Screen Capture Problems

I am trying to do a series of screen captures in Office programs (this time, specifically Outlook). I know to do the Alt-PrtSc and then Ctrl-V into Paint. For most of what I am doing that works fine.

However, when I try to capture a screen shot with a Menu present hitting the Alt key closes the menu. I have tried with the cursor both on and off the menu, but every time I wind up with a closed menu.

Does anyone know how to capture the screen shot and get the menu (and sub menus, if any) showing in the captured pic?

If Windows won't do it is there a good (relatively cheap) program available that will.

Thanks to all for the help!

PicPick should do what you want quite easily.

I always use PrtScrn in this situation. Then paste into Paint. It's the Alt that's the problem.

I have been using Gadwin PrintScreen which was recommended by an MG member.

NOTE: not my opinion; just passing on the info.

None of the recommended programs can properly capture the screen when there is a menu open, which is the OP's problem. However, using Prtscrn rather than Alt+PrtScrn does capture the screen without causing the open menu to close. Pasting into Paint and then using any of the recommended screen capture programs to capture the required window will work.

Thanks mjnc. I wasn't aware of the tool bar and crapware, I should have known. The version I use(v2.3.1) doesn't have it. Apologies for suggesting it.

Earthling, you're right. It's the Alt key combo that is the problem. Not a factor with PicPick v2.3.1 or with tgell's suggestion for FastStone as both programs use a Ctrl key combo. See thumbnail examples. Tgell's suggestion has the added advantage of no unwanted junk.

Using PrtScrn, copy/paste, crop/save method will work quite well. And no downloading or installing involved at all.

    Thumbnail(1) PicPick v2.3.1, thumbnail(2) Faststone Capture 5.3.

Gadwin Printscreen DOES work with a menu open.
    See thumbnail.
Just beware, the default is to save in *.bmp format. :cry
Alter this to save as *.jpg for a much smaller size image.:cool

    No apology necessary.
I was only quoting from the linked web site.

The latest version is 3.0.8 - MG download

The oldest version I could find is 3.0.4 at oldversion.com

Somewhat misleading information, though, since PicPick is also a Top Pick at the same site. rolleyes

Gadwin Printscreen allows you to change the Hot key through the Preferences dialog.
    The default is PrtScn.

In the Settings of FastStone Capture (mentioned and linked above) there is the option to "Delay before capture" which you can set at any number of seconds.
When you click the type of capture you want you can then open any menus, then wait.
I have it permanently set to 5 seconds (probably too much but I''m usually patient) I only change it if I need instant capture at some time.

By the way, I got a free version of Snap that was offered here a while back and installed it. It really is a very nice program and can make some 'pretty' captures but I eventually uninstalled it because I don't need anything that fancy.
FastStone Capture does everything I need plus it is small and portable :cool

Sorry 'bout the misinfo. I've tried so many screen capture progs and none have been able to capture menus that I just assumed these would be the same. :-o

Completely off topic, my MG thread reply notifications no longer have hyperlinks to the thread - just the url as text. Is this MG or me? Win 7 SP1, Thunderbird 7.

I got sent a link, clicked it and here I am.
I have never used Thunderbird, does it automatically load a plain text version if connection is slow?

This has only started yesterday evening. OK previously. My connection is very fast, so not that.

It's Thunderbird. Just checked in Gmail, that's OK. Don't want to hijack - no more responses on this pls.

To all who posted, THANK YOU! I appreciate the help. I will keep these in reserve. I stumbled across Ashampoo Snap ver 5. It is shareware, but you get an unrestricted trial. It has a timer on the capture so you can get everything you want (including the cursor) when it captures. For the $20 it looks like an excellent program. I have 39 days left on the free trial, and if it works in everything I want to do I will buy it.

Again, thanks for all the help. This is the one place I am sure of getting both good quality and timely help.:)

I'm using the 5.3 free Faststone Capture. It's been fine until _ apparently _ the advent of Win 10. is it partially in compatible with Win10? Now, when I try to demark a screen area by using the caterwampus opposing corners, the area is enlarged by 25 percent, which necessarily means that part of it is cut off. In short, it's impossible now to capture exactly the area I want using Faststone 5.3 and Win10. Anyone have a fix?

The last post in this thread was nearly five years ago - better to have started a new one. But to answer your question, Win 10 (and 7 and 8/8.1) all have Snipping Tool
