant, that is drawing the attention of some privacy activists. However, this still has to pass through the House Of Commons, and the Senate before it becomes law.

There are also some issues with Net Neutrality, where certain types of traffic are throttled, and lots of dispute over fair billing practices, but these aren't getting as much attention. What's more our regulatory board, the Canadian Radio and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) seems to favour a "hands off" approach, so I don't expect much action there.

It is beginning to feel a bit like Russia or China here.
I have been trying some other sites and it seems that they are blocking mainly Pirate download sites but Wiki Leaks is also blocked.
I wonder if they are reading this as i type???????????????

Jeez, never came across that yet though the jerks at Scripps sometimes block videos mostly from the US. Big Brother is alive and well in Belgium.:(

It could be bona-fide or it could be a redirect page type of malware/virus or configuration setting similar to the Google redirect page that requests that you acknowledge the redirect - seen that latter problem before.

I notice that if it is Belgian then it should be offering Walloon language as a warning as well as other languages in the European Union (EU).

However, I doubt that this page would be sustainable if you use proxy servers or VPN tunnel to an alternative network - both could make you anonymous and/or set your IP address to that not used in your native country. Nevertheless, it could be your ISP attempting to abide by your country's legal system and to avoid any responsibility of its customers using the ISP’s network for things that the ISP could be liable for. But, just by visiting a web page does not mean either the ISP or yourself are commiting an offence, what if you mis-typed or mis-clicked...

Finally, the page that you are trying to visit may rewrite, rehost or rename their address for their page to avoid censorship and the keywords that are being filtered or simply be cached by Google upon searching.

Censorship :*** is a can of worms...

Maybe that's why the malware forum is so slow, you Belgians can't get to your porn sites anymore. :-D:-D

Have people improved so much that social engineering is no longer working :-D

The "error" message report by "FAX", presumably they don't want spam e-mails...

@ Maxwell it is not malware because i asked a couple of neighbors to try some sites and they are all getting the same.
    The Walloon language is French.
The four languages that the post is written in are the official languages of Belgium, we are a multilingual country.

Not now but soon YES. They call it "SAFE INTERNET FOR EVERYONE" but it is so silly that they do it for me without asking my opinion as a tax paying citizen they don't ask if I want this service or not. It should be optional but "nope" it is way easier to force everyone to use the internet in the way of they want.

The walloons live in the south of Belgium called Wallonia they are mainly French speaking

The thick black line just under Brussels is the division between Flanders in the north and Wallonia in the south,Up by the coast you can see Brugge and that is where i live and we speak Dutch as a native language but most people here also speak French and English.

Wow not had that yet in the UK Bill, but I can imagine that its coming as in Gov they are debating a so called firewall of blocking illegal (or deemed illegal) sites, I can imagine that it maybe in part ISP dependent.

I'd have hoped we would not go this route, as I cannot see a Gov employee knowing what's good or bad!! (yes I'm a Gov worker so can mock them all I want) so this leaves too much moderation of the internet a kind of Orwellian 1984!

yes I found this out on the infallible (lol) Wikipedia. Being a resident of Texas, it is an EXTREMELY RARE occurrence that we hear any mention of Belgium on a day to day basis, expect perhaps when ordering waffles at Denny's (lol) . Have said that, Walloon (to us, anyway,) is something that doesn't show itself in day-to-day conversations here. But I am glad to know this term now. The most I know of Belgium comes from the movie (which I liked VERY much) "In Bruges" . Is Bruges and Brugge the city city ? I honesty thought that was an excellent movie, and watched it all the way through, while I cannot bring myself to watch movies of lesser quality all the way though .
have a good one, (insert friendly slang for a Belgium native here)

Excellent movie, IMO . If you haven't seen it, check it out !

    Hi Bill

Having read your links just now, while I agree with "stop kinderporno" and what the blocks are aimed at doing I feel still that regulation albeit good minded is going to in the future get way way out of hand and we will see legitimate sites blocked.

Its a hard task to implement and good on the Belgian Gov for trying this out but I do fear that it will gain much criticism and those that wish to circumvent the blocks will do with the likes of VPN Tunnels etc unless the ISPs gen on-board and directly monitor traffic but that's a whole different conversation on whether that is legit or needed.

    Hi David and welcome back.
From the info i can glean from the Belgian web sites there are some 25 sites currently blocked ranging from Pirate bay to child pornography and as i do not use these sites it is no loss to me, the only reason i found this action by the government is that i tried to log on to WikiLeaks.
I suppose the rest of the internet world will be watching Belgium now (it will make us famous for more than chocolates and beer) to see how effective this is but i think the "freedom of information groups" will be having a field day with this.

    @ FED UP
Bruges is the flemish name for Brugge and belive me when they were making the film it caused havoc in the city center because they blocked off huge chunks of the center and of course every Bruggeling watched it at least twice.:-D

It would seem that internet blocking is beginning to take hold.
If it is successful no doubt it will be expanded to block any sites that a particular government does not like.
