    Hey Guys,
I would like to get into folding. I've read the sticky threads, but I have a few questions.
    1) I can fold on this right? I am pretty sure that I posted a thread about this in the past but I can not find it. Specs:
    http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...M_EN/specs.htm
    2) Do I have to do anything to my system? Like OC anything?
    3) I do not want to "burn up" my system doing this. It's my main computer till I get my laptop here in a few months. So am I safe to do this? I don't have much $$ to put towards new parts if it does burn anything up.
    4) Do I have to do anything with it after it's running? I've seen graphs posted and your all like those are great numbers and what not I don't get any of that, though I'd like to understand it.
Sorry if it's a bit confusing , just alot of questions.
    Thanks,
    Spock96

Any PC can fold but the higher the spec the more points you can accru in a given period of time.
OCing is not needed (Augie is the specialist for that) all that does is run the CPU at a higher speed than it was set as standard but this does generate heat so good cooling is required.
P.S. can not see your specs as the link does not work.

This page will give you all the links you need to answer any questions you have.

    1) Yes, but on a dual core don't expect big numbers.

    2) You can leave your machine as is as OC'ing will not give you much gain.

    3) Install a temperature monitoring program like CPUID HWMonitor to check your CPU temps when starting up and running the f@h client. Keep it under 80C, preferably close to 70C.

    4) For a beginner like you, install the open beta v7 client, easiest to setup. Make sure you enter the MG # 12072 when setting it up. You will then have to wait until your first unit is done and uploaded. You can then go here to check your progress.

I don't have any money to put towards a bigger CPU. so I'm gonna have to run with that.
    Temp monitor--Will this work?
    http://addgadget.com/all_cpu_meter/
Ok so I install that and I use that exact number? I don't have to upload it myself it does it all automatically. Correct?

When you're installing the client you will be asked some questions, yes on 12072 if you want to fold for MajorGeeks. I'm not familiar with that gadget but if it shows CPU temps then it's fine.

Ok, Thank you augie. I'll download it. :)

Once you have it running, pull up taskman to verify that both cores are @ %100. It the CPU runs too hot then reduce the core loading %

It's up in my system tray. My temps are 30-40 range(highest is like 37) with 100% usage. How do I fix that?
It doesn't seem to be doing anything, Is it supposed to do that??

    Online:Inactive, is what it says.
How do I drop my CPU Usage from 100%??

It looks good.:) Check out your estimated points after a few hours and see when your first Work Unit(WU) is supposed to finish.

f@h wiki glossary I thought it'd be easier to give you a link than explain what I mean every time. ;)

I check that on that site you linked me to right?
Should I be concerned about using 100% of my CPU?
What am I looking for on that site?
    Sorry for all the questions.

The site just has a list of acronyms that we commonly use, that's all.

All my machines have been at %100 CPU as long as there's no issue with heat and you're perfectly fine there. BTW, that %100 that you mention is it on both cores I assume?

    Spock96 Major Geek 'Spocky'

Sorry I meant the first site you linked me too.
Yes your assumption was right both cores. So good on that?

    Yes, you're going fine.

So I wait till this WU is finished then it uploads it itself? Then if I go to that site and search my screen name it'll show stuff?

Basically yes but they only update every three hours compared to Stanford's every hour.

I bring up the client and click on my Name--Spock96. It takes me to a page that says Spock96's contribution to FAH but the page is completely blank only the header shows up???

Wait.;) What's the ETA? These could take as long as a day or more, what's the WU that you're folding, first four digits needed only.

  21. Spock96

    Spock96 Major Geek 'Spocky'

    ETA--1.06 Days.
PRCG--7611. Is that what you mean?

Most is self explanatory, first thing to know is that your average PPD is based on a 7-day cycle so by the end of this week your chart should level out and show around 700 PPD.

The 'TeamRank' shows you where you currently stand on MG's based on your points. The green people you see ahead of you are those that you will soon beat with your next WU as you get some 600 points per WU. The ProjectRank is where you currently stand amongst all folders around the world, both active and non-active and you should fly by these people really quickly as they don't fold anymore. Last thing to know is that the week starts on Sundays. That should do it.:)

BTW, never keep the screensaver on, if you want to watch it for a bit then that's fine as it sucks a lot of CPU cycles to run. Get's boring real fast.:-D

    Thank you that helps.
I never run my screen saver if I'm not using my computer I turn the monitor off.
